Udupi, Oct 16: The Udupi police on Monday October 16 arrested a Nigerian student in Manipal for overstaying in the country.

The accused, Raji Roqeeb Babatunde (25) from Nigeria was pursuing masters in occupational therapy in Manipal School of Allied Health Sciences.

He came to India on August 24, 2011 and did his graduation in Manipal, following it up with post-graduation.

His visa expired on December 31, 2016, and from January this year, he has been staying illegally in Manipal without valid documents.

On Monday, Raji was arrested under the Foreigners Act.

We want to attract foreign students to come and study here. We want foreigner to come and invests in "Make in India" etc.,
Should have helped and guided him to renew his visa rather than sending him to Judicial custody.

On the contrary it was his duty to approach the relevant authorities to renew his visa. If he doesn't know the formalities, some travel agency would have helped him to extend his stay in the country.

One thing I have observed: we Indians want privileges from all countries of the world, then we are quick to criminalize anyone overstaying in the country. We have to be strict regarding outsiders entering the country but if they are not involved in criminal activities we should treat them with respect and dignity. Do to others what we expect others do to us - an ancient saying. This is true religion. In this regard we need to shine and be a great nation on the planet.
