Udupi, Jun 7: Brahmavar police, in a novel initiative, constructed recharging unit for a defunct borewell within five days. The unit was inaugurated at 4.30 pm on Monday June 5.

The dry borewell is located near the police station at Brahmavar. With the interest taken by police sub-inspector of Brahmavar, Madhu T S, the work of building recharging unit was undertaken under the guidance of expert in the subject and resource person, Joseph G M Rebello, and completed within five days.

The unit was inaugurated by deputy superintendent of police, Kumaraswamy. Police personnel, Bharath Kumar, was the convener. Joseph G M Rebello, state level resource person and information expert, functioned as resource person. Brahmavar police circle inspector, Srikant, was present.

All the staff of Brahmavar police station, vice president of Chantar gram panchayat, Dinesh, president of Varamballi gram panchayat, Nityanand, office bearers of Vruksha Raksha Abhiyan, Rotary Club Saibrakatte, Giant Group of Brahmavar and local environmentalists were present.

Madhu welcomed the gathering. Joseph G M Rebello, in his introductory address, spoke about the importance of percolation of rain water failing which he warned that the coastal districts may face acute water shortage in future.

Kumaraswamy, after inaugurating the unit, advised the staff of his department to take cue from Brahmavar police station staff and evince interest in protection of environment, in addition to discharging their professional duties. He wished that this dry borewell will generate abundant water in the coming years.

Everyone present then planted over 60 saplings in the compound of the police station with the support of local institutions and organizations. Varamballai gram panchayat president, Nityanand, proposed vote of thanks.
