End of the road for 10-year-old diesel vehicles in NCR

New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS): The green court on Thursday dismissed the government's plea seeking modification to an earlier order banning 10-year-old diesel vehicles in the National Capital Region (NCR) as emissions from the fuel can cause cancer.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) noted that one diesel vehicle causes pollution equivalent to 24 petrol or 40 CNG vehicles.

The NGT in November 2014 banned all 10-year-old diesel vehicles in Delhi, even as the Ministry of Heavy Industry opposed the move.

The Ministry in January this year moved the Supreme Court against the NGT order. The apex court sent the matter back to the green court.

The Ministry informed the court that diesel vehicles have higher fuel efficiency which leads to 10-15 per cent lower carbon dioxide emission compared to petrol vehicles.

The NGT on Thursday told the Centre that previous efforts to get the order modified did not get any support at the Supreme Court. "We are not inclined to modify our order," the green court said in its fresh order.
