Udupi, May 4: Thieves entered two houses located at Kediyoor Amblpady here on the night of Wednesday May 3 and took away ornaments and cash they could lay their hands on. The heist is estimated to be in the order of around Rs 10 lac.

Though the initial value of the stolen ornaments and cash was put at Rs 50 lac, the official complaint filed later in the police station stated the amount as Rs 10 lac.

The building in question named 'Amardeep' is owned by Diwakar Poojary, an NRI working in the Gulf region. While the house in the ground floor is rented out, the first floor house is occupied by the owner's family. Poojary's house was locked since the last over three months, as his family was on a long visit to his place of work, Qatar. Damodar Rao couple, to whom the ground floor house has been rented, also was away since the last two months. It is said that they are in Mangaluru for treatment in a hospital.

The thieves are believed to have taken away ornaments worth about Rs 10 lac from Poojary's home. Rs 15,000 in cash and Rs 5,000 worth of gold ornaments were stolen from the house of Rao. Doors of both these houses were opened by the thieves by breaking the locks, it is reported.

Rao's daughter is learnt to have visited the home of her parents here a week back and found that everything was normal. The theft came to light after Diwakar Poojary returned home on Thursday May 4 morning. Thereafter, complaint was filed in the town police station.

In addition to police personnel from town station, deputy superintendent of police, Kumaraswamy and district additional superintendent of police, Vishnuvardhan, visited the spot and guided the investigation. Sniffer dogs are expected to arrive soon.
