Turkish lira up 3% against US dollar after referendum


Ankara, April 17 (IANS): The Turkish currency lira reached its peak against the US dollar after the country's referendum on constitutional changes with a victory for the "Yes" camp.

The lira strengthened more than 3.5 per cent in Asian trade on Sunday, from 3.74 to 3.63 against the greenback, Xinhua news agency reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim declared victory for the "Yes" camp in the referendum for constitutional amendments that will change the governing system of Turkey from parliamentary to presidential system.

With 99 per cent of votes counted, 51.35 per cent backed the changes, compared to 48.65 per cent for the "No" side.

More than 86 per cent of 55 million Turkish electorates, including 1.3 million voters abroad, cast vote on Sunday.
