Modi cannot lead India effectively: New York Times Editorial Board

New York, Oct 27 (PTI): Narendra Modi, BJP's prime ministerial candidate, cannot hope to lead India effectively if he inspires "fear" and "antipathy" among many of its people, the New York Times has commented in an unusual move.

"Mr Modi has shown no ability to work with opposition parties or tolerate dissent," the Editorial Board of the New York Times said in a stinging editorial on the 63-year-old BJP leader.

The editorial said that Modi has already "alienated" BJP's political partners when Janata Dal (United), an important regional party broke off its 17-year alliance with the "party because it found Mr Modi unacceptable."

India was a country with multiple religions and "Mr Modi cannot hope to lead it effectively if he inspires fear and antipathy among many of its people," it said while recalling that nearly 1,000 people died in the 2002 riots in Gujarat.

The editorial, published yesterday, also questioned Modi's economic track record in Gujarat.

The "economic record in Gujarat is not entirely admirable, either," it said.

"Muslims in Gujarat, for instance, are much more likely to be poor than Muslims in India as a whole, even though the state has a lower poverty rate than the country," the editorial said.

"His rise to power is deeply troubling to many Indians, especially the country's 138 million Muslims and its many other minorities," said the 19-member Editorial Board, headed by India-born Andrew Rosenthal, the editorial page editor of The New York Times.

Whatever you and others may say - he does not have a clean image in his political life and that is the draw back for him to become PM.
We can not choose anyone who wants to be a PM even if there are allegations of criminality against the person based on the events happened. If people choose such a candidate that means we are upholding criminals\wrong doers to be our leaders. Is that what we want?

It is always one s aspiration to become something on their own. Be it of any religion. I am sure everyone will agree to it. When people have such ambitions i cant understand how you can want rahul gandhi as PM!. What does he have to his credit?. Only that he is the Gandhi Scion?. Modi has proved he administrative credibility and nobody can take that away from him. All you guys commenting he is a butcher is not above law and the law has given modi a clean chit. So i can only give a hoot to your comments. Assume, modi had made the ISI remark. The pseudos would have got up in arms, but now even top congress leaders are claiming it to be right!. Why? for the plain and simple reason that nobody have the guts to stand up against that statement. This is called dictatorship and not Modi's straight forward on the face talks. Digest it pseudos!!

What New York Times knows about Indian Politics. It's only Times Magazine once claimed Dr.Manmohan Singh is not a good Prime Minister. First of all let them concentrate on there own economy which is now in 'deep crises'. It's just surviving on 'Donor's Country'. How many times collapse of your economy eventhough India remain strong upto now. A shephard who become a Banker - a Jewish M/s.Lehman Brothers and citi bank who overnight become bankrupt ..and now latter depend upon government's funds. Place like Detroit once hub of vehicles now become deserted. No money left for NASA to conduct any further studies..depend upon developing countries. You people nothing but 'Naam Bade..Darshan Khote'.

BJP never bother about other parties to form the government as it's going to sweep in majority in all the states. As far as Gujarat muslims they far above in level than comparing to people from other states. Good to know wipro's Aziz Premji. Never think 14 plus 2% minorites are going to vote for BJP, Just forget it. It's now waves of Modiji all over. America is now afraid Modiji will turn towards China. Jai Ho..

The comments of NY Times apart, Modi is alleged to be a human butcher with hands soaked in blood. Presently, he does not get US visa. India is the largest democracy in the world and such a man is ed to be the PM! Though the allegations are not proved, de facto, for better or worse, CBI is Govt's parrot. Whatever it is, for such a position, Caesar's wife should be above suspicion.

His speech is nothing but hatred, hatred and hatred.

I am neither against BPJ nor Congress. This man talks of Swiss money and when BJP was in power, they did not bring the money to India. He is ed by RSS and
Ram temple is in their agenda. In the name of Ram, India will have a blood bath, because Al-queda, Taliban and other terrorist organizations will not keep quiet.
India will have to spend a fortune to protect Ram Mandir, if built.

