Modi denounces killings in the name of cows

Ahmedabad, Jun 29 (IANS): Breaking his silence on cow vigilantes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday made it clear that killing people in the name of "gau bhakti" was unacceptable.

Addressing a gathering at the Sabarmati Ashram set up by Mahatma Gandhi here, Modi said: "As a society, there is no place for violence.

"Killing people in the name of 'gau bhakti' (cow worship) is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve."

Modi underlined that no one spoke about protecting cows more than Mahatma Gandhi and Acharya Vinoba Bhave.

"Yes, it should be done," he said. But "we are a land of non-violence. We are a land of Mahatma Gandhi. Why do we forget that?

"Today I want to say a few words and express sadness on some of the things going on," Modi added, in clear reference to the increasing cases of murderous attacks on people in the name of cow protection.

"Violence never has and never will solve any problem. No person in this nation has the right to take the law in his or her own hands.

"Let's us all work together. Let's create the India of Mahatma Gandhi's dremas. Let's create an India our freedom fighters will be proud of," Modi said.

The remarks by Modi, who arrived in Gujarat on Thursday on a two-day visit, assume significance in the wake of criticism that he and his government have maintained silence about the violence by cow vigilantes who have lynched people in various places.

The cow vigilantes claim to be acting to defend an animal which Hindus consider sacred.

Come on,, lets be fair. When there is a terror attack anywhere in the world with people dying , what do you do , Condemn , right? So PM here has strongly condemned. Will Pappu fly down to these areas to hold a dharna? Please do not do anything illegal. Its okay in Mlore where we have the Cong Govt appeasing a certain section.

On Day Modi Breaks Silence, Man Accused of Carrying Beef is Killed in Jharkhand. This is second such case in Jharkhand in the last three days.
In September last year, the BBC ran a word frequency analysis of Narendra Modi’s speeches, both as prime minister as well as a campaigner in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Pre-election, the most recurrent issues brought up by the prime minister were Gujarat, security, Congress, development, jobs, change, etc. After the election, issues such as foreign affairs, toilets, army, and the word “Modi” itself dominated. What was missing in both phases was the word "malnutrition".
It is difficult to overstate just how dire India’s nutrition problem is. In 2008, 43% of Indian children under the age of five were underweight. The corresponding figure for Somalia was 32% and for Rwanda it was 11%. Even Pakistan, seven decades after its simultaneous birth with India, has had greater success at this most basic of human rights only 32% of Pakistan’s children are underweight.
Ironically, Modi knows this remember, he blamed Gujarat’s terrible malnutrition figures on a vegetarian diet. Even so, he and his party went and banned the cheapest source of protein based on a religious taboo.
And it bears pointing out that beef is a mass food. Around 80 million Indians eat beef, a number which is larger than the population of France, Britain or Italy. Moreover, these beef eaters are some of the poorest, most socially disadvantaged people in the country, consisting mostly of Muslims and Dalits.
Convert every person in the crowd to a possible killer – this too is a project. Managing a crowd is quite easy. Nobody owns the crowd; on the contrary, the crowd owns a government everywhere. It has its own government, it has people supporting it.
with custodians of law and order turning mute spectators and “.. human slaughter in the name of the bovine” is becoming “tragically the new normal in India.

Even though the pseudo nationalist press controlled by the govt has tried to downplay yesterday's marches, these protests have gained both national and international attention. RSS too must be feeling jittery.

Why do you have state governments and whichever state any killing happens and that too of non-hindus, all hell will break loose, while there are many places hindus are killed and these news never come to surface and no one blames Modi for that. Hypocrites to the core. The moment, you all start seeing anyone being killed or targeted and raise voice and not selective voice when your reliigious people are targeted, India will rise. Blaming everything on modi will only show your narrow thinking. When CPI(M) kills scores of people in kerala as part of political vendetta, all keep quiet as no one dare to raise a voice, when it happens in UP before Yogi's rule, no one had any issue, scores of killings under mamata begum no one has any issue, you all do not even care about kashmiris at all. Pathetic

We are a country of one billion plus people and each day a few millions must be dying in our country. People die of sickness, old age, starvation, accidents, dacoity etc. Each day our uniformed personnel are risking their lives fighting terrorists in our bordering states and naxalites in many others. We have political activists dying irrespective of party affiliations. Political activists of every party get killed mainly in states like Kerala, Tamil Nada and West Bengal due to their internal rivalries. In Kerala people form the Congress, BJP and also the CPM have been killed due to rivalries.
However, the killings, lynchings and mob attacks on innocents mostly muslims and dalits on the suspicion of being beef eaters is a new phenomenon which has come into fore ever since this government came to power. Sadhvis and Sadhus who owe affiliations to the RSS and the sangh openly support these goons, make inflamatory statements in public and encourage them to continue indulging in these acts. No culprit has been brought to justice during the past 20 months for these mob attacks and they continue unabated. That is the problem and that is why the Prime Minister who promised acche din is being questioned and blamed. He has a brute majority and if he wants he can put an end to this nonsense within no time, but he does not seem to be interested and that is the problem.

His speech makes no sense at all. What does he mean by saying It is not acceptable? There is no assurance given here either to the victims and their families or to the millions living in fear of further attacks. Why has he not asked him Home Minister to send immediate messages to all the state administration that no future attacks will be tolerated and the local law and order machinery would be held fully responsible for any kind of mob violence or lynchings? Why has he not warned the goons and their instigators that immediate and stern action would be taken against them and they would be booked under strict laws like the Goonda act or the anti terrorism laws with no scope for bail? Why is he not assuring the nation that he would bring in strict laws against mob violence and lynchings with mandatory death sentences for those convicted?.
I saw a video of the Tamil Nadu police taking prompt action against these cow vigilantes and how these cowards were running for their lives. This proves that if the police are given strict instructions to uphold the law and given a free hand, none of these morons will dare come out into the streets.

Yes driving is not allowed for women which will be soon abolished once the crown prince takes charge hopefully. Our country being a largest democracy but, you have feeling that you are ruled by a dictatorship style govt. Tell me will you be able to walk freely in night? Will you allow your child, wife, sister, mother walk alone in the streets without fear? a big NO. Don't compare with the other without you house is in order.
