Won't take a step back from fashion: Vikram Phadnis

Mumbai, Jan 19 (IANS): Popular designer Vikram Phadnis, who is making his directorial debut with the upcoming Marathi film "Hrudayantar", says though he has ventured into the world of cinema he will not take a step back from fashion.

"Not at all. That is my bread and butter and that is something I will do till the very last day," Phadnis told IANS over phone from Mumbai, when asked if he plans to take a step back from fashion.

Phadnis says he always wanted to direct a film.

"I have been writing this script for two years and just wanted it to materialise... Director is always the captain of the ship and I have been a technician for 25 years, so it was my need to progress and now we are directing a film," he added.

Why a Marathi film for making a directorial debut?

"I am a Maharashtrian and I am very proud of the fact that Marathi cinema has evolved so much. It has it's own standing and viewership... I'm comfortable with the language and I thought why not," he said.

"Today Punjabi, Marathi and Gujarati films, they have there own (viewership)...I think with the subtitles and television I think it has got a great appeal. I think people from all regions want to watch great cinema," he added.

Known for styling Bollywood celebrities like Sridevi, Sushmita Sen, Malaika Arora Khan, Bipasha Basu and Dia Mirza, Phadnis says his fashion creations will be seen in "Hrudayantar".

"Yes (my creations will be seen in the film). But it's a very simple film. It is not a film on fashion... The costumes are not that important... I am doing that costumes, but it is not the main thing," he said.
