Afghan forces retake Tabar valley, Taliban flee

Kabul, Dec 18 (IANS): Afghan forces regained control of the key Tabar valley in Sari Pul province, forcing Taliban militants to flee, a police official said on Monday.

"The government forces after three days of fierce fighting were able to regain control of the valley on Sunday night and the Taliban rebels, after suffering huge casualties, fled the area," the official told Xinhua news agency.

Taliban militants overran Tabar valley last week in an attempt to attack the provincial capital of Sari Pul city, rendering thousands homeless.
