Bengaluru ranked India's top green city in Amazon survey

Bengaluru, Jun 5 (IANS): Bengaluru has been ranked as the top green city and environmentally responsible city owing to the spike in demand for solar as well as garden products, a survey has showed.

The survey, led by retail giant Amazon.in, found the demand for solar power products such as solar lights, inverters, power banks and torches, grew nearly 400 per cent year-on-year with over 55 per cent of the demand coming in from the tier-II and tier-III cities.

Increased demand has also been witnessed from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune.

Further, the demand for garden products such as seeds, plants, garden tools, pots and planters, also witnessed a growth of nearly 300 per cent year on year, with tier-II and tier-III cities contributing to over 55 per cent to the demand.

"Customers today are more environment-conscious and recognise the importance of using clean energy. We are excited by the rising demand for solar and garden products across the country," Kaveesh Chawla, Director (Category Management), Amazon India, said in a statement on Monday.

Increased awareness and consciousness about the urgent need to reduce our carbon footprint is becoming an important factor driving this demand surge, the survey noted.

While solar lamps and lanterns are the top selling products with over 60 per cent demand in the solar power category, seeds and fertilisers are the top selling products in the Garden category, with over four times growth year-on-year, followed by plant containers and watering equipment that have seen three times growth over the last year.

New concepts like hydroponics, organic gardening, home composting, air purifying plants and drip irrigation are also witnessing an uptake among customers across the country, the survey revealed.

    @ Leslie,

Water table is going down due to concrete jungles in BL.
Very soon BL will become desert as per report in BBC this week.

This a poorly planned ghetto, in my opinion.

I have sold all my real estate in BL, which admired so much once upon a time!!

Good, hope this survey is accurate, lot of trees are cut down near whitefield for Metro Rail. Sad to see that. Hope they continue to get the top rank. The government should take initiative to plant more saplings and continue to keep up the name given as " Green city ".
