Arrested BJP leaders, activists presented in Kolkata court

Kolkata, May 26 (IANS): BJP national General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, the party's West Bengal unit chief Dilip Ghosh and Rajya Sabha member Rupa Ganguly, among others, were presented before a city court on Friday, a day after the party activists clashed with the police here during a protest march.

They were taken to Bankshall Court, along with over a hundred BJP activists.

Around 141 people, including prominent BJP leaders, were arrested on Thursday during a protest march that turned parts of the city hub into war zones, and left over 50 BJP workers and 21 police personnel injured.

One police vehicle was torched, and a number of government and private cars were damaged in the violence.

While the BJP claimed 200 of its workers were injured and accused the police of "unprovoked attacks" by roping in state's ruling Trinamool Congress cadres, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rejected allegations of police excesses. Instead, she accused the BJP of unleashing violence.
