In heart-melting gesture, mother of slain Kerala priest forgives killer

Daijiworld Media Network

Kochi, Mar 6: In an exemplary gesture that few are capable of, the mother of the priest who was slain a few days ago visited the family of the accused man and declared that she has forgiven her son's killer.

Photographs of the elderly woman, visiting the family of the man who allegedly murdered her son and declaring that she forgave the killer, are melting hearts.

Thresiamma, the mother of Father Xavier Thelakkat who was the rector of St Thomas International Shrine in Malayattor visited the family of Vattapramban Jomy, the sacristan who allegedly stabbed the priest as revenge for suspending him.

Thresiamma accompanied by her daughter Thresia, son Sebastian and relatives Pappachan, Vinoj and Biju comforted the murderer’s wife Annie.

In a heart-melting scene, both Annie and Thresiamma were in tears. Annie wept bitterly and begged pardon on behalf of her husband.

Thresiamma hugged and told her, "Let’s forget and forgive, and entrust everything in God’s hands."

According to reports, Vattapramban Jomy’s family was isolated after he was caught. The visit and forgiveness gave the grieving family comfort.

Annie was overwhelmed by Thresiamma’s visit and supposedly collapsed after they left. She had to be rushed to a hospital for primary care.

The incident

Fr Thelakat belonged to the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly, of the Syro-Malabar rite, and was the rector of the sanctuary of St Thomas in Malayattoor, a famous pilgrimage destination. Jomy worked as the sacristan at the sanctuary for 37 years. As Jomy used to come to church in an inebriated state, Fr Thelakkat fired him from his job three months ago.

On March 1, Jomy visited Fr Thelakat asking if he could be get his job back. When Thelakkat refused, he stabbed him in his leg and fled.

Jomy was arrested the next day. Head of Kalady police station Saji Markose said that Jomy was in a precarious condition and had attempted suicide but had failed. “He admitted to his crime and said that he did not intend to kill the priest but only attack him,” Markose told reporters.

But Xavier suffered grievous injuries and bled to death, while being rushed to a hospital in nearby Angamaly.

The body of the priest was handed over to the Church authorities after autopsy. The funeral was held on March 3.

In spite of knowing so much about forgetting and forgiving, we carry the coffins of people who hurt us or who have damaged our plans etc. Even with noble intentions of forgiving, when we are face to face with people who we think have wronged us we seek revenge.
What this mother has done is so graceful and admirable. While she is still in mourning to come to terms with her son's unfair end and to forgive a revengeful murderer is something truly divine.
This deed replaces the best of sermons specially during the Lenten season.

Referring to Rajesh, Udupi's comments I would like to mention that Arnab Goswami was KICKED out of Times Now channel for acting very smart. He has grown horns on his head after becoming the head honcho of REPUBLIC Channel. To counter attack
his sacking, he joined Republic TV at the behest of one of the Keralite BJP politician.

Incidentally, BJP is the party who seeked the blessings of some industrialists to open up REPUBLIC channel and make it a monopoly one to tackle all other channels which Arnab Goswami considers as FAKE. Under some guise of patronage (through god fathers). he
keeps splashing his own self-devised TRP ratings every now and then claiming it as the numero-uno and openly declaring that ALL the news channels come nowhere close to REPUBLIC.

Arnab Goswami has been trained to follow the parties guidelines by yelling loud and clear inside the studio like a moron and abruptly interrupting those on the panel or even callers on air if he finds any one who adopts a soft corner to those who are against the BJP

Arnab's primary object and functioning technique at REPUBLIC is to fully endorse all the nefarious activities of BJP as a gimmick in the development of the country. His non BJP channels are totally "floored" by him and doesn't give them a breathing space to
make their presence felt in this electronic age. This news will be considered as petty in Arnab's dicitionary and will not get a mention on his channel primarily because he is dead against Christian ideologies. Being groomed and raised from the native of Assam (ULFA) he is the ultimate authority over what is best and what is not.

Mother forgiven means forgiven. She will go to the court to release the murderer. That mother will bless him.

There is no point in forgiving and punishing. That murderer should be released from the court.

One sister killed by a north Indian mother of that sister not only forgiven she went to the court to release that murderer. Mother went to his house when he came home and had food with him.

Murderer also visited the sisters house and asked pardon and visited the grave of that sister.

Forgiving in the name of Jesus means releasing that person from all bondages including legal bondages.

This is the Teaching of Jesus.

People seem to have forgotten how Sonia Gandhi pleaded for clemency for her husband former India PM Rajiv's killer Nalini who was awarded death sentence for the sake of her daughter. Even her children Priyanka and Rahul forgave their father's killer. Below is a small extract of a report from TOI in 2008.

"Nalini, married to Murugan, sentenced to death in the assassination case, was also awarded capital punishment. Her sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment after Sonia Gandhi pleaded for clemency for the sake of the convict's daughter".

May this message reach to all the people of this country and learn that we Christians are peace loving people. Stop hatredness and killing and start living with love , peace and harmony.

Long may you live Amma. May the Lord bless you always. Your loving son is now in the arms of our Heavenly Father.

Swami Agnivesh said the following, when Gladys Staines forgave the killers of her husband Graham Staines and their two sons by burning in Orissa.

"Mrs Gladys Staines' spiritual stature as revealed through her response. Though wounded in her soul by the barbarity inflicted on her dear husband and darling children, she refused to allow her mind to be tainted by hate. She was quick to forgive her husband's killers."

Same is the case today by slain Kerala priest's mother. It is really the example set by Jesus on the cross ""Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."

Mother may forgive but the law of the land must punish the murderer to the maximum, lest there be no deterrent for other potential murderers. Mother can practice Christian teaching of forgiving but the law of the nation must come down very hard on such criminals lest criminals have a free hand. That is why even in Christian majority nations the 'law of the land' is not based on the teachings of the Bible. It is based on protecting society, individuals and their rights.

    answer to your question

1)when media is exclusively used to spread lies, to cover death of an actor throughout the day, and for all other sundry purposes, why cant it be used to cover a noble act???

2)so that others get inspired and stop drinking blood of each other for petty reasons. this is not related to just one religion but it applies to all humanity, as it is the question of a human life, so there is much for human beings to learn.

if you need further clarification then you can try the same if such unfortunate event happens to you.
