Once again, Mangaluru tops nation in quality of life, ranked 7th globally

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 7: How far a city is inhabitable is decided by the standard of living people enjoy there. There have often been discussions about how far a city or town provides comfort, affordability and level of amenities. People keep fighting on for the cities close to their hearts. Many who have spent their lives in Mumbai vouch for the city's qualities. At the same time, those who have never stayed there might shudder at the thought of rush there.

Even as people continue to argue in favour of Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chandigarh etc based on their respective experiences and perceptions, a city from Karnataka has silently overtaken others and found spot at the top of the rankings as per a study. This is as per study conducted by data provider, Numbeo. In its recent report, Numbeo has given index level 185.12 for the city. With this ranking, Mangaluru is ranked alongside cities like London, New York and Paris. Among 189 cities listed in the world, the city has been given seventh position.

Out of five cities ranked as best in the country in terms of standard of living, four are located in South India. Bengaluru finds itself at 131st spot with index of 115.52, Hyderabad is at 129th place with 117.30 and Coimbatore with 113.66 has been given No. 134 ranking. Hyderabad has been ranked third best city in the country with Bengaluru and Coimbatore following it closely. Pune with 121.55 index points has got second rank in the city behind Mangaluru.

Capital city of New Zealand, Wellington, has been given first rank globally in this list with 208.63 points. It is closely followed by Canberra (Australia) with 203.52 points. Points are allotted on the basis of purchase power, pollution level, property of assets as compared to income, safety, health protection, climate, time needed to travel between different places etc. In all these pointers the city has got high marks as compared to other cities.

Mangaluru, which in an earlier ranking by the same agency had ranked 12th globally in healthcare, is now ranked 9th best in the world, with an index of 82.04. It is calculated based on an estimation of the overall quality of the healthcare system, healthcare professionals, equipment, staff, doctors, cost, etc.

As far as safety aspect is considered, Mangaluru has got highest marks among 189 cities with 76.64 in the country and 22nd globally. Hyderabad, which is placed second in this aspect in the country, is at 77th spot in the world. Gurgaon and New Delhi are at the bottom of the list of unsafe cities in the country. Abu Dhabi with 88.46 points has been considered the most safe city globally.

As far as pollution is considered, the city has emerged as the least polluted city in the country and 25th globally. As far as travel time is considered, the city has again topped the nation although in the world it has ben placed at No. 70. Kolkata with 68.88 points is considered to be having the worst transport system globally.

Have lived in UK for over a decade and visited several European and other countries.. To place Mangalore above them is nothing but rubbish.. Ofcourse will be delighted if truly our Kudla could compete among the top cities in the world.. However unfortunately just now we are million miles away from reaching that milestone... Mr.Numbeo you need to get your facts right and not publish any nonsense.. Anyway hopefully being short listed for smart city project we are a step closer to achieving that big dream of all Mangalurians... We do have all the resources required to achieve that fame, but require a strong political will and cooperation from all citizens... Long live our Kudla..

With humility, I want to state here that I visited the cities of England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Vatican. I also lived in Canada for 6 months.

    What I noticed there:
Plastic and trash is rarely seen on roads or roadsides.
Uninterrupted electricity and water supply 24 hours.
The water available on tap at home, hotel or roadside is good for drinking throughout Europe and Canada.
No open sewerage and all rivers are very clean.
People on road or anywhere are very disciplined.
People taking dog out, carry a plastic bag.

Why do you think Mangalore is a piece of chalk infront of those cheese.
I'm from Mangalore and I take pride in it. But, I don't take pride in the foolishness of the people that reside there!
Mangalore was beautiful before, it was something I'd show to people if they asked me to describe paradise. It would have been number 1 surely, if they had planned the city better, got rid of their chalta hai attitude and kicked out all saffron, green whatever it is, hate mongers from there.
Life isn't this, being caged in fancy appartments and hanging out in malls. Man, I'd give up a Rolls Royce here and choose to walk by the fields in Mangalore. Smell of the rain, sun on your cheeks at the beach and the wind in your hair as you zoom across town in your old RX!

Mangalore is great place spoiled by us Mangaloreans only. Even abroad, I try to avoid our own ooru da akulu. Endless showing off. A very few people with basic courtesy.

Those may be cheese, but it's from hybrid cows. This isn't chalk, this is pure butter from natural cow's milk! If you'd want to put it that way.

End of the day, if you'd ask me where on Earth I dream to be, it's Namma Kudla!

Mangalore is not managed by politicians belonging to Congress and BJP but it is managed through quality education and hospitality that brings civic sense to the city. Your BD VHP and RSS are a party of goondas who instill fear among people and mangaloreans care a damn about it. Mangaloreans are intelligent enough to crush hate people like BD, VHP and RSS etc. BD attacked churches in 2008 when BJP came to power and now look at their state a saying in Hindi Nah Ghar Nah Ghat. You people only spread hate.

It is in-spite of all the anti social elements that Mangalore is still the top city in India. There might be still nice towns and villages where quality of life is excellent, but this ranking is only for cities. The fresh breeze from the Arabian sea washes all the dust and pollution in the city. The nice and friendly people of Mangalore are the reason there is excellence in the fields of medicine, education, banking, industries and fishing. The goonda raj of the Anti-social elements is a threat and the reason why Mangalore doesnt have an even higher ranking. And the successive Governments apathy towards the welfare of Mangalore and Udupi, be it in the tourism sector or environment conservation is the reason why it is not a world class city. Mangalore is what it is because of its people and the people that love to be in Mangalore, and not because of anything else.

The credit goes to each one, from children, youth to the eldest and the oldest. It is not one days and one person's achievement. The hard work rendered by each one from years & years together has gathered this quality of life in Mangaluru.
We can make our living much more better. Even it can be the best if we give little more concern to one another.
    - Follow the rules
    - Do not be greedy in everything
    - Honest in one's attitude and work (Work is worship)
    - Treat other as god or guest or relative or lover etc. etc.
When "I" do it to the other then it will be surely returned by the other who is another "I". No 'I problem' to grab but 'We concern' to give. By giving we receive. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us

Generally people compare the infrastructure. But please note points are allotted on the basis of purchase power, pollution level, property of assets as compared to income, safety, health protection, climate, time needed to travel between different places etc. It does not consider how our bus stop looks like, roads, footpaths, open drainage etc. Still it is a proud article to share and let us all be happy about it. If you look at all the above points we can conclude that it is mainly due to private individuals or natural atmosphere are the reasons to this and nothing to do with Govt works.
