Puttur: Congress approves Shakuntala Shetty's candidature?

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Apr 1: The taluk is agog with talks that former BJP MLA, Shakuntala Shetty, has been cleared as the party candidate by the Congress leadership for the ensuing assembly election from this constituency. The rumours got further thrust, after Shakuntala met her mentor, Rama Bhat on Sunday March 31 afternoon and held discussions with him.

BJP had refused to field Shakuntala Shetty after her first term as MLA. Angered by this, veteran BJP leader, Rama Bhat, and others had come out of BJP, and formed ‘Swabhimani Vedike’ with the support of some disgruntled BJP leaders, and fielded Shakuntala Shetty under this banner, as an independent candidate. She had got 25,171 votes in the last election, but had to suffer defeat at the hands of BJP candidate, Mallika Prasad.

Nudging aside the overtures of JDS, which was keen on getting her into its fold, Shakuntala Shetty had joined the Congress at a function held at Bangalore in the presence of former MP, Vinay Kumar Sorake. Thereafter, her name is being coined as a prospective candidate from Puttur constituency, along with block Congress president, Kavu Hemanath Shetty, entrepreneur, Nabhiraj Jain, A Navin Bhandary, and former zilla panchayat member, Bharat Mundody.

There was immense pressure on Sorake to enter the fray, but it is said he has extended support to Shakuntala Shetty’s nomination instead. Hemanath Shetty, it is said, has support from former union minister, Janardhan Poojary, while Nabhiraj Jain claimed the backing of opposition leader in the assembly, Siddaramaiah. A Navin Bhandary is said to have the blessings of union minister, M Veerappa Moily.

The group supporting  Shakuntala Shetty is buoyant now, supposedly because of the signals it has received from the party. However, the situation is quite fluid and fast-changing political developments can suddenly prop up any one of the above candidates, although at present it appears that Shakuntala Shetty has gained upper hand.

Yes, it is Gopala Poojari. typing eror. Traditional vote banks of Billawa Communities not desert congress because it is congress which has given more opportunities of political empowerment to them.On the other hand take for example of SHAKKU AKKA..It is Vinay Kumar Sorake who insisted to award Ticket to her..In Kaup there are good chunk of bunts votes who will thank Sorake for supporting Shakkuakka.Once Assembly election completed, future MLCs and MP(RS)will be compensated to Billawa Communities if necessitated .DK-UDUPI constituencies were so far dominated by both these two communities and may be some time ups and downs defends up on pulse of the voters.Apart from that Minority votes also counts for any edge for a given candidates.

This time some thing unusual will happen in Bantwal constituency.Though Sri Rai is a most viable candidate for Congress,JDS will field a strong candidate from backward caste hitherto neglected by both Congress and BJP.He will be having strong base in the constituency and will garner votes of even Billawa community there nothing withstanding their affinity to Congress since years.People from Sangha parivar from that area are already on work to rope in the JDS probable candidate and it is unlikely that they will succeed in their effort if his interview to Suvarna news channel yesterday is any indicate.I also hope that efforts of Sangha Paivar will be a boon to JDS this time in Bantwal as it has significant voters from backward caste in the area.Readers wait for two days for flash news.....

Very good. One more MLA Seat in BJP kit now without even context in Puttur region. Till date BJP had to lose some seats because of inner fighting but slowly they are regaining the base due to mismanagement of Congress as usual.

From Baindur it is Gopala Poojari, and not Gopala Bhandari.
Mr. Louis D'souza KuWait - I think probable candidate Shyamala Bhandari from Kundapur is a Bunt, but I am not Sure.
Bunt Candidates from both neighboring constituency of Puttur & Bantwal may push Billavas away from Cong.

@ Janata,re collect and remind yourself that Shobakka was only women rep in BJP govt for the past 5 years. She was forced to resign not once but twice and she was harassed by men dominated cabinet of BJP!!!Our BJP friends openly not accept but in private they will.Women fraternity in India are not safe in womb as well as after...Men dominated society will not accept women's power be he BJP/CONG/JDS. Only women knows how women in India were victimized.

Shaku Akka being fielded or not would not necessarily change the tide in favour of Congress in Puttur. Electorally, the public has been voting towards BJP in the last 4 Assembly elections & even if there is a huge 10% swing away from BJP (as in the ULB) still the lead maintained in the last two elections of 33% could swing it their way. Rama Bhat & party are spent forces & Shaku Akka too has lost her credibility in the last few years a la Yeddurappa & his cronies. Claiming support to Sonia ji for upliftment of women that too in Karnataka is not justified as this assembly has the least women candidates in Southern India- Especially when compared to close neighbours Kerala & TN. If Sonia ji needs to emphasise on this pint to the state, then 33% rule needs to be applied as requisite under the Womens quota bill. Will this be done in the wake of machoist leaders like Siddu or Paramu - I can hardly say that it will be. Bengaluru which has the largest chunk of cosmopolitan seats hardly witnessed 4 women candidates from Congress against 8 of the BJP & 6 of the JDS. Congress needs to act on this first rather than empty boasting of womens empowerment via Italy as someone mentioned in this forum....We need no inspiration from her Sirji...

These calculations will remain as calculations only and let us wait with patience till May 8......BJP will learn a lesson and it will be time introspetion for them as to ponder why people had voted them in earlier elections....to make money and give good governance...It is also time then for DVS and take a tour of his native place to see how the roads in the ineriors in Puttur....
