Mangaluru: Talents galore at Milagres College as students converge for 'Excelso-2K18'

Mangaluru, Feb 17: 'Excelso-2K18', an inter-collegiate Commerce, Management, Cultural and Literature fest held at Milagres College got off to a colorful start on Saturday, February 17.

In his welcome speech, principal of Milagres College Fr Michael Santhumayor said, "Excellence can achieved by taking active part in curricular and extra-curricular activities. We live in a competitive world. Knowingly or unknowingly, we compete with each other in our lives. Healthy competition brings positive results.

 

"We have a special place for extracurricular activities in our education system. The university too has instructed colleges to give importance to extracurricular activities. Hence, we are conducting 'Excelso-2K18' as a part of education. This will help students to show their talents and come up with innovative ideas and also display creativity," he added.

Walter Nandalike, founder and managing director of Daijiworld graced the occasion as chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he said, "Every time I attend a college function, I am reminded of my own college days. There is a big difference between my college days and today.

"Today’s world is completely controlled by technology. Every moment of students’ lives is influenced by technology. Students are addicted to electronic devices and gadgets. Hence, my sincere request to students is not to allow technology to dominate your lives. Getting addicted to gadgets is equal to destroying ourselves. It decreases our capacity to innovate and creativity and blocks fresh ideas and thoughts. We need to make use of gadgets only when necessary. Events like 'Excelso-2K18' will help you students come out from the influence of technology. It would be nice if all of you participate in the events. I congratulate the management and the staff on organizing this cultural fest and wish all success to the participants," he said.

Correspondent of Milagres Educational Institutions Fr Valerian D'Souza who presided over the inaugural function said, "Extracurricular activities provide an opportunity to students to think out of the box. That is the reason, educational experts and university have stressed to give importance to extracurricular activities in colleges. Today’s event is an opportunity for students to show their talent and creative ideas. Of course, there is a competition. But above that competition, is a festival and a get-together to share our concepts and ideas. I would like to advice students and teachers to make the best use of this event."

Fr Maxim D’Souza, Cassin Rodrigues, vice-principal, Ronald Pinto, president, PTA, Cecilia Pereira, vice-president, Milagres Church, Glancia Roche, staff coordinator, and Nishmitha, student coordinator were present.

    I have fond memories of my three years of Middle School at Milagres School. We too had lots of extra-curricular activities in those days, including Parliamentary Sessions, Weaving Classes and also Fancy Dress Competitions. We also had many good Sports Instructors who had several ideas that benefited the students.

    Last year, while were in Manglore, we were walking towards Tajmahal Hotel from Konkan Traders, and we were tempted to visit the Milagres School but for some reason the school was closed. We thought we should visit the Principal at the Church, but he was out.

    Extra-curricular activities, particularly for the Elementary, Middle School as well as High School are very beneficial to students who are very enthusiastic in many self created ideas in order to prove themselves marching ahead in life. Let the students who contribute for the extra-curricular activities be recognized with a Certificate of Recognition so that they can hang those Certificates on their walls, and also use them while they send their Resumes for job opportunities.

    We therefore strongly encourage extra-curricular activities that will motive each student to be creative from their early stage of education, while the School will also be able to encourage the faculty members to come up with their own ideas and thoughts for the betterment of their students.
