Moodbidri: Police raid illegal slaughterhouse at Handelu, rescue 19 cattle

Daijiworld Media Network - Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, Jun 22: Of late, there have been a number of cattle thefts, some of which were brazen, on account of which dairy farmers were losing their precious cattle to cattle traffickers. There had been some cases in which the families were threatened and animals were dragged away in their presence. The harassed farmers had pleaded with the police to come to their rescue as culprits always succeeded in escaping from getting caught.

Police personnel from the station in the town raided an illegal slaughterhouse at Handelu in the outskirts of the town on Wednesday June 21. They took into possession 19 cattle including a few calves and various equipment meant for slaughtering them from the spot.

Local police inspector, Ramachandra Nayak, and sub-inspectors, Dejappa and Shankar Nairy led the raid on the slaughterhouse which had been operational at Mundelu hillock behind Handelu mosque. Three persons who were looking after the slaughterhouse fled after coming to know of the raid. The accused who gave a slip to police personnel have been identified as Bavu Beary, Hameed, and Nissar. 12 cows, three male calves, three female calves, and a buffalo calf were found from the spot. Two machetes used for slaughtering cows, wooden block used for cutting meat, metal table used for storing the beef, tray, and clothes of the accused have been taken into custody by the police.

It is open secret that the thicket at Handelu Gudde hillock has been housing slaughterhouses since decades. When passing through this area, people are covered with apprehension and fear. Decomposed beef, bones of bovine animals and other waste dumped in a pit formed for the purpose at the spot has been a permanent feature of this area. People want to know whether it is really possible to clear Handelu of its bad reputation. It might be possible only if people's representatives join hands in this effort.

Shankar is right & Joseph is supporting thieves. During 90's there was no incidence of cattle theft. People were living happily. Only old cows were sold to slaughter house. But now a days thieves don't follow any procedures & people are even eating meat from dead cow. These thieves do not even leave fully pregnant cows. How these consumers believe that the meat they get is beef. Even I heard that a illegal slaughter house operating near karkala was raided & people found dog teeths & skins nearby.

    Dear Rathan, Mangalore,

Contradiction is in your mind. Make it clear.

Once upon a time there was plenty of cattle available for slaughter. Now many in the twin districts are working abroad and purchasing milk from outside. People have abandoned cattle because of no profit.

NOW THERE IS PROFIT IN CATTLE. ANYBODY CAN MAKE PROFIT OUT OF CATTLE.

ONLY IN THE TWIN DISTRICTS THESE COMMUNAL THUGS ARE RESTRICTING CATTLE AND DUE TO THIS CATTLE TRANSPORTATION IS SEVERED UNLIKE IN NORTH KARNATAKA THIS KIND OF HUE AND CRY IS NOT SEEN BECAUSE FARMERS ARE WILLING TO GIVE THEIR CATTLE TO SLAUGHTER HOUSES.

ALSO ONE SLAUGHTER TO D.K(S.K) DISTRICT IS NOT ENOUGH TO FEED THE MASS POPULATION OF MEAT CONSUMERS. THIS RESTRICTION OF PERMITS TO SLAUGHTER HOUSE SHOULD GO.

BURNOL BHAKTS DON'T PERCEIVE REALITY ON THE GROUND. THEY GO ONLY BEHIND CHAI, CHAI......

I find it hard to believe that the cows are stolen. I also have doubt on the plight of the farmers. Wouldn't it be possible that they have lodged a complaint with police on the instructions of right wing cow loving groups?

These are the points that make me skeptical of stolen cow claim,

    1. Where do these farmers house their cows?
    2. Do they have even a slightest provision for the security of their cows?
    3. I have hardly ever heard of cattle being returned to the farmers by police
    4. The whole agenda seems to be the plot to target a certain community to deal in beef trading business.
    5. Anecdotal evidence are reported as facts in case of cattle thefts.

Now before some fools accuse me of anything... i want to inform you people that I dont eat beef or beef products, I dont like cattle slaughter but, i am for it for purely for economic and environmental reason. Unlike some idiots who are against cow slaughter who dont have a cattle at home or those who have fed few blades of grass to a cattle at some temples,.. i for one actually own a dairy farm, so dont say that i am anti-farmer.

If anybody want to counter my argument, feel free do to so.

    2. Cow theifs don’t come with folded hand and beg.. they come with machete. Can a hapless farmer or his kids dare to question?
    3. It is not easy to file complaint. Farmer would rather give up fighting and look for other jobs
    4. Other day I narrated the incident where the theifs took away a calf, placing rs 25 on the compound, while the 3 terrified woman at home watched helplessly
    5. You say riding an 'illegal' slaughter house is like plot to target a certain community??? Well, what can I say here.

I know these incidents may not make sense for someone who love beef be it legal or stolen.. But you can certainly ponder over it.. pl enquire farmers around you and you will be enlightened..

    Rajesh,

You appear logical but failed to be practical!

