Mangaluru reports most cases of elder abuse, Delhi fifth: Survey

New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI): Delhi is among the top five Indian cities reporting high percentages of elderly abuse with 33 percent of the elderly population being treated poorly, a new survey has noted.

According to the 23 city report by HelpAge India released Thursday, the maximum amount of abuse happens in Mangaluru (47 per cent), followed by Ahmedabad (46 per cent), Bhopal (39 per cent) and Amritsar (35 per cent).

The study that aimed at understanding the extent, depth, form, frequency and reasons behind such abuse, revealed that nearly one-fourth of the elderly population experienced abuse personally, and often the main abusers were either sons (52 per cent) or daughters-in-law (34 per cent).

“Unfortunately, elder abuse starts at home and from whom they trust the most.

“This year the son has turned out to be the foremost perpetrator, followed by the daughter-in-law who normally is perceived as the primary abuser as per past surveys,” Mathew Cherian, CEO, HelpAge India, said.

Another finding of the report underlined how 82 per cent of the abused elderly do not report the matter to either “maintain confidentiality of family matter” (52 per cent) or “do not know how to deal with problem” (34 per cent).

The latter suggests their lack of awareness, the report noted.

According to the elders participating in the survey, sensitisation of children and strengthening inter-generational bonding is the way forward.

“38 per cent elders feel the most effective way to deal with elder abuse is to sensitize children. Another way of tackling this increasing generation gap between the young and the old, is bridging this technology gap and empowering our elders,” Rohit Prasad, Chief Operating Officer, HelpAge India, said.

Joining hands in the fight against elder abuse, the organisation, along with 300 senior citizens from across the national capital, will hold a candlelight march on Friday at Parliament Street in Delhi.

The charitable organisation also runs a toll-free helpline for elders to be able to reach out for help in case of instances of abuse.

Mangaloreans spend millions of rupees for celebrating weddings, often taking out loans, but when it comes to taking good care of parents, they lack behind. I know quite a few parents end up in Old Age Homes, if they can shell out enough money to stay there. Then again, it is like 'Frying Pan to Boiling Water" kind of situation for aged people.

Aged people should be encouraged to live by themselves from the assistance from paid domestic help. It is called assisted living, where one can make independent decision. Social Service agencies and government can help them to make the ends meet and let them live with pride and dignity.

National level senior citizen forum can be a strong vote bank and an influential lobby like AARP in the United States, if it is organized and supported well. Strict legislation can be passed through lobbying in support of aged people.

it is the duty of the central govt to look after its citizens specially senior citizens .our govt feels it is only business. take only taxes from its citizens. though children responsible but govt must be more responsible to look after the elders .in india only senior citizens who receive regular pension are lucky once to some extent. Though children are responsible to certain extent when govt ignores its responsibility what senior citizens can do

With Mangaluru topping the list, the volunteers pointed out two factors: One, effective reporting system that allows elders to communicate their thoughts without fearing consequences. Two, a majority of them feel neglected as their children are working or are settled abroad.

The abuses are reported in Mangalore and rarely (may not even be) reported in the other parts of India! Most probably! There's no other way of this happening in kudla.

    Sad news.
Too much competition, commercialization and diminishing importance given to humanity must be the causes.
But Mangalore may not be top in the list, case reporting may be more than others.

IN THIS PRESENT ERA MOST UNHAPPY PEOPLE ARE AGED PARENTS. FROM CHILDHOOD TILL MARRIAGE PARENTS GIVE THEIR CHILDREN THE BEST (BEST EDU,BEST FOOD, BEST CLOTHING AND WHAT NOT?).. BUT AFTER MARRIAGE NOT ALL, BUT SOME!!! GIRLS ENTER THEIR IN-LAWS HOUSE AS FOX IN GOATS CLOTHING. BEGINNING EVERYTHING GOES WELL, BUT SLOWLY DEVIL ENTERS IN BETWEEN AND FOOLISH SON ALSO FORGETS ALL GOOD THINGS WHICH HIS PARENTS DID FOR HIM , SLOWLY LISTENS TO HIS GOAT WHO IS NOW CHANGED HER CLOTHING INTO FOXS, THEN DO ALL AGAINST FOR PARENTS. ULTIMATELY PARENTS LAND UP IN AGED HOMES OR DIE DUE TO MENTAL STRESS. FINALLY WE VIOLATE GODS COMMAND HONOUR YOUR PARENTS...
