Congress MPs, MLAs to donate month's salary to flood-hit Kerala

New Delhi, Aug 18 (IANS): The Congress on Saturday demanded that floods in Kerala should be declared a "national calamity."

All elected representatives of the party would donate one month's salary towards relief efforts in the state, it said.

The decision to donate salaries was taken at a meeting of Congress general secretaries, party in-charges of states, legislative party leaders and state unit chiefs, which was presided over by party chief Rahul Gandhi.

Gandhi had earlier in the day urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately declare the floods in Kerala as "a national disaster."

Briefing reporters after meeting of Congress office-bearers, party communications in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said the Modi government should come forward to help Kerala where over 180 people have died and property worth over Rs 3,000 crore has been damaged due to floods.

"It was decided that all Congress MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Congress MLAs across India and party MLCs will donate one month's salary, which will be sent through the AICC for relief measures in Kerala," Surjewala said.

He said it was also decided that all Congress governments will come forward to help the people of the state.

Surjewala said Punjab government has already donated Rs 10 crore to the Kerala Relief Fund and JD-S and Congress- government in Karnataka has also donated Rs 10 crore to the relief measures. The government in Puducherry has also donated Rs 1 crore.

He said special relief committees will be formed in adjoining states including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu apart from Puducherry. Material collected by Congress workers will be sent to the people of Kerala.

Surjewala said the party also noted with concern the grave situation due to floods in Karnataka and some other parts of the country.
"Modiji should stop discriminating in matters of flood relief. The Prime Minister must rise above party-politics and come forward to help Kerala, Karnataka and other flood-affected states. The Prime Minister should declare Kerala floods as a national calamity," Surjewala said.

Overflowing rivers and a series of landslides in Kerala have resulted in the death of 180 people as of Saturday morning, with over 3 lakh others forced to move to some hundreds of relief camps.

People are commenting on support of PAPPU when he said he and his party are donating thier one month salary... when modi announced 500 crores... people started commenting stating we are tired of his assurance.. which means its only his assurance he will not give 500 crores to kerala... whats the gaurentee pappu and his family will donate thier salary.... forget about salary.. why coudnt they donate from thier personal treassury as each politician will have min 500 crores in thier account.... why cant this be a political gimmic now as elections are nearing.. If Modi does something good .. then he does for the sake of winning elections.. when PAPPU donates his salary then he is doing something great.. PAPPU is proven joker and others who comment on behalf of him are big jokers... See the way he was smiling during Ataljis funeral....

PM Modi is a sleepy watchman, He loves visiting countries on tax payers money and bakths can only praise him. Zero contribution to the the country. All policies adopted by him were the projects and schemes of the earlier govt., PM introduced and implemented them by changing the name of the schemes. He could not make those schemes successful because of his illiterate ministers including himself.
He can make the country filled with chai and pakoda dhabas.

Even as Kerala stares at its worst-ever calamity, the Centre’s response has been far from adequate, those who know the extent of the damage say.

Of the total Rs 760 crore, however, Kerala has received only Rs 80 crore as of now. This, despite the state government already submitting a memorandum to the central government seeking Rs 1,220 crore as primary allocation.
Last year, the state government had sought around Rs 7,000 crore from the Centre for relief work after cyclone Ockhi hit the Kerala coast. The Centre agreed to allocate only Rs 820 crore. And now, when the state is facing its worst-ever crisis, the Centre is overlooking the scale of the disaster.

Narendra Modi government priorities are clear
    Advertisement 4,300 Crores.
    Kumbh Mela 4,200 Crores.
    Shivaji Statue 3,600 Crores.
    Patel Statue 2,989 Crores.
    PM travel 1,484 Crores.
    Kerala Flood Relief 100 Crores.
According to the Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s initial assessment, the state has suffered a loss of Rs 19,512 crore. More than three lakh people have already been displaced. Hundreds of villages and towns have entirely submerged under water, and all 14 districts are on red alert. Access to electricity, healthcare and mobile phone networks continue to be patchy. More importantly, thousands are reported to have been stuck in their respective homes and relief camps, which too face the danger of flooding if the downpour continues.
Does Modi Govt comprehend that Kerala Flood has left 357 have died, 4 lakh are in shelter homes, 30,000 houses destroyed & 16,000 Kms of roads damaged. Why is Modiji not declaring Kerala Flood a ‘National Calamity’? Stop punishing flood ravaged Kerala.
Floods, human tragedy & unprecedented devastation can’t be subject matter of partisan politics as is being done by Modi Govt in Kerala Flood. Federalism envisages landholding & co-operation in such times. Does an autocratic Central Govt understand this foundation principle?
