Voting concludes in Singapore general election

Singapore, Sep 11 (IANS): Voting concluded on Friday in Singapore's general election with more than 2.46 million voters casting their ballots in 832 internal polling stations and 10 designated overseas polling stations.

Voters can get a hint on the results as the Election Department for the first time decided to conduct a sample count ahead of the announcing of the final results, Xinhua news agency reported.

The previous results of sample count were highly in line with the final ones, which have a confidence level of 95 percent.

The ruling People's Action Party (PAP) was challenged in all available 89 parliamentary seats for the first time in the city state's history.

The 89 seats were split into 16 group representation constituencies (GRCs), where the candidates from a contesting party is required to be fielded as a team, and 13 single member constituencies (SMC).

The ruling People's Action Party took 81 of the then 87 parliamentary seats at the 2011 general election with 60.14 percent of the popular votes, which is lower than the 66.6 percent in general election in 2006.
