Democracy, secularism under threat, let’s pray for India: Delhi Archbishop

New Delhi, May 22 (DC): The Archbishop of Delhi, Anil Couto, in a letter addressed to all churches of the national capital, has asked them to start a campaign of fasting and prayers ahead of the 2019 general elections, citing the "turbulent political atmosphere" threatening democracy and secularism in country thereby kicking starting a political controversy.

"We are witnessing a turbulent political atmosphere which poses a threat to the democratic principles enshrined in our constitution and the secular fabric of our nation," the Archbishop’s letter said.

According to a report in NDTV, the letter further said, "It is our hallowed practice to pray for our country and its political leaders all the time but all the more so when we approach the general elections. As we look forward towards 2019 when we will have new government let us begin a prayer campaign for our country from May 13..."

"I request that we observe a day of fast every Friday of the week by forgoing at least one meal and offering our penance and all our sacrifices for our spiritual renewal and that of our nation. Moreover, I earnestly request that we organize an hour of Eucharistic adoration every Friday at a convenient time in all our parishes, religious houses and institution specifically praying for our nation. During this Adoration the enclosed Prayer may be recited," the letter added.

Reacting to the letter, Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, said: “PM is working towards inclusive growth without discriminating while breaking barriers of religion and castes. We can only ask them to think with progressive mindset.”

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue Rakesh Sinha termed the move as a "direct attack on Indian secularism and democracy".

"This is a direct attack by the Church on Indian secularism and democracy, and this is a direct intervention by the Vatican as these Bishops are appointed by the Pope. Their accountability is not to India but to Pope," Sinha said.

"Another big reason for this is after the formation of the Prime Minister Modi's government, church-oriented NGOs, received less money due to stricter laws. The Church organisations used to take this money for a variety of cause but in reality, utilise this only for religious conversions. They want a government to be made so that their conversion business flourishes," Sinha added.

Sinha also took to Twitter to vent his thoughts on the matter.

BJP’s spokesperson Shaina NC told news agency ANI, "It is wrong to try and instigate castes and communities. You can tell them to vote for right candidate or party but to suggest to vote for one party and not another and term yourself as secular versus pseudo-secular is unfortunate."

The letter was sent with a prayer that he said must be read at masses on Sunday.

However, denying any political motive in the prayer, the Archbishop’s office said, “The Archbishop's letter is not political, neither it is against the government or against the honourable Prime Minister.”

“Misinformation should not be spread. It’s just an invitation for prayers, and such letters have been written in the past too,” said Robinson, secretary to Archbishop of Delhi.

In a democratic country like India, everyone enjoys the fundamental right to speak. Archbishop of Delhi has not done anything wrong by asking his flock to pray to almighty for a secular government in the coming election. All have to pray for India as we are the part of this country. The church always teaches us to pray for the nation, for the community, for victims of earthquake, cyclone, floods, etc. etc.. errespective of religion, cast and creed. With goodwill Archbishop has requested his people to pray for the secular government in the coming election. It is not to be taken as an issue for arguements.

    Dear Readers,
The letters a Bishop writes to the faithful is a pastoral letter. Pastoral letter normally deals with matters of faith and church. But a Bishop also has a responsibility to guide the faithful in matters of general concern and this is indeed one such letter.
The content of the letter is very much faith related but cause or reason behind it is indeed political scenario prevailing. People of different communities may react differently to this letter and its impact. Nevertheless, it is intended towards welfare of the people and the nation. It is nothing more than a prayer call. He has not called for protests, he has not called for any agitation, but just fasting and prayer.

My question to those who question the Bishop and Christians political leanings, is this. Sirs, how would you react to a call of prayer and fasting for the good of the nation by one of the Shankaracharya? Or a Hindu Swami? He would certainly be called Patriot right? Why not a Bishop who calls for prayer for the country?

Sorry Sirs, it is not he who is politicizing the matter, it is you!

Christians readers of the Daijiworld, please refrain from hateful comments.

    Thank you and Jai Hind

The Press is gagged , The Independence of he Judiciary is under attack, freedom of Speech is in danger, any dissent is labeled as Anti National. Fake News and Propoganda by the Govt is giving rise to social tensions.

    Nithin bro,
We understand your concern. However, please note that the Archbishop has made this statement purely out of concern given the vitiated atmosphere in the country as far as lack of communal harmony/peace is concerned. The Archbishop is not a politician and probably does not understand the political impact of the content and/or timing of his statement.

Moreover, it is not as though that all the Christian faithful will all leave their work and unite under his leadership in a political kind of way. We need to treat the Archbishop's advice/concern purely from a matter of concern point of view to pray for peace in our country irrespective of who is in power or who is voted back and I believe that is the intention here. Believe me Hindus are a peace loving people and have faced onslaught of invaders for centuries and have come out unscathed and victorious always. We truly believe we are brothers, all united Hindustanis. The militant group from Nagpur is trying to change that desperately but in the end Indians will win, Hindus will win and the RSS will lose. Don't worry there will be no political impact even though the paid media will desperately try to spin it that way.

Hindus not only support the Congress but there are Hindus supporting Samajwadi party, BSP, RJD, DMK, AAP, JDS, TMC etc. Moreover, 90% plus Congress members are Hindus. So your excitement seems to be quite misplaced. Do not take for granted that the recent results in DK and Udupi districts will be replicated in the rest of the country. Never they pray for wars ,destructions or say whom to vote. Even when Congress was in power same prayer was said. IT is for the world leaders for construct peace and harmony.

If BJP comes to power may God give them strength for communal harmony with all minority's. Prayers can move mountains. What the Arch Bishop said take it in good spirit and vote for whoever is good for our constitution.

Why 31 % HYPOCRITES scared of 2 % Indians????? Archbishop commanded his flock to pray for the Nation!!!never mentioned in his letter that, pray against Modi or Sanghis!!!! When the faithful pray, devil feel the heat of uncomfortability!!!!

Then why are you feeling the Heat of uncomfortability. Are you Devils???? As Naqli (naqvi) said and I quote : “PM is working towards inclusive growth without discriminating while breaking barriers of religion and castes. ” unquote.

If it's so, then why should you SCARED of the prayer????? If you are doing all GOOD , Collective or Individual Prayer, Fasting & Repentance will give you more Energy, Health & Vigour in your day to day work to rule the Nation .

His Lordship Archbishop of Delhi even commanded the faithful to pray for the Politicians not against them!!!!! When, 49 % Hindus haven't any problem with Archbishop's letter, why 31 % HYPOCRITES scratching their @...????? I think it's very simple .... when police said " ಕಲ್ವನ ಮಂಡ್ಡೆಡ್ ಕಾಗಜಿ " ....... what was the " ಕಲ್ವನ " reaction???? Kalva's hand automatically went to his head!!!!!
