Bangalore: Priest found murdered in seminary premises

Bangalore: Fr K J Thomas of St Peter's Seminary murdered, archbishop condemns act

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Updated

Bangalore, Apr 1: Archbishop of Bangalore Dr Bernard Moras has condoled the shocking demise of Fr K J Thomas, rector of St Peter's Pontifical Seminary, who was found murdered at the Seminary here on Monday April 1.

A media release signed by the archbishop stated:

"Today early morning I received the shocking and the sad news of the most brutal murder of Fr K J Thomas, Rector of St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore in the early hours of 1st April. I immediately rushed to the Seminary to initiate the Investigation. The top police officials came to the spot and are investigating this murder case and, meanwhile, his body was taken to M S Ramaiah Hospital for post mortem.

This is the most heinous crime and I strongly condemn the murder of Fr K J Thomas who was a very pious, soft spoken and harmless priest. He was serving St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore as its Rector for the second term. His death is a great loss to all of us, especially to the seminary.

A Requiem Mass will be offered for the late Fr Thomas at St Peter’s Seminary Chapel, Bangalore on Tuesday, April 2 at 7.30 am before his mortal remains are moved to his diocese of Ootacamund. The funeral date, place and time will be decided by the Bishop of Ootacamund, in consultation with the family members of the deceased.

On behalf of the Board of Bishops, the priests, religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Bangalore and the other Catholic dioceses of Karnataka, I express my heartfelt and deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and friends of the late Fr K J Thomas; to the Bishop, priests, religious and the faithful of the Diocese of Ootacamund; and to the staff and students of St Peter’s Pontifical Seminary. Please pray for the repose of his soul, and consolation and strength to the bereaved family members to accept this irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace.

With God’s blessings,

Bernard Moras
Archbishop of Bangalore"

Bangalore: Priest found murdered in seminary premises

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Apr 1: In a mysterious incident, the priest of a seminary in the city was found murdered in the premises of the seminary on Monday April 1 morning.

The body of Fr K J Thomas (65) was found lying in the St Peter's Pontifical Seminary premises in the morning.

It is suspected that he was killed at night and his body was shifted to a room by the culprits. Sources said that the murderers took advantage of the heavy rains that lashed Bangalore at night. Due to the rains, the security men were inside their quarters, which made it easier for the culprits.

The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.

There is information that the procurator of the seminary had heard some sounds and possible screaming at around 2.30 or 3 am. But it is said he did not venture out of his room. This fact gives rise to questions and speculations.

The attackers apparently hit the face of Fr Thomas with a brick to prevent him from raising an alarm. His body was forcibly dragged inside the dining room of the seminary. The circumstances suggest that the priest's end came there.

The seminary is located in Yeshwantpur in the city, near Yeshwantpur police station. It is said that Fr Thomas was on his second posting in the Seminary's training centre.

Local policemen, additional police commissioner Alok Kumar, and various leaders visited the church. Investigations are on.

Archbishop Bernard Moras, vicar general Fr Antonyswamy and other priests have been camping in seminary since morning.

Mild mannered, soft spoken Fr K J Thomas, hails from Ettumanoor in Kottayam diocese. He however opted the Ooty diocese. Fr K J has been serving as rector for a long time. With the language issue rocking archidiocese since last several years, Fr K J though a Malayalee, has been deftly and tactfully managing the seminary. Fr K J's popularity can be gauged from the fact that he has been serving as rector for the second term and liked by everybody for his affable and friendly nature. He has been serving seminary for some 30 years in different capacities.

Fr K J Thomas was to go to the airport today morning to receive his sister, who is a nun, coming from Pondicherry. The sister, who was surprised that repeated calls to Fr Thomas went unanswered, came from the airport to the seminary in an auto rickshaw, but she was asked to stay at the nearby convent as the policemen had already arrived and begun investigations.

According to some sources, unidentified assailants chased Fr Thomas, who was running for his life, and hit his face and head with bricks. It is as yet not certain whether he was stabbed or not. The attackers were so brutal that those who saw his body could not identify it initially.

The sources also guessed that the attackers would have come with the intention of committing theft there, as apparently they had ransacked the reception counter for keys and valuables.

It may be recalled that pro-kannada activists of Akhila Karnataka Catholic Chraistara Sangha with the support of some priests have been demanding that St Peter's Seminary should be declared an exclusive Kannada seminary and that its management should be entrusted only Bishops from Karnataka and not Tamilandu as is the present case.

Another version according to informed sources is that the intruders may have been after some valuable documents as Fr K J's room was ransacked. However, his laptop, iPad and other valuable gadgets were left untouched.

Fr K J's brother and nephew are expected to arrive from the US.

The body has been taken to M S Ramaiah Hospital for post-mortem and will be kept in the mortunary afterwards.

Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras has condemned the dastardly and most heinous act of murder of a pious, soft-spoken and mild mannered priest like Fr K J Thomas.

The archbishop said the details of the funeral like date and place will be decided by the bereaved family of Fr K J and the Ooty bishop.

    John 15 : 18
18 “If the world hates you, just remember that it has hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, then the world would love you as its own. But I chose you from this world, and you do not belong to it that is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘Slaves are not greater than their master.’ If people persecuted me, they will persecute you too if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too. 21 But they will do all this to you because you are mine for they do not know the one who sent me. 22 They would not have been guilty of sin if I had not come and spoken to them as it is, they no longer have any excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 They would not have been guilty of sin if I had not done among them the things that no one else ever did as it is, they have seen what I did, and they hate both me and my Father. 25 This, however, was bound to happen so that what is written in their Law may come true: ‘They hated me for no reason at all.’

