Mangaluru, Jul 26: Continuing her keen watch on the illegal goings-on in the city, mayor Kavita Sanil and her team of MCC officials on Wednesday July 26 inspected the traffic, reckless parkings, illegal no-parking zones and encroachments in parts of the city.

The mayor and her team were accompanied by DCP Hanumantharaya and ACP (traffic) Tilakchandra.

The team inspected the route from PVS circle to all the way to State Bank for illegal parkings and encrochments.

Along the way, officials ordered petty shop owners to remove their carts and shops by evening, and warned them of action if the orders were not followed.

Illegal parking signs put up commercial complexes and shops were removed by the officials. One of the commercial establishments included Medifair complex at Karangalpady.

Also, hoardings were removed near Dr Ambedkar circle (Jyothi) and several vendors who had lined up their businesses on the footpath at Hampankatta were evicted. Some stalls near an ice cream parlour were also cleared. Some of the street vendors and petty shop owners were told to remove their businesses, with a warning that if they do not, notice would be issued.

Protest

The street vendors at Hampankatta and State Bank staged a flash protest as the mayor and her team moved to evict the encroachments on the footpaths. Nearly a hundred people gathered at the spot and shouted slogans against the MCC for trying to evict them.

The vendors contended that it was 'wrong' on the part of the MCC to evict them from the area without making separate arrangements for them to sell their goods.

The mayor, however, said that separate arrangement had already been made for them at State Bank and 208 vendors had even been given identity cards to conduct their businesses, but none of them made use of the facility.

Speaking to reporters, the mayor Kavita said, "Today we undertook inspection to check illegal parkings and encroachments along with the traffic police, corporators and the officials. Most of the petty shops and street vendors have been cleared. But when we reached State Bank area, the street vendors went on a sudden protest against us for clearing the streets.

"Even though we have provided separate space for street vendors, they are not making use of it. We are not getting enough cooperation from them. They make it difficult for pedestrians to walk on the footpaths. There is also foul smell in the area because of their businesses. We have given identity cards to 208 vendors to run their businesses in the separate space provided to them, but none of them cooperates," the mayor said.

Finally, the police intervened and dispersed the crowds. The street vendors were eventually evicted.

Some days ago, the mayor and her team had raided illegal skill game centres and massage parlours in the city for functioning without trade licences.

Continue the term of this Mayor (Kavitha Sanil) for an0ther year because of he r guts and boldness to carry out such important works in connection with the development of Mangalore. What is the use if a CHAPPE Mayor comes for next term?

Very proud of your work Madam Mayor. A temporary map at the old location showing the new vendor location will help the regular customers to find the new spot. You may say that advertising is not your job, but if not advertised, then they will come back to the same location and all the effort of cleansing the footpath will go waste, while you can concentrate on more serious issues like how to improve the pedestrian movements in the city and dedicated parking facility and identifying a way to make Mangalore green again, by planting new trees that were cut for road broadening. The people will only complain saying "kandapate sehke maraya" but will not plant a single tree in their compounds!!

It is a good initiative and she is showing that she is a lioness.

    She should also act against:

    1. MCC has to issue notices and clear all shops in buildings which was supposed to be meant for parking.
    2. All encroachments should be erased out after due notice.
    3. Make MCC inspectors work and make them corrupt free. When Mayor inpects and finds that if these inspectors are not doing the job or are corrupt initiate action against them.

Mayor is doing a great job. She will have blessing of thousands of pedestrians by making them walk little bit hassle free. As many opinioned growing city like Mangalore without proper direction needs few multi story car parks with proper city bus stops so that commuters can park their vehicle and do their chorus stress free. But people should have will to walk few steps. We do observe that most young and middle age people fit enough to walk love to park at their point and refusing to walk few steps! Luxury of modern life??
We teach culture and vocal about foreign culture imitation....why not emulate bicycle culture like Netherlands???Whynot support such wonderful road cleaning drive?

Mayor is doing the work of the Police department. Our Mangalore Police comissionarate is turning a blind eye to all the traffic problems within its jurisdiction. It's high time for the Commissioner and his deputies to go round the city to see the mess everywhere and specially how their police force controlling the flow of traffic. It's most distressing to see police constables posted at the junctions/circles instead of clearing the traffic jams, busy talking over their mobile. We never see two or three star officers on the road managing or guiding traffic flow of traffic in emergencies also.
Kudos to Mayor for good work.

Why Mayor only. Let the other responsible Officers/officials /corporators concerned make Padayathra to certain localies where such irregularities illegal activities are noticed and also let them verify the road condition etc. and take similar kind of action so that our City really become like a smart City.

