Mangaluru: Auto drivers hold protest against Uber counter at railway station

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 14: The auto rickshaw drivers, who have always been known to be resisting efforts to begin app-based taxi services, have now expressed their ire against an app-based taxi service company openly by holding protest at the central railway station here on Tuesday September 12.

Taxi operators have been complaining since long that auto rickshaw drivers have not been allowing taxis to enter the railway station. After Uber launched its taxi service at the central station here on September 2, auto rickshaw drivers got angry. When a passenger had come to the station in Uber taxi, the auto drivers had opposed it. On September 12 evening, the auto drivers stopped Uber taxis and sent them back and demanded for the closure of the Uber counter in the railway station. Pandeshwar police station inspector, K U Belliappa, intervened in the matter and eased the situation.

Many taxi drivers had evinced interest when app-based taxi services were introduced in the city but thereafter the drivers had held protest against both Ola and Uber, which operate these services. However, passengers have been appreciative of these services as auto drivers many a time are known to demand exorbitant fare particularly to railway stations and some other destinations. The users are aware that in case of app-based taxis, the drivers cannot collect fare in excess of determined rates. Therefore, the auto drives are up in arms against these services.

The people who have to frequently travel to railway stations and airports say that Uber is an authorized mode of transport and therefore deserve to be offered protection by the police. They also point out that at night auto rickshaws demand fare of Rs 300 from Hampankatta to Kankanady railway station whereas one can travel by Uber taxi by paying just Rs 100 and comfortable take with them large baggage. They feel that frustrated at the competitive rates at which these taxi services have been operating, auto drivers have been resisting such services.

In a auto only 3 can travel and with baggage it's bit congested and they give a weird look when u say some inside place and they charge more and from mangalore junction to kavoor at midnight they ask for around 300 to 400 where as this taxi service charge u around 160 to 200 and they are safe one can share location and 4 can sit comfortably and there is extra space for baggage. UBER AND OLA shld be given more pickup and drop and railway and airport .

98% Auto drivers in Mangalore are arrogant, rude and looters. if you find a someone with good behavior and fair charge, then you are the luckiest person in the city. They refuse to take you places where they don't like. they will come to you if u are seen on road side, ask your destination and leave the spot without even uttering a word. most of communal goons are auto drivers here !!! Don't expect 1_2 rupees change in return, you rarely get it. Reckless driving, Ignoring traffic rules, choosing longer route to destination, excessive charges at night such as many more issues are there related to these city auto drivers. Unions should understand, Auto's rickshaw's are choice of poor so they should be fair with passengers in every manner.

This is precisely why our city will never move ahead. How can they dictate what we citizens want? It's our right whether we pick an auto or a cab. Both are legitimate businesses. How can our so called leaders even tolerate this nonsense? Goonda ism at its best!!! Pathetic!!!! Even in cities like Bangalore. Mumbai, Chennai we see no such problems. But here one day its the private bus owners and if its not them then it is the auto drivers. THIS IS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION THAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!! High time to take stern calls. But then I wonder whether the administration ever will or they will continue to play vote bank politics till the end of time!

It is time to do away with autos. They are the most unstable vehicles with even more unstable drivers. They do not follow the traffic rules nor any sense of decency. If you notice when an auto does not have a fare he is in slow mode, but the moment he gets a fare he is in ambulance mode. No indicators nor brake lights. Only gallis.
The govt should ban autos and they should drive either the altos or nanos, some small car which gives some protection to the passengers. At least we will not have anymore 3 legged Jakes.

Uber and Ola are the best service providers. Among the Auto drivers, there are good people among them, which I have noticed at Kankanady bus stop when people arrive by bus from outstations at 4.30a.m. as I go at that time to pick up my daughter at that time they do not refuse people. This is an exceptionally good. But at Railway stations, they are big looters.

Secondly who are these Auto Drivers to tell other not to operate taxis and taxis, who also do legal business. Uber and Ola are doing legal business and good service. Let these Auto and Taxi Drivers do not dictate their terms to the public and if it does not suit them , let them pack off and look for something else.

Request the police and RTO not to yield to these people demands. Where is Mr. Ivan now. Let him educate these guy for the betterment of Mangalore City and not to pamper these Auto and Taxi Drivers. i do not say all are bad. Jai Hind

Theives demanding the right to rob people. It is peoples choice what they opt for. Why are the auto driver at railway station and taxi drivers at airports feeling threatened. It is for a simple reason that easy money comes without much work.

They never want such change because then they will have to actually start working honestly.

Shame on you auto and taxi drivers at the airport and railway stations. This is a change that is happening. Accept the change and grow along with it or be left behind.

Actually, no one cares for passengers. A simple case in point is our government/RTO is not able to force driver identification details within Autos in Mangaluru despite it being in force in Bengaluru, RTO has no excuse or explanation. This means that this auto driver mafia is quite influential with all political parties without exception. Politicians don't get simple principle of choice. Passengers must have choice and it cannot be scuttled by extralegal means or gunda giri. If government has been able to deal with auto drivers of Bengaluru, they can do it in Mangaluru as well. Establishment will have to shown some spine for that to happen

Why are these guys protesting ? They refuse to ply passengers when the routes are not convenient to them and are holding the people of the city at ransom. The Police should take stringent action against them and their unions. I have had bitter experiences with auto drivers in Mangalore. It is for the people to decide and not these anti social elements. We want Uber and private providers and cannot be blackmailed. Mangalore will be a better place if these autos are banned permanently.

Uber & Ola should be allowed in mangalore its peoples choice which they should go for auto drivers or taxi drivers cant decide who should be allowed or not allowed. These people literally loot the passengers they take more than the actual price.
Uber & Ola should be allowed to airport also because these airport taxis are really expensive where in ola /uber will cost less. From airport to mangalore they charge 600 for just 12 kms but in Bangalore from bangalore airport to racecourse its nearly 35kms and we pay max is 800. This is a serious issue to be taken up.

IT IS GENERAL PUBLIC AT LARGE DECIDE WHICH SERVICE THEY REQUIRE.

100% PUBLIC PREFER APP BASED TAXI SERVICES SINCE IT IS VERY CHEAP.

OF COURSE IF I SAY ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE THEY ALWAYS SUPPORT RICKSHAW DRIVERS BECAUSE FROM THEM ONLY THESE ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE CAN MAKE HOOLIGANISM.

Uber and Ola need to be allowed to have a counter if required. Moreover, the passengers are free to use the services of their choice. These auto drivers not only charging more, most of the times, they are not ready to take you if the destinations are nearby.
It is up to the passengers to avail the services of their choice. No one can force the passengers to avail the services of auto only. Nowadays people prefer app based services as they are available everywhere at any time and the charges are very reasonable. Uber and Ola need to be permitted to have a counter also; if necessary.

Please put an end to this mafia of Auto and Taxi services. Until Uber/Ola/Cab services came into existence, I was demanded to pay Rs. 650/- for an airport drop/pick up. Now, I just call the online cab service and happily pay Rs. 300/- for a drop to airport. Of-course the service to pickup from the airport is not available due to mafia of Taxi drivers.

Auto drivers charge 1.5 at meter from 8.30 p.m. and double after 10 p.m. I wonder how is this justified and why authorities are not curbing this loot. Good news that there is uber service from Railway station.
