Smriti Irani gets I&B portfolio, urban development for Tomar

New Delhi, Jul 18 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday gave the Information and Broadcasting portfolio to Smriti Irani, a day after M. Venkaiah Naidu, who was handling the Ministry, was picked to be the NDA's Vice Presidential candidate.

The Urban Development Ministry, which was also being handled by Naidu, has been given to Narendra Singh Tomar.

"M. Venkaiah Naidu has resigned from his ministerial responsibilities. The additional charge of the Ministry of I&B has been given to Smriti Irani," Modi tweeted.

"Additional charge of Moud_India (Ministry of Urban Development) has been given to Tomar," he said.

Irani already heads the Textile Ministry, while Tomar is in charge of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj.

Presently, as per Section 125(A) of the Representation of People Act, 1951, furnishing of false information by a candidate in his poll affidavit is an offence punishable with a prison sentence of six months or with fine, which hardly serves as a deterrent.
Elections are the basis of any democracy and hence it is needed that they are being conducted in free and fair manner. To do this, system of affidavit was brought in through political reforms but its ineffective implementation has reduced its effectiveness,as:-
1)Electoral Candidates are not disclosing their asset and income in free and fair manner.
2)some candidates are filing fake details like education degrees
3)Also their is no mechanism to cross check these details whether they are correct of not.
As Elections are breeding ground of all ills weather it is criminalisation of politics or Politician-Businessmen nexus,by bringing in effective affidavit system we can greatly reduce them, further it will give way to transparency in electoral system in which citizens can take informed decision by knowing details of their candidates.
Last week Madhya Pradesh minister Narottam Mishra has been disqualified as a legislator for using paid news in his election campaign and not furnishing proper accounts of poll expenses. Election Commission’s order disqualifying him from holding the post and and being an MLA for violations related to paid news and non-furnishing of proper election expenditure. He continue attend assembly session even debarred for 3 years. Union minister Irani who has presented conflicting education qualifications know honoured the addition incharge
In a democratic setup, it is important the law breakers should not have the power to make laws as cited by Dr. Rajendra Prasad.BJP which promised 'minimum government, maximum governance' is honoring them with ministry. The party one way projecting non-BJP states as 'Jungle Raj'.But in practice it breeds its own elected members for corrupt democratic practice.

Just like Human Resources and textiles the I&B also will get messed up. Henceforth all film makers make have to report to the RSS head quarters in Nagpur to get clearances and certifications for their movies.

I hope she does not mess up the way she did when she was the Education Minister. She left an extremely bad taste in the mouth by messing up whatever she took up. Anyway time alone will tell if she can turn over a new leaf. First of all she should learn to shed her overbearing attitude. She should realise that she, like all other politicians, is the people's servant.