The Mayor post is only for one year and in a few months from now she will vacate office. Encroachment of footpaths and illegal parking and hoardings will continue after she vacates office but she will boast that I got poor vendors evicted from footpaths etc etc. Let she take the credit. Has any mayor at the time of occupying office have thought of two things 1. Plastic Nuisance and mess continuing in this smart city. 2. A good and hygiene market for people to sell their products. When will they start thinking of these two things at Hampankatta and bring a solution to this serious problem going on for years together. The State Bank - Central Market is so dirty that it is the most Unhygienic, filthy place and malaria/dengue and chikangunya prone area.

Poverty should not be the reason for encroaching public land and running business without proper licence. The effective way of clearing the illegal shops by passing city ordinance making it illegal to patronize the roadside illegal shops imposing fine on customers. Customers can also be prosecuted for abatement of offence. Merchants/vendors are required to display their licence so that it is visible to all the customers. BTW, the Mayor is doing the right thing.

Good Job ! Please also make a note of haphazard parking near Unity (from United Motors Pump upto Unity Hospital. Also near Athena Hospital, almost entire Mother Theresa Road. Everyday Congestion - what is Traffic Police doing. Also Vehicles taking a U-Turn before clock tower circle under the nose of the Police inspite of two No U-Turn signs being put up there. Autos on Milagres Cross Road ride downwards on the one-way. Vehicles coming upwards on the One Way road from Jail to MG Road (past Ibrose complex). Traffic Police are concentrating on catching Two Wheeler Riders instead of erring Buses and other 4-Wheelers who drive so menacingly. Make our roads safe by instilling Discipline of the Strictest Order. Dont overlook errant Drivers.

hats off to Kavitha madam. Really appreciated. It's irrespective of the party I am appreciating. That's we always keep saying. you do good work, helping public. They will really recognize and appreciate.
Street vendors , we all know. they don't want to pay any tax and want to continue their business on the streets , irrespective whether they grab the parking place, whether they grab the footpath... nothing they bother. they don't have common sense that if they are not given any space by MCC ( even though madam claims they all are given places to do business ) , even if it's not given, they don't have any right to occupy the foot path or some parking places... how stupid is that. Ask and fight back for the business place. any ways, well done madam. keep doing such raids and rounds in and around Mangalore. We will ensure you are taken care with a long journey being Mangalore Mayor.

It is good to see that Mayor Kavita Sanil has taken her job very seriously. Good to see that she has enlisted the cooperation of the Police Department too. Indeed the department of crime and traffic are doing their best in any case. The menace today is reckless driving by rickshaw drivers and drivers of two wheelers apart from the buses parking their vehicles at non-designated bus halts. The Police despite their best efforts are finding it difficult to cope with their jobs because of shortage of hands.

It is expedient that mayor directs her attention to the areas mentioned above.

My humble request please look into the roads and get it cleared. Do Visit Kadri kambla road and find a solution for the blocking of road. Newly constructed road and bridge renovation work going on.. focus on infrastructure first . Publicity do happen if u focus on road ...question on big contractor Rather then making suffer ppl who struggle for daily bread .. it's easy to Target common traders.. honestly speaking never had problems with roads from pvs to bunts hostel circle. Best way to solve traffic is to have strict instructions to private bus who always block road. Take action on this.

It is very appreciative that the present Mayor Kavita Sanil is going hammer and tongs at all that is illegal,be it skill games , illegal parking, footpath vendors etc, etc. My simple take in this matter is that this kind of exercise has been taken by other Mayors too though not with so much interest and enthusiasm.Hats off to her . What happens after her term is over . Don't we see all back with their original business. How does the MCC allow everyone to break laws in the first place? Why is there no periodical checks carried out on regular basis. Do we need to spend this precious time of the Mayor and the Police Officials to rectify all of this blatant violations which comes back to a naught after some time . Unless all this violators are heavily fined and a data is maintained of such violations nothing will change.

initiative by mayor Kavia Sanil. But,First plan legal multi storey parking near all commercial area, market ,Banks,Hospital and Schools and colleges. Some of the schools and colleges have broken the law and constructed buildings on the road without any space for even bus drops.(bad illegal planning). While planning see that Mangaluru is going to be smart city.

    The move is good.
But when will the Mayor stop illegal autorickshaw and taxi parks forcibly implemented by these unions. Some junctions are filled with rickshaw lines on all four sides of the junctions that too, without any limit for n umber of such rickshaws. Milagres lane for example is forcibly taken by autorickshaws along full length. Who gave them the right to use public property.
In Mumbai for example, the space is allocated for not more than 5 autorickshaws at a time. That too they have to pay extra tax for this to become member.
Everywhere, the parking places are taken by three wheelers, and tempos forcibly. What is the corporation doing about this? Are they afraid of them?

You are absolutely right. Mayor Kavita Sanil is fighting for a good cause for the welfare of the pedestrians and the people who are facing a lot of problem due to illegal parking and illegal hawkers. I also understand that motorist who do not find a legal parking spot, have no choice but park on the pavements ( side walks ). The city should build some multi storied parking lot for which the motorists should pay for it. This is common in many countries. This should be done on a priority basis.
