‘We won’t sell pakodas’: Youth stall train service in Bihar’s Arrah over unemployment

Patna, Feb 17 (Zee News): Several unemployed youth on Friday took Arrah junction railway station under siege and stalled movement of several trains. Reports said that the protesters even resorted to stone pelting, injuring some policemen and officials. The engine of Patna-Sasaram passenger train also suffered damage due to the stone pelting, reported Prabhat Khabar.

The protests started at around 8 am against lowering of age limit for recruitment in Indian Railways. The Indian Railways has declared more than 80,000 job openings for positions of Group D, additional loco pilot and technicians for 2018. The lowering of the age limit has resulted in lakhs of aspirants not being allowed to apply for the posts.

According to Prabhat Khabar, the youth raised slogans of ‘Pradhan Mantri Murdabad’, and carried placards saying ‘hum pakode nahi bechenge’ (we won’t sell pakodas), in an apparent reference to a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi wherein he said that those who earn Rs 200 at the end of the day by selling pakodas are also employed.

Train traffic in the area was severely hit as many trains remained stranded for long at stations before Arrah junction.

The statement by Prime Minister has led to war of words between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While the Congress mocked the statement by PM Modi, the BJP defended it strongly with party president Amit Shah speaking about it in his maiden speech in Rajya Sabha.

Taking a dig at PM Modi over the issue, Rahul Gandhi had taken a ‘pakoda’ break during his tour to Karnataka and the pictures of it were circulated by the Congress party. But defending PM Modi’s statement, Amit Shah had in Rajya Sabha said that selling pakoda was not shameful, and in fact better than unemployment. Hitting out at Chidambaram, Shah had said, "Some people are saying things about selling pakodas. I also read P Chidambaram’s tweet. Yes, I agree that selling pakodas is better than being unemployed.”

"Making and selling pakodas is not shameful, but equating it with begging is certainly shameful," Shah said.

Mr. CA Girish, M'lore/Dxb. You will have to wait endlessly as the Pakoda Minister will not react to such things. Yes, I agree selling pakodas is not a demeaning business but the context to which this statement was made is what assumes significance. This statement was made when the Minister was asked about his failure to keep the pre poll promises of providing employment. This is an indirect acknowledgment of Modi's utter failure to transform his promises to reality. He has failed as a chowkidar too. People have cheated the country and fled and where is our chowkidar? What is he doing? There is no use telling that the scam was started when the Congress was in power. That just doesn't wash. Yes, we all know how corrupt the Congress has been and that is exactly the reason why this chowkidar was elected. Why didn't the chowkidar stop the culprits from leaving the country even after he was alerted by one of the whistle blowers as early as in 2016?

Everyone wants govt jobs. But after joining very few works. In JNU people want degree and scholarship but don't want attendance system. So that they can just enroll and get degree while doing their own things.

Indian youths may have degrees but not skills. Most of them think that once they get degree they should get job and settle down in job. This is why most of Indians working in service based companies not much in new innovations.

In my company me and my boss looking for few good developers since 2 years. But no one knows good coding. They just have some theory knowledge. And if we give them opportunity they don't want to learn too. They just expect huge salary with out knowing actual work.

It's not that there are no jobs. It's us we are not suitable for jobs. Govt can not provide a office job to all where they go and sit in office behind desk. In countries like Japan, USA even senior citizens work in skilled field. They don't have concept of settling down in life. They don't even get much interest for fixed deposit in bank as we Indians do.
