Mangaluru: Wait is over - New railway underpass at Padil finally opened for public

Mangaluru Nov 15: The long awaited railway underpass at Padil costing Rs 16.50 crore was inaugurated by Member of Parliament Nalin Kumar Kateel here on Wednesday, November 15.

Addressing the gathering Nalin Kumar Kateel said, "This road was a long pending project which was delayed due to technical problems. There are a lot of obstacles in the coastal region including monsoon which delays the completion of development works by 5-6 months. The construction of the existing railway undepass will begin from the next week and will be completed within 3-4 months,”

“The NDA government has released funds for development works in the district. The 65 km stretch from BC Road to Addole will be concretized. Minister Nitin Gadkari has also ordered the completion of road work from Pumpwell to Thokkottu by March 2018. Rs 10 crore has been sanctioned for the maintenance of road from BC Road to Suratkal, and Rs 28 crore for the maintenance of service road from BC Road to Surathkal," he added.

“Rs 500 crore has been sanctioned for a four-lane road from BC Road to Suratkal under Sagaramala fund. Survey and DPR has been completed for BC Road-Mulky, Melkar-Konaje, Kalladka-Charvathur and Subramanya-Gundya road and work will be commenced once land acquisition is completed,” he said

The railway underpass was supposed to be inaugurated in March 2017 but was delayed as Pallakad railway division planned to start track doubling work. The inauguration of the new railway underpass will definitely bring relief to the people that would help vehicles to take alternative routes and avoid traffic congestion on the existing two-lane road. The NHAI had completed 90 per cent of work, but Pallakad railway division’s request to provide extra space for an additional track at the last moment delayed the functioning of railway underpass.

The task of building underpass with the train in function was quite a challenge for NHAI. They had to dig up huge tunnel and push a concrete box when train was running above underpass. NHAI even received warning from the railway department on damage being done to the existing track. The underpass was constructed with hydraulic technology.

Corporator Roopa D Bangera, Vijay Kumar, Sudhir Kumar Shetty, NHAI officer Ajith, engineer Arun and others were present.

First repair that road from Kulur flyover to NITK suratkal toll. People collect toll but never bother about the road around. Its very pathetic road and very shameful that toll road itself is like hell. Many tourist people will come to visit mangalore and it is one of the major highway. Highway itself not good, these people are worried about internal roads.

The present bridge so wide & tall dwarfs the present underpass in every count.
If British can build such things way back why our Skill India has no technology to build a new one with matching measure?
Now the existing road will be blocked to construct a slab under the existing railway bridge, is it required or done to narrow it down to the underpass level?
Does development needs to go through such labor pains?

This project is 100% failure, it's totally unscientific, in a short period of time the roads hv demaged, there is responsible NH officer to look after or attend, the new underpass itself an example of total failure of this project.... All citizens of Mangalore or outsider should stop paying toll

it is really a shame that such a small project takes them years to complete and like shameless people everyone wants to be in the photograph when they somehow complete it without proper finishing touches. These people should see the way major road and flyover projects are completed in Dubai. Those familiar would no the way Sana Interchange at Karama is progressing just 6 to 7 months (wish I could upload a photograph) and already they have completed almost 70% of the work which includes a flyover and a major underpass. We have a long way to go to become a smart City

If that is the case, how can one say that the underpass finally opened? When you say that the work will be completed within 3-4 months, it may also mean 1-2 years also.

Though new Railway underpass is opened for public whats the use if containers and height lorries (carrying vehicles etc) cant enter through this new underpass. they should have found solution for this.

What has BJP done in the last 3 years apart from spending thousands of crores on statues and scams like demonetization and all?? You should have a littlr shame at least when you compare the 70 years and these 3 years. The Pumpwell to Thokkottu stretch work is happening since three years without an inch being moved. Still shamelessly people talk about development.

In mangalore it has become a norm to inflict as much as pain to the road users before giving them small perk. So people who suffered for better part of the year are happy about getting small reprieve from bad roads. It's like escaping prison. It should be matter of shame to those who are at the helm of affairs to delay such ordinary things to indefinite time. And after so many years the MP inaugurated with full media glare. He should be apologising people for the inconvenience caused for so many years.

Now the Padil underpass finally opened. How come the railways allow auto rickshaws to be parked at the Mangalore Junction from the station main entrance to the other side I mean the paltform 2&3 exit. I see this at around 9:00 am they use the road even on the railway property and also the road, causing a great inconvenience to other motorists why cannot anyone do something to solve this problem. The auto rickshaws go upto 50 there should be a maximum limit at the railway station.
