Sitharaman takes charge as Defence Minister

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS): Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday took charge as India's first full-fledged woman Defence Minister.

Sitharaman was elevated to the rank of a Cabinet Minister and given the crucial charge in Sunday's reshuffle of the Narendra Modi Cabinet.

However, she could not take charge as Arun Jaitley, who has been holding the additional charge of Defence, was on a visit to Japan for a bilateral dialogue.

Jaitley had said on Sunday he was going to Japan for the meet even though ideally Sitharaman should have attended it but logistical arrangements at the last moment were not possible.

In past, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had held the defence portfolio twice - from December 1 to December 21 in 1975, and January 14, 1980 to January 15, 1982.

100% right, no comparison to India Gandhi.

Indira Gandhi got everything in platter as her father’s legacy whereas Nirmala Sitaraman was self-made woman.
Indira Gandhi became PM and DM because she was daughter of Nehru whereas Nirmala Sitaraman became DM based on her Hard Work and Merit.

We just cannot compare India Gandhi and Nirmala Sitaraman.

    Jai Hind

    Anirudh,
Becoming PM of India time and again is not the same as becoming CEO of a family run Corporate. People need to vote you to power based on how you perform and deliver. You need to win elections. People vote for those whom they want to be their leader. Family members cannot make you PM even once let alone over and over again. Family or no family former PM Shrimati Indira Gandhi broke the back of Pakistan when with her leadership East Pakistan was liberated and made an independent nation Bangladesh. She is further credited for destroying the Khalistan movement where some Sikh groups wanted to secede from the Indian Union for which she ultimately had to sacrifice her life. However, BJP bhakts prefer to only remember her for her one mistake for the period of the Emergency. However, we remember her this way "INDIRA ALWAYS KEPT INDIA UNITED". Hard work ? No PM has worked harder and performed better for the nation than Indiraji.
Nirmala Sitharaman has not even won a Lok Sabha seat meaning that she has not been voted directly by the people. She is a Rajya Sabha MP and now given the Defence minister position. Being a hard worker does not necessarily mean one will produce positive results. Hard work alone does not produce results at that level. Tact, smartness, firmness, courage, determination, ability to persuade are some of the other traits needed to succeed without taint. Does she have them ? Time will tell.

    Mangalrean,

I do not wish to contradict on the matter.

Eating is cultivated habbit true, and from pre-historic times humans were consuming meat for survival. Moreover, a balanced diet is always welcome but forced or restrictions on choice of food should not be implemented. Religious sentiments for those who revere Cows (Gau Matha) why others should suffer?

jeevan writes somthing as if Stharaman (being defence Minister) should make soldier to go vegetarian. That's all.

Total country is invovled in such issue and better to spare the soldiers for the country.

Soldiers at the frontiers and high altitude like Saichen Glaciers cannot live only on veg. Idli sambar and Masala dosa and Puri Bajji cannot build required energy and physical strength to fight the enemy aggression. The must have red meat to build enough proteins in the body.
Vegetarian food no doubt fills the stomach and within no time .......need to replace as it digests fast. Whereas meat remains solid inside for longer time. Also chilly or fry gives enough energy to boost............!

Please let the soldiers do their duty.
Leave Beef politics to civilians & politicians.

    Sir,

As much as I appreciate your good thoughts for the soldiers...

Unfortunately there is no truth in the body needing proteins from meat (red or any other colour).
The largest land animals and sea animals of today consume no animals and yet have more body mass than several humans put together.
There are vegan body builders. Some communities like Jains and Buddhists have lived without animal proteins for over 2,000 years.

We eat meat out of habit, and not because the body needs it.

No hope of that. Surgical strikes are only happening on innocent legal cattle transporters by lynching mobs with patronage of sympathizing leaders.

Modiji team is best ever team we have since independence who is dedicated for society not for accumulating funds for 10's of their next generation.
    Good Luck to Sitharaman .

There is no comparison to late Indira Gandhi's courage (even 10%)
That's why she was named Iron lady.
Defence portfolio should have gone to some Rtd. defence personality with thorough knowledge of warfare and defence system.
