Mangaluru: Police to form teams to tackle bus operators who violate rules

Daijworld Media Network - Mangaluru (EP)

Mangaluru, Sep 16: City police commissioner T R Suresh warned stern action against bus operators who collect excess fare, do not issue tickets or return change, violate the reservation of seats for women and senior citizens.

The commissioner addressed this issue, on Friday, September 15, on receiving a complaint during a direct phone-in programme.

The police department in Mangaluru will form teams to take action against violators of rules in the bus. Civil police together with traffic police will be deployed for the purpose. Additional staff will be appointed in areas where traffic problems are prevalent, said T R Suresh.

Another citizen asked for facilities to keep school bags in buses. Citizens complained that buses on route No 16 charged more fare, and buses on Padil-Maroli and other routes ran only in the mornings and evenings. A citizen urged the prohibition of KSRTC buses on Lighthouse Hill Road. Another, asked for bus facility on the interior route at Konaje. Bus plying on Matadakani Road creates problems as the road is narrow, said another citizen.

Other concerns raised

Several other issues were addressed including traffic congestion in Hampankatta and exorbitant rickshaw fares at Mangaluru Central Railway Station and Moodbidri market.

Callers also urged for a speed-breaker on the Nanthur-Kadri road to prevent accidents, development of RTO testing track at Vamanjoor, prohibit the sale of eats on the footpath near Mangala stadium, pedestrian crossing near Hampankatta clock tower, and a solution to the Sunday parking menace at Urwa market.

A caller raised concerns over the possible misuse of the path at the old port. Callers also suggested installation of CCTV camera on Kottara Chowki road. One urged for senior citizen meetings in Barke police station.

Traffic department ACP Thilakchandra, ASI Yousuf, and head constable Purushotham were present for the 57th police phone in programme.

This is not something which is new. The worst traffic offenders are Buses, rickshaws and two wheelers. Apart from exorbitant fares which the bus operators may collect, bus drivers drive recklessly and stop at non-designated bus halts. Of course overloading the buses is a common sight.

Rickshaws and two wheelers are often seen overtaking on the wrong side and in the case of accidents car drivers are always blamed.

I am glad that Mr. Suresh has taken serious note of the defaults. Of course the traffic wardens are willing workers and they can indeed work in conjunctions with the traffic police force. Mr. Tilakchandra is fully aware of the willingness of wardens to render whatever help that may be needed.

Pity this cop for coming up with amateurish ideas without touching the serious issues plaguing the private bus operators.

Even if these routes were to be nationalized tomorrow morning, govt. operators are equally incompetent to run the show efficiently in spite of the advantages they have over and above the pvt. bus operators.

We live in a peculiar circumstances!!!

Best thing for the Police would be abolish the Private Bus Mafia in the twin districts. The bus operators think that they are doing a favour, not thinking that they earn their bread and butter from the citizens of both the districts.
They change the route as if they own the roads, the bus staff ask commuters to alight at anytime of the journey if they are late. The city, service &express are mere "killer buses". When will the foot board be below 52cm from the ground ? Looks like the DC's order has been forgotten.

Instead taking all these pains better to nationalise the routes and introduce city buses to tackle the issue. City bus operators will not at all improve inspite your taking action.

The issue mentioned about Padil-Maroli route buses is very true. These buses travel in groups and at high speed. If you miss a bus, you'll be stranded in the bus stop for a long time. Also another major issue is about ear-shattering vacuum horns in buses. Each bus has 2 or 3 types of horns. This is a major problem near Gerosa School area where I reside. Hope the authority takes action.

In my opinion they should start some training classes for drivers and conductors of buses as well as autorickshaw drivers.
Otherwise nothing is going to change.

Sir, humble request, stop these drivers from using air horns. The blaring horns are the reason why many Mangaloreans suffer from headache, hearing loss and disturbed mind.

A team of good people had once volunteered for a noble cause- NO HONKING or something like that. For sometime, the horns were gone. Now even some Autos and lorryies have these horns.

I hope you will do the needful sir.

Give a helpline number where citizens can call and inform if any buses are using these blaring horns.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry looking at the issues the commissioner is addressing! In Mangalore 99% of the public honor the Ladies seats reservations and even give their seats for women with kids and elderly. Not issuing of tickets is not a police issue and doesn't concern the passengers much and its the bus owners responsibility to make the conductors issue ticket.
The major issues are City buses endangering public life and ignoring every safety procedures while driving like,
    1. Sudden breaking without signal on the road and thus causing accidents.
    2. stopping the Bus on the road and not at the bus-stop and causing traffic jams.
    3. excessive honking and threatening other small vehicles on the road.
    4. overtaking at high speed in city roads and putting every citizens life in danger and specially major cause for two wheeler rider deaths!
Start booking offenders for this and every other problem will be solved. The police teams can be better utilized to tackle these serious issues which are life threatening.
But I doubt with Bus drivers lobby this can be implemented.

Sirs, I request also that the buses do not give any consideration to elderly, handicapped, children, in boarding and alighting of the buses. The driver and conductors work together & do not stop at the necessary bus stops. They stop at their own convenient bus stops and don't give a chance for d passengers to get down from d buses. But whereas in Bangalore it's not like that until and unless the passengers alight or board d bus the whistle is then given. Also the handicapped seats, senior citizens seats r for show only where d senior citizen has to stand and the young generation Sit. The conductor turns a blind eye to all that..... But what to do the mandatory govt is like that if somebody speaks then d conductor insults them or it becomes a issue with no positive results. I request that sirs that if u can do something about this then many many problems if the common man will b reduced. Thank you.
