Beltangady: Driven by zeal to help fellow villagers, youth builds hanging bridge

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Jul 18: A village in this taluk always turned into a virtual island during monsoon months. The only mud road here that is used by people to have contact with outside worlds gets inundated during rainy season. The demand of the residents of this village seeking a bridge have not been met by successive people's representatives. But a youth throbbed to the need of the villagers here, and made up his mind to see that the people here get an easy access to other villages and towns. For the sake of the people of this village, he conceived on his own plan and has built a hanging bridge for them.

The village under reference happens to be a hamlet called Polipu. Polipu, located in the midst of thick forests, falls under Shishila gram panchayat limits. People here are heavily dependent on Shishila downtown for their day-to-day needs. For reaching there, they need to cross Polipu rivulet, which does not pose any problem during summer as water level in the rivulet recedes then. But with the onset of monsoon, their ordeal begins. Because the area gets very heavy rains, the people are unable to cross the rivulet which flows with full force during the rains, and hence find it very hard to meet their daily needs like food, work, education, medicines etc met.

The people of Polipu have handed over a large number of memorandums so far to people's representatives, seeking a proper bridge for them, but none of them have been heeded so far. Now, a youth has throbbed to their difficulties. The man, identified as Balakrishna from Shishila, has solved their monsoon blues. Balakrishna, who was determined to provide a lasting solution to the problems faced by the people of Polipu, thought of building a hanging bridge. With the support of friends, he came forward to implement his plan, and has now succeeded in realizing his dream.

Balakrishna has taken care to take into account convenience, suitability and safety aspects when building a hanging bridge here. People of Polipu will be thankful to him for his generous gesture. In the past, the people used to somehow build temporary foot-bridge across this rivulet during monsoons by using trunks of areca nut trees. However, when the intensity of rain increased, the water level in the rivulet used to rise, and the foot-bridge often got washed away. Now, the hanging bridge built by Balakrishna has saved the people of lot of problems. In the past, elders in the family had to accompany their children to schools because of safety concerns, but now the children can go to schools on their own as families are sure that they would reach their destinations safely.

The way Balakrishna has served the village has put even people's representatives from here to shame. His selfless attitude and his voluntary response to the needs of villagers are worth recognizing by the society.

On the one hand we should appreciate his hard work (social work) and in the mean time we have to worry about small children passing through this unscientific hanging bridge. Chances are there losing balance since the hanging bridge moves side way too. Village authorities will be the first ones to go against in case of any mishap taken place.
    God forbid.
Village panchayat and responsible people pay immediate attention to such grave danger and do something better without any delay.

Good work. God bless you .
However , care needs to be taken while crossing on this bridge , especially small children needs to be accompanied by a elder holding their hands.
Also since the bridge made using nylon ropes, these things gradually lose their strength when they are exposed to sun light for couple of years and there is risk of it getting snapped . So gram panchayat and local MP should wake up and build a permanent bridge for the villagers.

I appreciate the concern citizens apathy towards his village. Though it is the simple bridge which resembles military style 'Monkey Bridge' or 'outback bridge' has a lot of drawbacks and technical errors. This gentleman should have taken the local scouts help who have extensive knowledge of this construction.
The foot logs are just placed without any 'eight lashing' and 'rope weave' is invited to the slip to the death. The logs gap are too much which may not withstand the weight of two crossing persons.
I would request the gentleman or Panchayat official put fishnets on both sides before someone slips.

It is unfortunate that one of the most educated districts is lacking basic infrastructures. Its only days before gave the press conference of releasing Rs14,000 crores for developmental work. Newly elected BJP MLA is seen in Shiradhi ghat with the umbrella.
    1. If so much money is spent why it is not reaching the citizens of India?
    2. Why can't Panchayat take the help of scouts or Military disaster unit for such construction which can be done in a few hours?

Third photograph really scary. if my land is not developed, it is not because of lack of natural and human, money resources BUT lack of will by the bureaucrats, govt, staff, elected members to serve the land and its people.

In this hanging bridge, at a time, one or two children can pass by as it cannot take more weight and might be dangerous, if more people move on this wooden bamboo bridge at one time. At the middle, of this wooden bamboo bridge ,there is no support from the ground level. It is not possible to do so to this temporary wooden bamboo bridge. Hope the concerned authorities will take action immediately.

Peoples representatives need only vote and village panchayath members need salary and nothing else. If a Individual can do this bridge with his own money, then peoples representatives can build 10 such bridges...not with their own money but with the public money. Even now if peoples representatives can improve upon the safety of this bridge but they will never do. They only concentrate on big projects whereby they can pocket some money.......!!!!!!

While i really commend the efforts and commitment to society from bala, i strongly feel the durability and the load bearing capacity of this bridge should be evaluated before its opened to the general public especially during the monsoon to avoid any further accidents..

Thats being said, we need to put our elected bodies to shame.. This is something that they should have been doing..
