Udupi: Youngsters follow religious traditions - dispose off abandoned pictures of gods

Udupi, Mar 30: We often come across people trying to infuriate others through sacrilegious comments about gods, statements which ruffle religious sentiments, and also by using of pictures of gods or god-men in cartoons etc. Contrary to these, where the main aim of the perpetrators of the mischief appears to be getting some sadistic pleasure out of hurting sentiments of others, some like-minded young people from Kinnimulky, Udyavar here, came together and disposed off old pictures of gods and other items found under an ancient peepal tree near Balayipade in tune with Hindu culture and belief systems by discharging them in a rivulet.

Nagaraj from near Kinnimulky, who happens to be a lawyer by profession, often saw the orphaned pictures of gods lying under the peepal tree in a neglected state, and battered by rain and sunshine. He was feeling uncomfortable at the sight of these pictures and was thinking about ways to handle this matter. Two days back, he and his friends came together, gathered information about the procedure to dispose off the pictures from the priest of Lord Veerabhadra temple and continued with the task.

Many a time pictures of gods get dilapidated or damaged. People have often been seen to dispose off such pictures under the peepal tree. People shifting out from rented houses to far off places too choose to get rid of such pictures in similar fashion. The team of young people retrieved about 200 pictures of different gods which had been heaped since many years under the said peepal tree and also a two-feet high idol of Lord Krishna, put them in gunny bags, and discharged them in tune with religious rituals. The platform around the peepal tree was cleaned, and a banner prohibiting disposal of pictures of gods was hung there. Nagaraj says that he has done his bit to remind the locals that it is their duty to maintain cleanliness and tidiness of their surroundings.

This team has also been following the practice of setting aside water in a bowl everyday for the birds suffering due to hot summer. The team members have chosen to call themselves 'Panchajanya Kinnimulky'. Govardhan, Harish Kumar, Deepak Kumar are the main members of Panchajanya team. They want to continue to serve the society in their own way in future too.

The hindu mutt leaders should discourage this practice of gods being consigned to roadside trees and subject to exhaust and dirt. It is an insult to our culture where magnificient temples were built to house them.

Very good job Nagaraj and Team, Really appreciated what you have done. Nagaraj when you read the comments below don't let yourself turn down, People like to comment even if do right or wrong, we always need to find the best among the two. Here i and also many users will agree you have done right step ,

What we have to learn is from Nagaraj's works is, He has taken the initiative to do this and keep the society clean including feeding the animals and many other great initiatives i believe. We need to look and work to create a similar society in each town and village where people from different caste and religion come together and do such noble cause. Where we learn to work together respect each other and live together only then we can make great nation like India this is the need of time.

Dear shilpa I had similar opinion.
Most of the people are stuck with religious belief, faith and seek the advice & guidance from Head priest/ Holliman what course of action need to be taken. May be people are afraid to burn such things out of fear (likely repercussions following burning) and acted accordingly. Here even if disposed in the river most of the pictures will float and come to the shore and the process needs to repeated. What is the best solution? No right answer.

Was it not good to burn them rather than disposing in the lake / river as it might come to the shore and chances of people stamping them or again dumping them in garbage. I burn them. This is from point of view.

Good job by the youngsters. However, instead of throwing the articles in river which may create pollution problem, i suggest to bury them in sand. This is just my suggestion and hope none will be offended. Pls excuse me if i am wrong.

look at that. Some group of youth has done some good work, let's appreciate it. don't bother to ask what else they could have done ... like they should have recycled it... created pollution... please. why the hell you didn't do it then. you should initiated the same act, getting all those recycled and all. It's very nice to comment, tough to get in to act. some people felt they need to do something and they have done it. It's good that you left in river because it's the belief here in coastal that such items need to be left in river or sea. Whether it comes back due to tides and wind power.... let's see. when they have done this much, the same people may go something for that also. than you sitting and commenting something stupid... let's start praising good work done by some youth. please.

Good Initiative. However, Instead of throwing it to the sea, should have consulted religious leaders for their opinion and after blessed by the priest through holy water should have burned it.

We have disposed those photos in a dignified way to our belief. We have detached glass and card board parts separately and dumped those in dumping yard. And only photo paper /sheet which are easily soluble in water are disposed there that too in middle of river.

Why create these posters at first place when we already know it is going to eat dust with time and then dump them in the serene river and pollute it?
Isn’t this cycle going to create an environmental problem over a period of time?
Give it a thought people and stop this act of trying to be too religious and limit these posters to your own home and temples where you can maintain it appropriately.

Why they are disposing it in river. It will be hazardous and also pollute the river, eventually it will submerge in ocean. Instead they can burn it.
