Salvation Run: Archbishop Moras walks 3 km with 1,600 Christians

Fr Adolf Washington

Bengaluru, Apr 10: As many as 1,600 Christians from 13 Christian denominations clad in t-shirts marked 'I belong to Christ' joined a 5 and 3 kilometer marathon in the southern city of Bengaluru April 8. A couple with their 7-month child in a pram also caught the attention of the organizers and participants. Several participants were seen excitedly taking 'selfies' and photographs against the many hoardings at the venue.

The inter-denominational event with a focus on 'sports, discipline and the Christian life' is the first of its kind in the country.

Soccer player Nihal Colaco (21) and badminton player Shalini Jugya (22) also preparing for India's top civil service examinations (Indian Administrative Service) joined Archbishop Moras as 'ambassadors' of the Salvation Run in flagging-of the Marathon 2017. Olympian hockey player Jude Felix and Athlete Kenneth Powell and film-choreographer Danny joined the marathon to boost the spirits of participants by their presence and participation.

The marathon was flagged-off at 6.32 am by Archbishop Bernard Moras at St Francis Xaviers Cathedral in the presence of Rev PK Samuel Bishop KCD CSI (Karnataka Central Diocese, Church of South India), Franciscan (OFM) minister provincial Fr Praveen Henry D'Souza, Rev Jesu Prasad Believers Church, Rev Shyam P Thomas Vicar Marthoma Church, Rev Samson, Karnataka Baptist Convention, Rev Samuel Rajkumar, Lutheran Church, pastor Harry Pereira, Pentecostal Church and religious leaders from the Assemblies of God. Former Bengaluru city police commissioner and former member of Parliament H T Sangliana took the 3 km marathon route.

Archbishop Moras who heads more than 4 million Catholics in the southern Indian city, before beginning a 3 km walk, at the launch in a brief but motivational speech said, "Youth are the pillars of the Church. Give top priority to your faith-life and you will see how God leads you. Remain close to Christ and become witnesses to that Faith wherever you are. Your life of Faith and discipline will bring many people closer to Christ”. The Prelate emphasized on reflecting on the price Christ has paid for our Salvation. While 90 percent of the participants were youth, there were also participants even 70 years old.

Along the marathon, 65-year old Selvanathan told Matters India correspondent (who also joined the Marathon), "It feels great to be part of this Marathon. I have never been in a marathon before. My son urged me to join in. I feel young."

The run is the brainchild of Elvis Joseph, a former state athlete and sports management professional who wants leaders of all denominations to endorse and engage in a faith-motivated sports and healthy lifestyle. This in turn he says "will create a thrill of competition, the sense of community and fellowship". "I was taken by surprise when we had about 1000 online registrations and 1600 turned up. We feel it is God's purpose. I feel thrilled and I hope young people realize that if they want to face the storms of life, thye need to be firmly founded on Christ and His word. Nothing else matters, this the concept behind the Salvation Run," Elvis told Matters India.

Elvis is scheduling plans to take the Salvation Run to other cities in India and make it an annual feature that will "bring all Christians together with a sense of serious commitment to live the Christian discipline".

Elvis, a Catholic, holds with conviction "Sports activities help people express their emotions and foster integrity, character and values in them. People will understand and respect one another and protect environment. A sporting culture brings hope to children, youth and the community at large."

The 1600 participants received medals (their participation certifications accessible online) as they entered the finishing line at the Cathedral. Participants were enthralled by 'Drummers India Group' a group of drummers from Africa headed by drummer Shyam when they were encouraged to use the scores of drums and 'bonjos' made available to them.

As a Catholic Runner, it was a great blessing and privilege to run with so many Christians united in Christ in the first ever Salvation Run, led by our Archbishop. Took part with my family, fellow parishioners and parish clergy. Was great to see even the bystanders on the way acknowledging us as Christians. Wonderful effort by Fr Adolf, Elvis and team. Hope that this run is the start of many more events like this, where we can be visible united witnesses of Christ.

Prophet Zechariah did prophecy in BC 520 about the coming of a king who will rule the world.
" Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king come to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. ...........HE WILL PROCLAIM PEACE TO THE NATIONS. HIS RULE WILL EXTEND FROM SEA TO SEA AND FROM THE RIVER TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH. 2.3 billion people are in the list, as the largest religion of the world started with a dozen very ordinary people 2000 years back- the high percentage out of them were engaged in the fishing business. Kings ride on the horse and chariots, but the savior of the world rode on a colt. The King of peace is getting citizens to His kingdom every day, and some of them suffer a lot of pain to join the kingdom of the King of peace. All other kings are inside the grave but the grave of the King of Peace is empty. Is He unique? Let us all march for Him.

What a great birthday gift it was for me to see the picture of the believers exalting the name of JESUS through a united front of various denominations. The virgin born-miracle working-risen savior is the only hope left for the whole world. Let this march be the beginning of marches all across India at this time when anti-Christian spirit is emerging in some corners of India. God's special blessings be upon this new venture of faith and the proclamation of the risen saviour of the world.

The SALVATION RUN was one of the finest Christian initiatives in the field of well being and sports with the idea of unity among good human beings for the better of the country. Everything was well arranged and the entire crowd seemed tuned for the peaceful objective. Credit should go to Elvis Joseph and his team for organising this unique gathering. The medals given to all those who walked the 3km distance and ran the 5km race were superb and a definite memento. These kind of activities should be held all over the country by our people to prove that we are a fun loving community at all times. Congrats.

Very good to see the event '' All christian denomination united for greater glory of God'' it is very good to see all christian's coming together to display their love for Jesus , as Jesus as indicated that if you acknowledge me I will acknowledge you. For most of us it is a matter of great pride when christian of any denomination succeed in any sphere of life , even though there are doctrinal differences we are all united in the body of Christ . It is good to see so many of us proudly displaying our ownership with Christ . If this was announced in parishes and churches may be we would have at least 10000 plus people participating , but still hats off to all of you who were privileged to participate in this great event , let these events take place every year with greater participation . We are a very privileged class ,as our Lord is Jesus Christ ,the way truth and life. Congratulations to all the heads of denomination and participation and the enthusiastic Fr. Adolf.

Great. The enthusiasm of Very Rev Bornad Moras, Arch Bishop of Bangalore deserves greater appreciation. He is 75 plus . He has lot of tension of some linguistic groups in different churches creating Problems every next day, with so much administrative responsibility of the diocese is doing wonderful service . It is no less then a miracle He is doing so much work, only with the inspiration of the Holy spirit and We are happy we were Blessed with a man with so much of dedication. You write to him a simple mail on some important issue of the church and with in a week You will get a reply. This an exceptionally quality of discipline you find in him I take this opportunity to thank him whole Heartedly for his ideal leadership to the Church of Bangalore. May God Bless him and Keep him.
