Cong leader says Goans abroad do 'toilet cleaning' jobs; party seeks explanation

Panaji, Aug 7 (PTI): Hours after senior Congress leader Pratapsingh Rane termed the Goan diaspora as 'toilet cleaners', Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar on Monday demanded an explanation over his statement.

While speaking in the Legislative Assembly last week, Rane had said that Goans who work abroad do toilet cleaning jobs.

Upset over Rane's statement, Chodankar took to social media and said, "The Congress Party distanced itself from Pratapsing Rane's reference to Goans working in the United Kingdom. To speak disrespectfully about any profession or person is fundamentally against the philosophy and the idea of Congress and therefore the statement was unnecessary and incorrect."

The party further directed Rane to withdraw his statement or justify his remarks.

"The Congress Party leaves it to Rane's wisdom either to withdraw his statement or explain it to the satisfaction of the Goan Diaspora. He is wise and experienced enough to react appropriately to his intentions," the post on Facebook added.

Highlighting Goans and their establishment, Chodankar said that they have enriched India as well through valuable foreign exchange remittances.

"Goa has a long history of migration. Goans have enriched every country to which they migrated. Many of them have and continue to hold high posts in Civil, Corporate, Government including Military and Education and Research establishments in many Countries. Some have adorned echelons of Democratic, Social, Medical and Banking and Scientific establishments," the post further read.

"Some have become Senators and Legislators. They have enriched the Countries they work in. They have enriched our Country as well through valuable foreign exchange remittances. Today's Goa is a gift of present and past Goans who have and continue to slog here and abroad. We do not belittle their sacrifices nor their sweat and blood," the post further read.

GPCC also appealed to Goans to work unitedly and fight the devil of unemployment let loose by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government.

I find this very very defaming a person who works honestly and earn his own living. There is nothing to work as toilet cleaner or a lower class worker who has no higher qualification.Sometimes one has to work any possible work in certain situation. Then they can do other work.I find much better than lei about your work ,theft ,or lazy sitting.Even here ,people do any work when the need is.No need to shame. One has to ashame is the person defame others, speaks bad about others.Secretary has to make coffee when Boss wants it.

What a stupid and demeaning observation! Obviously this guy has met only toilet cleaners on his trips, perhaps no one from other walks of life wanted to meet him.

I wonder what provoked this Rane being a Goan himself, to make such inaccurate, ridiculous, provocative statement.

Can you explain what you meant by 'toilet cleaning". Don't have discipline in speaking in the public? Its an urgent call to you, explain to the people what you meant by saying this? People in India too work and they are from all over the country. Not just from one state.

People work hard in different sections as per the qualifications and experience. People who are qualified in keeping the household clean, they will do so. But it does not mean, its bad. In fact it is the humblest and praise worthy work they do and may the Lord bless them

So you are asked to explain to the people of this country why did you say so .

You people are too soft on Senior Congress Leader's remark, he should be shunted out of Politics permanently. Not just seeking explanation. Do not be biased. If the statement would have come from a BJP Politician, what you would have done ????? Give same treatment to a person who demeans Goan's.

If we use the same yardstick then 90 percent of BJP leaders including Modi, Yogi, Sadhvi, Nalin, Shoba Giriraj etc. etc. etc. will have to be shunted out of politics.

@ Mr. Bharat1953, Unfortunately this is the general impression in the country today - Congressmen are saints and BJPians are devils. This has to be cleared first.

Since it has come from a Congi leader it has to be pardoned. The Ktaka state congress should seek the approval and help of Deve Gowda to condemn this incident.

Most Goans work on board ships and as OS (Ordinary Seaman) , in the initial stages, they may have to clean toilets, kitchens, Decks, do laundry, etc. But they work hard, rise through the ranks and go on to become very rich after working for a few years.

Dear Sir, as you have brought the topic of Sea men. Kindly note every Sea man whether Engineer or butler has to do, deck cleaning including toilet cleaning during induction period. Even the Military training follows that ritual. Hence let us not demean the work.
