Indian-American becomes top US judge, creates history

Washington, Sep 27 (IANS): With his hand on the Gita and watched by family friend Gursharan Kaur, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's wife, Chandigarh-born legal luminary Sri Srinivasan made history as he became the first Indian American to be sworn in as a judge of what is often called the second most powerful court in the US.

Srinivasan, 46, was sworn in an overflowing court room by retired Supreme Court judge Sandra Day O'Connor, in the presence of legal luminaries, friends and families as his mother Saroja Srinivasan held the Gita, the sacred book of Hinduism, before him.

Gursharan Kaur literally rushed from the airport with just a short halt at the hotel to watch the investiture of Srinivasan on the bench of the US Courts of Appeal for the District of Columbia Circuit.

O'Connor, for whom Srinivasan once clerked, called him "fair, faultless and fabulous".

Confirmed by the US Senate in May by a 97 to 0 vote, Srinivasan was earlier principal deputy solicitor general of the US to which job he succeeded another Indian American, Neal Kumar Katyal, in August last year.

Srinivasan came to the US with his parents in the 1970s at the age of four. His family settled in Lawrence, Kansas, where his father was a mathematics professor at the University of Kansas, and his mother taught at the Kansas City Art Institute.

He received his BA with honours and distinction in 1989 from Stanford University and his JD with distinction in 1995 from Stanford Law School, where he was elected to Order of the Coif and served as an editor of the Stanford Law Review.

Mr. Shankar, the Major point is Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India and only Lady Prime Minister of India Who was highly respected through out the World, Mr. Rajeev Gandhi was the Son of the Prime Minister and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was the Wife of Late. Mr. Rajeev Gandhi who was also a Prime Minister of India. These are the Highest and Top Most post in India. Still you discriminate Mrs. Sonia Gandhi even though she has not taken the post of Prime Minister of India. Supreme Court has upheld her citizenship and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was Constitutionally eligible to be Prime Minister of India.

Mr. Shankar false allegation are not valid unless you prove it in the court of law and convict. A person cannot be considered a criminal or corrupt unless they are convicted. If you are providing false allegation then it is a crime.

Only an American citizen can become President of the US of A. He/She may be of Indian parentage or "origin". Then we will proudly claim as "ours" the one we abandoned to seek his/her fortune on foreign shores.

Look at the difference between INDIA and USA. In India when Mrs. Sonia Gandhi is legally a citizen of India people call her Italian lady, but in USA an Indian born is a Judge of a Second Top US court, People in India are proud of it. See the attitude of the people in India, people in India discriminate Sonia Gandhi and appreciate an Indian born Judge in US court. Why do people discriminate Sonia Gandhi as Italian Born Women being an Indian Citizen. Americans do not discriminate Mr. Srinivasan, 46 as an Indian born American, but they respect him as an American and appoint him as a judge of a Second Top US Court. We appreciate Americans in all Respect.

This is the best comment I ever read in Daijiworld. This is a lesson to Indians in India how to respect a citizen of their country, irrespective of his or her country of origin.

    Dear Blaan Mendonca, USA,

INDIANS ARE EXITED AND THRILLED WHEN INDIANS IN ABROAD ARE OCCUPYING HIGHEST POSITIONS.

HOWEVER IF A FOREIGNER IN INDIA OCCUPIES HIGHEST POSITION ONE WOMEN /SUSHMA SWARAJ SAID IF SONIA/SHE BECOMES PRIME MINISTER I SHALL SHAVE MY HEAD. HER FATHER WAS A RSS MAN.

RSS IS THE MAIN PROBLEM IN INDIA. THEY WANTED ONLY HIGHER CASTES IN THE PRIME POSITIONS WHICH WAS BASHED BY WE INDIAN CITIZENS.

    Mr.Blaan Mendonca, USA,

The Indians in US does not try to over power the government. they do not involve themselves or their kins in corruption. They do not benefit by facilitating defence deals to indian companies (by taking cuts) and compromise security of USA. these are some of the basic differences between US top citizens of Indian origin and Indian Top citizens of Italian origin.
the major point, Mr. Srinivasan has earned his way to the top!

    Mr. Shankar,

McKinsey head Rajat Gupta , convicted on insider trading charges, are urging his acquaintances to submit letters of support to a US judge presiding over his case here to help secure a lenient sentence for the Indian-American. Gupta, 63, was found guilty by a jury last month of passing confidential boardroom information about Goldman Sachs to hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam.

An Indian-American former Mckinsey partner, a key government witness in the high-profile insider trading trial of Wall Street tycoons Raj Rajaratnam and Rajat Gupta , was today sentenced to years probation and ordered to forfeit $ 2.26 million on securities fraud. Anil Kumar , 53, was sentenced by US Circuit Court Judge Denny Chin in Manhattan federal court today. Apart from the probation sentence, he was also ordered to forfeit $ 2.26 million. In court papers, prosecutors had told the judge that Kumar had earned leniency with his willingness to come clean about his misdeeds.