    1. Cows are housed in sheds, not in bank locker dear.. what kind of security? Day night watchman? Can a poor farmer afford?
    - Dont you think that these poor farmers sell their cattle and later claim those to have stolen?

    2. Cow theifs don’t come with folded hand and beg.. they come with machete. Can a hapless farmer or his kids dare to question?
    - This is a sort of anecdotal evidence that i was talking about which is presented to make a theft case.

    3. It is not easy to file complaint. Farmer would rather give up fighting and look for other jobs
    - Really?? Thats just a stupid excuse.

    4. Other day I narrated the incident where the theifs took away a calf, placing rs 25 on the compound, while the 3 terrified woman at home watched helplessly
    - Another presentation of anecdotal evidence that i was talking about.

    5. You say riding an 'illegal' slaughter house is like plot to target a certain community??? Well, what can I say here.
    - Dont you think so??? If you are so worried about illegal slaughter house being operated why are there no reports of illegal slaughter houses for Goats, Sheep or Chicken?

I know these incidents may not make sense for someone who love beef be it legal or stolen.. But you can certainly ponder over it.. pl enquire farmers around you and you will be enlightened..
    - For your information, I myself have investment in Dairy farm. Dont give me stupid excuse of plight of a poor farmer. I find it hard to believe that a farmer can feed a cattle now a days. One cannot have one or two cow and make a living out of it. Economics of scale is required to make it profitable to own cattle.

Just wait and watch, people like you keep supporting cow slaughter ban and that will drive the milk prices up. Further banning cattle slaughter will lead to its extinction because if a farmer cant sell his cattle after its purpose has been served.... he will replace it with buffaloes.

    1. Where do these farmers house their cows?
-You are a dairy farmer. Where do you house your cows?
Not too long ago every house in south canara had a 'kottige' the outhouse for cattle. Even now, the
    farmers have those.
    2. Do they have even a slightest provision for the security of their cows?
-There was no menace of these unemployed youth from one community earlier. No one used to
steal cows. Cows were safe even when left in the open for grazing.
    3. I have hardly ever heard of cattle being returned to the farmers by police
-Check with the police stations. They do return. If the owner is not found, the cattle are sent to
    goshaalas run by some mutts.
    4. The whole agenda seems to be the plot to target a certain community to deal in beef trading
    business.
-Why you have left a blind eye to the 'illegal slaughterhouse' mentioned in this news article? Do
you intend to say that right wing Hindu groups built an illegal slaughterhouse next to a mosque
    to frame innocent Muslims there?
    5. Anecdotal evidence are reported as facts in case of cattle thefts.
-Cattle can not speak. So the evidence might be unreliable for you.

    Sir,
You have to understand that the main tensions regarding the beef issue is cattle theft (as far as South canara is concerned). We had Muslims and Christians eating beef from ages without any problems. Now, when some people started to make easy money by stealing cows from the cattle sheds, swinging swords, people started to hate not only the cow thieves, but also the people who eat that meat from the stolen cows.

Let Muslim leaders issue a fatwa to buy beef only from legal slaughterhouses. Let the government establish more slaughterhouses. Let the cattle be sold legally. There will be peace everywhere.

    Dear The Guru, Mangalore
What is your full name and why are you scared to furnish your correct name. (ಇದು ಸುಮ್ಮಗೆ ತಮಾಶೆಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲ.)

My fridge is fully operational because of Siddharamaiah's relentless power supply.

SIDDHARAMAIAH'S BHAGYA IS GOOD FOR FARMERS AS WELL AS TO THE CITIZENS.

Its my freedom to provide my full name or not in social forum, however I can state that my name is Guru

Ya I saw how much power is given in Puttur a week back... When it rains then no power and during summer 8 hour power cut on a daily basis.. Good that your fridge is operational...

Somavara Santhe which happens during summer with full of pomp earlier is loosing its charm due to frequent power cuts nowadays

    Dear The Guru, Mangalore,
Daijiworld disclaimer clearly says to specify your correct name.

Secondly, are you jealous of getting relentless power to us. In Gujarat and in Madhya Pradesh power is like minpuri. Low power.

Well said. Most people think that making everything legal will stop illegal things. But people hell bent upon doing illegal things will continue to do so regardless of the law of the land.

Catch hold of the kingpin & associates, put them behind bar for life as they are spoiling the livelihood of innocent people. This is one of the reasons for communal clashes taking place because of the wrong doings from one particular community members.

Now Muslim community should understand that whatever beef they were getting at lowest cost so far is of all stolen animals and were illegally processed. If police do their job sincerely they can find more such places.

Actually minority commentators here describe cow meat as cheapest one... I was wondering how that could be possible.
Legal beef cannot be cheap...that's what my understanding...

Simple fact that this slaughterhouse is situated next to a mosque, clearly exposes the hypocrisy of the community in general. They say that Muslim youth are not involved in cow theft, illegal cattle transport and illegal slaughtering. What is this then?

    Same logic for cattle thieves..
