Bengaluru: Tipu Jayanthi - more leaders do not want their names in invitations

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Oct 23: The demand not to include their names for the official Tipu Jayanthi programmes appears to be gaining momentum, with more people coming out with similar requests. The first one to demand exclusion of his name from the invites was minister and Uttara Kannada MP, Ananthkumar Hegde.

MPs, Suresh Angadi and Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, and some other legislators have come up with request to exclude their names when printing Tipu Jayanthi invitations, it is gathered. Yatnal, speaking to media persons at Vijayapura on Sunday, said that he would be happy to take part in Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Jayanthi, Veera Savarkar Jayanthi etc if they are organized instead of Tipu Jaytnhi. He said he would be writing to the deputy commissioner against adding his name in the invitations, and that he will not take part in this celebration.

Nalin Kumar Kateel

Speaking at Belagavi, MP, Suresh Angadi, said that Tipu was responsible for large scale massacre of Hindus. "I am opposed to the idea of celebrating Tipu's birth anniversary. Congress has thought of this gimmick as a part of its vote bank politics. Congress might think of celebrating the birth anniversary of Mohammed Ghazni at a later date. We cannot tolerate this. Well-known researcher, Chidananda Murthy, has placed before the people the details wrong deeds indulged in by Tipu, backed by records. Congress is unnecessarily trying to make a hero out of him," he stated.

Home minister, Ramalinga Reddy, speaking at Kalaburagi, recollected that Yeddyurappa had taken part in Tipu Jayanthi celebrations when in KJP and given pose for photo with a cap and sword in hand and questioned his motive of opposing it now. Minister, U T Khader, speaking at Bantwal, said that names are printed in invitations as per the provision of the constitution and not based on individual identities. Siddaramaiah said just like Kitturu Chennamma, Basavanna, Kempe Gowda etc, Tipu Jayanthi will also be celebrated.

Home minister, Ramalinga Reddy, addressing a press conference at Police Bhavana at Kalaburagi, said that request for deletion of names from invitations will be decided by the deputy commissioners of respective districts on the basis of protocol. He warned those taking law into their hands in the guise of opposing Tipu Jayanthi celebrations of taking stern steps.

Attacking temples during war wasn't exactly unusual (for example, the Maratha attack on the Tirupati shrine in 1759 is little remembered). But this was no ordinary place of worship. It had been founded a thousand years before by the father of Hindu Advaita philosophy, Adi Shankaracharya. The monk set up an abbey in each corner of the subcontinent: Shringeri in the South, Puri in the East, Dwaraka in the West and Joshimath in the North.

Given this lineage, the Sringeri monastery had been patronised by rulers – both Hindu and Muslim – ever since it was founded. Tipu continued this tradition and maintained a close relationship with the abbey, sending it valuable gifts and awarding it tax-free land. In fact, in his personal correspondence, Tipu would address the monastery’s swamy, head reverentially as “jagadguru” or “ruler of the world”.

This prestige meant the temple was also wealthy, which was probably why the Marathas sacked it – the first time it was to see such a calamity in its millennia-long history. The Marathas stripped the monastery of its considerable wealth, killed many Brahmins and desecrated the idol of the temple's presiding deity, the goddess Sharada.

After the attack, the Swamy, who fled the sack, wrote urgently to Tipu asking for his help in reconsecrating the idol of Sharada. Tipu replied back angrily, writing in Sanskrit, “People do evil smiling but will suffer the penalty in torments of agony." The Sultan also made monetary arrangements for the consecration of the Goddess and also sent along his token gifts for the idol.

With the rise of Hindutva in Karnataka in the 1990s, Tipu’s image was sought to be changed from a secular freedom fighter to Muslim tyrant. In the end, the Tipu Jayanti fracas provides a ringside view of how modern politics uses history to create and reinforce present-day identities.

Brittlebank, Hasan, Chetty, Habib and Saletare, amongst others, argue that stories of Tipu Sultan's religious persecution of Hindus and Christians are largely derived from the work of early British authors such as Kirkpatrick[5] and Wilks,[6] whom they do not consider to be entirely reliable.[7]A. S. Chetty argues that Wilks’ account in particular cannot be trusted,[8] Irfan Habib and Mohibbul Hasan argue that these early British authors had a strong vested interest in presenting Tipu Sultan as a tyrant from whom the British had "liberated" Mysore.[9] Mohibbul Hasan writes "The reasons why Tipu was reviled are not far to seek. Englishmen were prejudiced against him because they regarded him as their most formidable rival and an inveterate enemy, and because, unlike other Indian rulers, he refused to become a tributary of the English Company. Many of the atrocities of which he has been accused were allegedly fabricated either by persons embittered and angry on account of the defeats which they had sustained at his hands, or by the prisoners of war who had suffered punishments which they thought they did not deserve. He was also misrepresented by those who were anxious to justify the wars of aggression which the Company's Government had waged against him. Moreover, his achievements were belittled and his character blackened in order that the people of Mysore might forget him and rally round the Raja, thus helping in the consolidation of the new regime." [10] This assessment is echoed by Brittlebank in her recent work where she writes that Wilks and Kirkpatrick must be used with particular care as both authors had taken part in the wars against Tipu Sultan and were closely connected to the administrations of Lord Cornwallis and Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley.-

They are like-minded people and their refusal to be included in the CM's invitation is well justified. If they accepted, they would be honoring a mass murderer whose likes are Hitler who sent millions to the gas chamber. Celebrating Tipu Jayanthi is like celebrating Hitler jayanthi. How would you like that?

The very crowd that's against Tippu Jayanthi celebrated the same only a few years ago! If that's good then - ie when BJP was in power - what happened between NOW and THEN?

BJP finds itself struggling to gain in the coming elections - is looking for - anything to stir up the common men and women. The religious fervor may gain a few votes!

This is what I call blatant bigotry - that BJP so famously known for!
if its convenient they will burn their own temples! much less churches and mosques. Anything to gain
power but when they had power they fell short - corruption mounted and Yeddi still today denies ever collecting crores from Reddy brothers.
All I ask is that BJP must sing ONE SONG with ONE TUNE!

Tipu jayanti should not be held. He was anti hindus and anti christians. He has killed lot of hindus and christians. He has destroyed many temples and churches and tried to destroy many. I know there is one church in South Kanara and Tipu tried to attack it. But local hindus saved the church from Tipu. Till now that family is being felicitated at annual feast of the church as a gratitude for the noble gesture by this family's ancestors. By celebrating Tipu Jayanthi, Congress is commiting a big blunder and it will result in loss in vote bank.

For few who are wearing orange glases and dont want to be part of it, stay away and relax. Other will celebrate it with proud.

They do not have a problem to celebrate any Maratha leaders birth or death anniversary who destroy Shrigeri petta and looted huge money and jewelry which was cost cores of rupees on that period but they are against Tippu Sultan who saved the shringeri petta and reconstructed Matt and granted huge amount to the Matt giving full security to the swami ji of Matt. The documents are still in the Matt and also his two letters wrote by himself to swamiji. How can you people tell that he was anti Hindu? Now tell me which of these were the Noble job of Tipu? Killing 60,000 poor people or just protecting a Temple. If Tipu is Compared with Sadam Hussain, ( Sadam also protected many Churches in Iraq from mischievers, but still got the death penalty for killing his own people) in Genocide, Sadam will get 2nd number.
