Andhra: Drunk man rapes woman in broad daylight, no one helps

Visakhapatnam, Oct 23 (Deccan Chronicle): A 28-year-old woman was raped by a man, who was allegedly drunk, on the footpath of Vishakhapatnam in broad daylight on Sunday. The passers-by did not come to the aide of the woman, instead an autorickshaw driver recorded the crime on his mobile phone.

The accused was identified as 23-year-old Ganji Siva, a truck driver, according to The Indian Express. Police arrested him on Sunday night after the autorickshaw driver gave them the video of the incident.

The incident took place between Railway New Colony and Railway Station at 2 pm. The woman was sitting under a tree when Siva sexually assaulted her. She has been admitted to King George Hospital, police said.

Siva made threatening gestures at passers-by, which discouraged them from helping the woman, police said.

“The woman had left her home in Vepagunta near Pendurthi on the outskirts of Vizag after a tiff with her husband and had arrived in Vizag on a bus early Sunday. She took shelter under a tree on the pavement when Siva assaulted her. He is an alcoholic and drug addict,” Inspector Ramana told the IE.

"The video shows several people passing by but no one stopped to help the woman. Her husband is a labourer and they fought Sunday morning after which she left home and took shelter on the pavement. She has been admitted to KGH," he added.

Where is the National Commission for Women, do they come out only when a celebrity or high class is involved where can debate and teach all the rules to the viewers. Certainly don't blame the Cow-rakshak they are busy watching the on road traffic, tracking vehicles carrying their Gau Matas for slaughter, so they can't afford to cause errors in the noble, divine and holy mission. Their assignment is to watch the roads not footpaths.

What a shame for the onlookers who could not help that woman being raped in broad daylight. They all should have got together and tied that idiot man to the same tree and beaten him up till he bled to death. Then they could have called the police who are the last persons who come after all the show is over. This could have helped the woman from being raped.

@Evans C.Sumitra,Udipi,USA.it is clear ,the onlookers were there to see the happening and enjoy.Even the rickshawala made a video ,why do you think?only to present to police.?Rather he could have informed the police first before making video. To arrest a drunken man is easier with many people together.Shame on all men and onlookers. It was enough only to hit him with a faust or drag with legs. How would they react suppose a drunken man was chasing a cow?No respect to a woman /lady.To which stage did we reach in this computer age?Make a case against the rickshawala, how did he make a video of her rape without her permission?Disguesting.left her suffer instead of life saving.Accused should be hanged ,or life long behind bars.People who didnt help too should be punished with fine.specially rickshawala.

    Very sorry state of affairs.

People at least could have shouted and gathered a big mob to counter the offender or call an emergency police number .

Highly irresponsible. When an woman is helplessly calling for help, people watch and go or take videos.

Few days we saw a women being stabbed in Metro station and people did not come to her help. She was killed very brutally.

When we talk of Govt, police etc. we too have some responsibility. Yes i agree some people might be scared to counter the offender but at least call police or shout to gather a mob and at least something could be done. We cannot just walk away like that or shoot picture.

There will be candle light vigil by the same people to arrest the culprit. There they will gather like in a picnic, bring charumburi etc.

It is no doubt a shameful criminal act, but who knows if the rapist had gun or knife? If that is the case , people would hesitate. Anybody disagrees?

Oh! What a tragedy that no one ventured to stop the crime. Onlookers and passersby who witnessed the crime are just as guilty, and if they can be identified they should be severely punished as well, besides the criminal rapist; the rickshaw driver who clicked the scene, in particular deserves more severe punishment as he is likely to publish it.

"The video shows several people passing by but no one stopped to help the woman."
    Unbelievable.
Passerby were interested more in watching the show than helping the victim. What a culture. shameful in the name humanity.
That man should be cast rated.