BJP will not get majority anyway as per the situation, but they may form a Govt. But with such an individual, whether he will be able to complete 5 years in a situation with so many parties around the NDA is another question.

I think you are all just jumping to conclusions on this article.
The NYT did not say BJP is not capable of leading the Government in India. They are pointing out about MODI, a black sheep in the BJP Party for his infamous actions which has created fear and antipathy and the wrath of majority of people in India against him for everything that happened in Gujarath and the fake reports of Gujarath development. They know how poor people live in Gujarath, how they are suppressed and are so poor they even cannot migrate to other states.
As there is mistrust amongst the larger section of people in India, it is felt, he is not the fit candidate from BJP to become PM.
It means, i\o him BJP could have projected some other candidate.

What they say is the truth too unless RSS\BJPians and BJP (BJP presently has been downgraded as door watchman for RSS office rear door and not in the decision making panel anymore)feel and know that this party has none other capable candidate to contest for PM post. What a shame......

It is true that the so called national parties cannot win the majority seats in India as of now. The state or regional parties are more strong at the root and have better contact with the people. It will be the day of regional parties or union of regional parties that will be dominating Indian politics. Both BJP and Congress have lost or have not gained the confidence of regional parties. The BJP may gain some more seats but is too polarised to make any allies. It will be a grand "samudra manthan of 2014 where we will get Haalahala or Amrutha if we have luck to find a Vishakanta.

Since China , Russia already distanced from USA and Saudi Arabia backed off of UN council seat , US desperately need India and Sonia.
Both leaders from Congress already visited US and plans are secure.

Modi coming to power will be the biggest hurdle and against the interest of US.

But as usual US will use every conflict to its benefit. Arms dumping will flourish thru Kashmir ,Tuticorn, Karbi and communal violence will be fostered, some how BJP govt will be toppled.

Distanced from USA? When did China and Russia bed with USA? As for Saudis, yes, they have turned down the chair in UN Security Council, but as of today all it’s oil transactions along with those of other OPEC countries, taking place in US dollars only and that’s what keeps the dollar mighty and strong. Even though there are rumors that the petrodollar system is going collapse soon, US will leave no stone unturned to thwart it from happening. But we Indians know from the past experience, regardless of USD’s ascending or descending, INR has know only one direction and that is southwards.

In kargil we lost thousands of soldiers.

BJP is creating chaos inside the country and they were shivering to cross the broder. Why not cross the border.
Defeated badly loosing thousands of our soldiers?!. We haven’t lost in two india Pakistan wars and we lost in proxy war during NDA rule.
If the former United States president William jaferson Clinton was not pressing hard to Nawaaz Sherief to pull back their troops we the Indians were in Stone Age because of this NDA’s rule.

The perception of a foreign media on the internal political scene is totally unfounded. What India needs today is a leader who do not bow to the whims and fancies of political opposition, mainly composing of corrupt or sycophant politicians. Modi, with his uncompromising, and 'no-nonsense' attitude may be the right choice under the prevailing political scene in India. Americans may be apprehensive of the fact, that Modi may be leveraging Indian talent, and use the synergy of the Country for its own development. They may be fearful, that India's dependence on USA may reduce drastically thus, swinging the balance of payments heavily in favor of India. If every educated Indian can see these aspects, and influence at least one or two illiterate fellow Countrymen, then we can expect to see a noble Government in Place in 2014

Very soon they will publish another article RAHUL GANDHI IS MOST SUITABLE TO LEAD INDIA.

It is commonsense that congress has paid NYT to publish this article. You need to enlighten yourself.

Let this New York Times asks for public opinion about themselves in New York itself and I am sure they will stop commenting against others. What about Obama Care Medical Insurance Policy and stoppage of USA Government for one or two weeks?

People sitting in the USA can not know the ground realty of India otherwise they would not have commented "JDU alinieted because off Modi" they do not know the fact that to get more finance and to get Muslim Votes Nitish Kumar back stabbed BJP and he will have to face the consequence in the coming election, Further, they know Modi will not bow down to USA like congress did for the Atomic subject, Modi willNot allow To purchase American arms by taking bribe.