Yes, Bangalore for a second, forgot to breathe, on hearing the shocking news. I have not met this priest but I gather that he was a great soul! THank God for such a good human! But the act I condemn.. There is jealousy, hatred, fear of being exposed, hunger for power & post, & revenge behind this dirty act of murder. I wish that those who prepared the scketch for his murder be punished... but I doubt would these culprits be ever be nabbed by our weak law bec they have money & influence to escape all such things. Its a pity such things are happening in the church. The laity are losing faith in the consecrated persons, failing to find Christ and values. It is a challenge for rest of the priests & religious to portray Christ in their life & actions. 'The Priest is dead, long live the priest!' may his spirit of riteousness and truth & justice live in the hearts of us. Amen

In my opinion, the reason for his murder cannot be the language issue or the robbery as assumed by some media sources.

Because - the common language used in the Indian Seminaries is English and even the vernacular languages given equal status over there. The chances of outsiders interefering with the internal matters of the seminaries in such cases is also very remote.

Robbery is also out of question because everyone is aware that he does not have gold or silver in his possession, other than few hundred Rupees of pocket money.

It is very sad to note that we have lost a well educated and soft spoken priest.

My dear Rev.Fr. K.J.Thomas, you were one of my role models. Nobody can be so honest and humble and friendly. How much effort and hard work you had put in to maintain and safe guard the seminary. As a priest of my own diocese I was very proud of you. You were leading really a saintly life. I thought I would be meeting you again next year in January. I am really shattered. You were so concerned about others that you had opened the door door even at 2:30 early morning, but this time only to your murderers. Dear father pray for us from heaven. We will follow your foot steps to serve Jesus and the diocese. Rector of a Pontifical Seminary is murdered in such a cruel manner, is very painful. Dear father you have followed the foot steps of St. Peter the patron of our seminary. He was murdered by the enemies from out side but you seem to from inside. You have shed blood for Christ on the Easter day. May your soul rest in Peace. May all your dear and near ones be consoled.

According to me most of the churches do not have security. It is very essential to have security because for thieves and rogues there is no religion. The Bishop's of each diocese, just collecting the bounty from the churches is not enough but strictly they should provide security to all the churches. No one can approach the priest without security clearance. The security at the seminary was sub-standard.

Very sad to hear this news. Last Wednesday, I met him in Christ the King church for confession and he was so good in explaining facts (first time I felt so good after confessing to a priest). He was there during Good Friday service as well and can't forget his smiling face. Can't imagine that he was living his last couple of days in this world! May God bless his soul.

Shocked to hear the death of Fr KJ Thomas,Rector of St Peters. The manner in which he was killed is all the more shocking. How could a Priest of God be subjected to such bruatility? We pray that those responsible for his death would surrender to the authorities and subject themselves to the law of the land. The investigation should cover all possibility of both internal and external personnel committing the crime. May His Soul Rest in Peace. Heartfelt condolence to the bereaved members of his family especially his sister (Nun) who(according to this report)came to visit him.

Its a shocking news to know about the brutal act of murder of Fr. K. J. He was a soft and friendly person to all. He was a well balanced administrator. When he joined St. Peter's Seminary as a staff, we were the first batch to be taught by him in late 1980's. He had simple and humble way of relating himself with others. He made others happy by his witty nature. Though forgiveness is part and parcel of Christianity, Justice should and must prevail. The culprits should receive what they deserve by the law. May Reverend father's soul rest in peace.

Yesterday in one English TV News Channel they had given complete crime chart of Metropolitan cities of India. Bengaluru ranks Third after Delhi & Mumbai in all types of Crimes. Crime in Chennai is just less than 30% of what it is in Bengaluru even though Chennai has more population than Bengaluru. Even Hyderabad has much less crime rate as compared to Bengaluru. While Delhi is really the Crime capital of India, Bengaluru has become Crime capital of South India. It seems shortly Bengaluru may overtake Delhi.

I was terribly shocked to hear of the brutal murder of Rev. Fr. K.J. Thomas. When I entered St. Peter's Pontifical Seminary way back in 1978, he was senior to me by six years. I have since known him. He was a man of affable nature. He was truly a man of principles, sincere to the core, quite simple, transparent and strictly accountable. I feel extremely sad for this good priest, for the diocese of Ooty and of course, for my great alma mater. We hope that there will be an impartial and proper enquiry held to bring to book the culprits who committed this dastardly act.

This shocking incident must have certainly created panic in the seminary. The state government should give protection to those who live at St. Peter's. May his soul rest in peace!

I have never even considered that he would not be the priest to preside over my future wedding, future kids baptisms etc. I cannot believe he is gone. He is such a nice and great man. I cannot even fathom how anyone could think to hurt him.

    RIP Thomachan Uncle.

You dedicated your life to God and it was ended so early because of some lost souls stupid greed. I also know you're in Heaven and praying for those ppl's souls b/c that's who you are. You will always be my favorite priest and I still can't believe you won't be presiding over my wedding, kids baptisms etc but I'm guessing you were such a great devotee to God that he decided your life of servitude on Earth was enough and it was time you reaped your reward in Heaven.
