Mangaluru: Seven years since air crash tragedy - Tributes paid to victims at memorial

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, May 22: Marking the seven anniversary of the horrific air crash at Mangaluru airport in 2010, families of the crash victims, the district administration and others paid solemn and emotional tributes to those who lost their lives in tragedy that left 158 dead.

Tributes were paid to the victims of the crash at the memorial park near Tannirbavi beach here on Monday May 22, exactly seven years since the crash.

Addressing the gathering after paying his tributes, district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai said, "The tragedy snatched away the lives of 158 people who were eager to join their families back home. We have a duty to pay tributes to them. Even though it is hard to get over the tragedy, ultimately we need to make peace and adjust as time goes on."

Helen Menezes, widow of Melwin Menezes who died in the crash recalled how her husband had initially planned to visit Mangaluru from Dubai two days earlier, but was not able to get ticket, and had finally flown by the ill-fated Air India Express flight X-812. "I was depressed and it took me several months to recover from the tragedy, but I had to be strong for my children. I pursued B Ed from Pune Open University and began teaching," she said. Her daughter, who was only 22 months at the time, was also present at the ceremony.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, deputy commissioner Dr K G Jagadeesha, ADC
Kumar, Mangaluru City Corporation mayor Kavita Sanil, MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, airport director V V Rao, and others were present.

What are these politicians doing here? Or are they expecting the deceased to get up and vote for them in the next elections?
One of the readers, Milan Lucerne, complains that Air India has no class. Agreed, it may not be the top rated airline in the world but let him just travel by some other foreign airlines and I am sure he will change his mind after that. Air India is head and shoulders above some countries' airlines. Any day it is much better than some other foreign airlines. Accidents do occur to any airline and even while walking on the road, some vehicle could come and hit you. You just can't avoid that. Similarly, so many mishaps involving foreign airlines have also taken place. It is wrong to infer that they have no class. Air India's service has improved by leaps and bounds. Last month, I travelled by Air India to the U.S.A. and was pleasantly surprised to see each and every flight take off dot on time.

I have noticed several times when I used to fly in AIE that they sink the aircraft more than others while landing. This might be to save the fuel or to reduce landing time, but this needs bigger runway because if landing distance is reduced it might become complicated in emergency situations whether to go around or to land with the pilots not in a situation to decide due to fatigue as I believe budget airline pilots fly more as they fly the aircraft more to make it sustainable. I hope that they put the newer aircraft for table top runway airports like Mangalore.

There is no need to extend the runway . Pilots should be careful . There are many table top airports in the world even smaller also. Now air india express lands safely in Mangalore. Now they learned their mistake. R.I.P. to all who lost their life.

    Oswald,
Commander of the ill-fated flight was a foreigner & was drunk.
His deputy shouted at him to abort the landing & takeoff.
Commander showed his pride & landed the aircraft.
    Rest is History.
Be grateful none of your family was on that flight.
When somebody talks from experience please be modest & listen.

    Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai,
I fully agree with you. Even now the landings in Mangaluru airport is scary. We feel safe only after the plane has come to a standstill.

The best tribute is to pay the victims kin the entire compensation which is their right. It only happens in India where such delays occur.

thanks, city still remember the incidents, but so far no justice to the victims family. Montreal Convention Law is in the waste box. Lack of aviation expert lawyers and judges is the main draw back to airlines. Air line fully recovered Air Crafts HULL insurance and not ready to comply Montreal Convention act for compensation.

hello politicians please stick to your 7 years old commitments of extending runway to avoid such accidents Immediately after the event every one spoke about extending the runway by another 1 KM though Airport authority and central government is ready with blue print state govt. still not acquired the land Daijiworld wrote few articles to remind about it So state leadership work on providing land for the important and urgent project so that such incidents don't occur again Just condolence meeting and words will not help solving the problem

I hope you know the difference between Air India and Air india express that is a budget airline. Also not it was not the mistake of the carrier , it was a pilots error. Air India is also top class, if you have flown.

Tribute is not sufficient by people’s representatives or government’s, it’s their responsibilities to ensure all the relatives of the victims got the sufficient compensation to lead their life comfortably and securely. Human lives are not compensated with any benefits but make life easier to the people who lost their loved ones.

Yes, seven year tragic incident is well remembered. A whisper of prayer is offered to all the victims of the tragedy and all their beloved families who must be remembering the sad memories so vividly. We were in the high seas of the Pacific Ocean sailing in deep waters when we saw on the CNN screen the tragic incident that just had occurred in Mangalore. The names of many passengers were heard and so also many of the local News broadcasts were seen.

Since then we have visited Mangalore at least six times and have passed thru the sad site where the tragedy occurred. May all the vicrtims rest in peace.
