Puttur: KSRTC bus rams into jeep - Four of family killed on spot

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (DV/SP)

Update: June 3

Puttur, Jun 2: Four persons of a family were killed on the spot in a ghastly accident that took place at Sentyar near Puttur here on Sunday June 2.

The deceased have been identified as Peter Mascarenhas, Leena Mascarenhas, son Preethesh (13) and brother Anthony.

The accident occured when a KSRTC bus plying from Bellare to Sullia rammed into their jeep. They were travelling from Sullia to Puttur after attending a marriage function when the accident took place.

Leena’s son, Preetham Mascarenhas (14), and Joslyn Mascarenhas (22), daughter of Antony Mascarenhas, who sustained grievous injuries in the accident, are being treated in a private hospital in Mangalore. All those travelling in the ill-fated jeep were thrown onto the road because of the impact of the collision between the two vehicles.

Leena Mascarenhas was a Congress member of the Puttur municipal council. She was elected for the second time as municipal councillor in the recent election. She represented Parladka ward in the town, and had become victorious by 12 votes in the first attempt, and had increased her tally of victory margin to over 200 votes in her second attempt.

Peter Mascarenhas was peon in St Philomena High School and has put in 30 years of service. He celebrated his 52nd birthday on Saturday June 1. Both Peter and Leena were well known in Puttur for their social work and for helping the needy, sources said.

Many locals have blamed the improved road conditions and lack of road discipline for the reckless speed of the vehicles at this stretch, which has several sharp bends, for the swelling number of accidents in the region.

A case has been registered in Puttur rural police station.

U T Khadar, Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police (SP), Abhishek Goel, Puttur MLA, Shakuntala Shetty, Puttur block Congress president, Hemanath Shetty, and a number of other leaders from Congress and other parties visited the family of the deceased, and offered condolences.

Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister, B Ramanath Rai, Udupi district in-charge minister, Vinay Kumar Sorake, MP, Nalin Kumar Kateel, former chief minister, D V Sadananda Gowda, and many other leaders have expressed shock and grief at the ghastly accident, besides offering condolences to the grief-stricken family members.

Inspite of bad roads, I will always blame here, the main culprit is heavy duty vehicle drivers, here it is Bus driver. The reason is quite obvious. If the accident takes place between heavy duty vehicle and saloon cars, the drivers of heavy duty are safe.

Reckless driving, no punishment to the drivers, lack of will by the RTO authorities to implement stringent punishment like cancellation of driving licences etc can minimize the accidents.

Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of the family. May their soul rest in peace.

Absolutely, these tragedies could have been averted, if we had good road infrastructure with trained and responsible drivers.

Govt should make Public Transport Companies to adopt strict safety measures, including hiring drivers trained and certified. Also strict follow of lane discipline.

The RTOs all over India should pass a rule to fix the Speed-Controller Governor compulsory in all their Inter-City killer buses (both public and private), the inflammable gasoline and chemical carrying bullet tankers and the timber carrying trail lorries.
The RTOs should confiscate the RC of over-loading and speeding vehicles for six months and cancel the DL of repeated offenders and notify their name and finger-print to all the RTOs in India so that they will not make fraud DL in another name.
May the victims soul rest in peace.

The road accidents are taking more life's causing huge loss to the families and economy. The number of people who die in road accidents every year is highest in the world but our government is still sleeping on this matter. We need more stringent laws and effective implementation to bring down the road accidents. While rail and flight accidents get huge cover in the media and huge cry among the public we seem to forget that people who die in road accidents are no different.

    1) There should be education on road safety to the drivers and general public.
    2) The fines which are being imposed for violating rules should catch up with inflation. These fines make mockery of natural justice.
    3) Insurance companies should be made to pay similar compensation as that of life's lost in air accident. Why should a person's family who gets killed in road accident get a pitty amount when the loss is similar to that of air accident victims? Public should lobby to increase 3rd party claims similar to air accident compensation then only some driving sense will prevail.

It looks the road is filled with lot of mud due to the incomplete road work by KRDCL (Karnataka Road development Corporation), who were entrusted with the widening of the road between Madikeri - Sampaje - Puttur. Inspite of repeated warnings by the previous Chief Minister Mr.Sadananda Gowda and his successor, they never bothered to complete the road work in time. The Contractor who was entrusted with this work is also least bothered.
The Police should book both the irresponsible Managing Director of KRDCL and the Contractor for their indifferent attitude in completing the road work in time.
Secondly, what I have observed in KSRTC that the recent recruited drivers and conductors are young and they are from Ghat areas. They are entrusted with the work of driving of the vehicles in DK and Udupi region and beyond. These drivers have little knowledge of the topography of the region and the conditions of the road during rainy season. Driving a vehicle in DK and Udupi during monsoon needs special skills. It is time the KSRTC employ or entrust the work of driving the vehicles in DK and Udupi region to the local people or drivers having skill in driving the vehicle during rainy season. Jai Hind.
