Abu Dhabi, Mar 22: As the sun rises on Friday March 24, the world will wake up to a celebration of longevity and passion for the game of cricket in the desert sands of UAE. Sunshine Cricket Club, Abu Dhabi the club consisting of expatriates, which was founded in 1976 by a group of friends who were cricket enthusiasts has continued in the same vein on every Friday and public holidays during non-summer months for the past 40 years across various grounds in Abu Dhabi.
Forty long years is not a mean achievement considering the constraints the expatriates have in their adopted country to carry on with dedication and enthusiasm to play the game of cricket for this long years without a break for mere entertainment to be away from the stressful life and rigorous working condition.
The members who got together every Friday morning ensured that their on-field friendship blossomed into relationships of a lifetime as well as created a new avenue for enjoyment and fun for all members. The examples of this bond are, many with old members dropping in on Friday mornings to chat and watch the current members go through their paces on the field and when a member with medical issues but without enough means to pay for the treatment is financially supported by all members.
Sunshine Cricket Club will be commemorating this momentous occasion by holding its Annual Mega tournament to be played amongst its current and past members at the iconic venue of Emirates Palace Hotel Cricket Ground in Abu Dhabi.
The Committee will be organizing a tournament with 6 participating teams drafted out of members old and new who come together irrespective of age and background. The air of excitement and anticipation is on a high with members travelling from as far to be part of this wonderful reunion. The 6 participating teams which have been picked prior to the tournament are to be ably led by Ritesh, Riyaz, Mazhar, Thoufeeq, Narayan and Yaseen.
The chairperson and committee members are looking forward to an exciting day of cricket at the picturesque venue and are on the lookout for old members who have played over the years to join in the celebrations. The celebrations will culminate with the annual get-together to be held at a local Hotel the following week on March 31.
