Moodbidri: ‘Withdraw transfer order of Fr Sunil Veigas’ - Alangar parishioners urge Bishop

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Moodbidri, May 27: Demanding the withdrawal of transfer of parish priest Fr Sunil Vegas, the parishioners of Our Lady of Rosary Church Alangar held protest in front of the church on Sunday May 27, after the Mass.

As per the parishioners, Bishop had appointed Fr Sunil Vegas as a parish priest only eight months back. In the appointment letter it was mentioned that it is a full term appointment for the duration of 7 years. But two weeks back after the Sunday Mass, Fr Sunil Vegas himself announced that he had received the transfer order. Shocked parishioners made queries on this unexpected transfer and found some big hands behind this.

As per the parishioners, Fr Sunil Vegas, as soon as he took over as parish priest, succeeded in stopping the financial irregularities in the institutions run by the parish council. With the help of audits, he caught some members red-handed, who were involved in administration of school and other institutions. Known as disciplined and impartial priest, he put measures to stop the irregularities in other church associations where these lay leaders were involved.

Angered by this, some people came together and used their connections to transfer the priest. As per diocesan transfer order published in diocese website and not made public to the mainstream media, Fr Sunil Veigas would go to Fajir parish while Fr Walter D’Souza from Shakthinagar Church would come to Alangar Church.

The protesting parishioners also alleged that after the transfer order was received, the representatives from the parish visited the Bishop’s House twice and requested to withdraw the transfer order. But Bishop’s House did not respond properly and failed to give proper reasons behind the transfer.

The protesters also warned that if the Bishop’s House does not withdraw the transfer of Fr Sunil Veigas, they will consider it as injustice on parishioners and will move to higher authorities as per church law.

Alangar is a nice parish. We have been to that Parish few years ago for a Sunday liturgical services, just to listen to the wonderful choir that the Parish possesses. The people of Alangar are warm hearted and kind. Our attachment to any Parish Priest is always a good sign of people taking active role in the Parish activities.

If we have our faith in God, then we should abide by the wishes of the Diocese, howsoever difficult the situation could be. Each parish has their own delicate situations that need be tackled delicately with faith in God. People coming out openly and sharing their grievances is always nice. Let the decisions continue to prevail, and let the time be the best healer with changes in personnel due to many circumstances that are beyond our control.

The world is advanced. Even the ordinary unprivileged people can go to seek justice through media and other means. They can definitely approach the higher authorities. Hope and pray that Bishop takes impartial measures to solve this problem.

Dear Alangar Parishioners need not worry, Fr. Sunil was really good. but if our Bishop thinks that he needed in Fajir for the Mission then he will transfer him. There is nothing she should stay for 7 years. The Priest has the right to request for transfer and Bishop too can transfer him. Priest will obey the Shepherd. Going to Media and making public stunt is not a solution. let they take their decision. If you think there is a irregularity then being the Parishioners you all take decision and take them out of the council or school. Fr. Walter too is a good priest with admin skills

Alangar Parishioners need not worry, Fr. Walter D' Souza may audit every Parish Council member, and the school authorities more vigorously, than Fr. Sunil Veigas, who has already set a higher standard of discipline.

In any service that is rendered to a community, public support is very important. I am sure His Lordship the Bishop of Mangalore will access the dispute wisely and ensure justice.
