Puttur: Girl taken to Kerala for conversion - advocate, five others arrested

Daijiworld Media Network  - Puttur

Puttur, Mar 3: Puttur notary, advocate and Dakshina Kannada district Congress minority unit chief secretary Nooruddin Salmar has been remanded in judicial custody for allegedly assisting in the conversion of a Hindu girl from Ankatadka, Paltady and helping his friends take her to Kerala.

Nooruddin was caught when he was trying to help Mohammed Althaf, the second accused in the case, to reportedly escape in his car. The Kasargod police arrested them near Perla. The prime accused in the case is Aziz, a poultry trader from Ankatadka.

The girl, a resident of Paltady, had left from her home on February 19 and escaped to Bellary. Aziz is said to have given the girl Rs 10,000 and asked her to convert to Islam. She was then taken to Kasargod by accused Rahiman, Mansoor and auto driver Manoj, and from there to Ponnani by train.

The girl then called Puttur rural police and informed them that she was in Ponnani. The girl's father filed a complaint in Puttur rural police station on February 21. It is said that Aziz and the girl had an affair, and after the family's intervention, it was decided that Aziz and the girl would not meet or talk to each other anymore.

Meanwhile, based on the information obtained on tracking the phone number the girl had called from, the Puttur rural police led by SI Jagadish Reddy under the direction of DySP Sadananda Warnekar left for Ponnani and brought the girl back. On the basis of her statement, the police filed complaints against Aziz, Rahiman, Mohammed Althaf, Mansoor and Manoj.

Though Nooruddin was only accused of helping the accused escape, investigations later revealed that he was the mastermind behind the plan to convert the girl, said DySP Sadananda.

Accused Aziz, Althaf and Nooruddin were taken for medical examination and produced in Puttur court. Puttur lawyers' association filed a bail plea for Nooruddin's release. B Narasimha Prasad and Mahesh Kaje argued on his behalf and said that Nooruddin should be granted interim bail as he was an advocate of the Puttur court.

Assistant public prosecutor C Thammana expressed a strong objection to the bail plea. He said interim bail can be granted to old people, patients and women but in this case interim bail cannot be granted to the accused.

Justice Venkatesh Nayak who upheld the decision of the public prosecutor, denied the bail and remanded the accused in judicial custody for 14 days. Along with Nooruddin, the court also awarded judicial custody to Azeez and Mohammed Althaf.

A few people objected to the photographers who were clicking pictures of the accused. Meanwhile police officials intervened and dispersed the crowd. Strong security was deployed in the court premises under the guidance of M Sudarshan, Puttur town police inspector and K Suresh Kumar, rural police circle inspector.

If it was marriage by mutual consent, then why was the girl taken to Kerala? Why didn't they get married in Puttur? Why should the respected advocate cum notary cum general secretary of a respected political party get himself involved in such clandestine activities? As a law abiding citizen, he should have directed them to a nearby Marriage Registrar's Office instead of secretly assisting them flee to a distant place.

First of all i want to know the exact age of the 'girl'. If she is major, then she must have been thought thousand times before leaving her home.
I agree love is blind. But man there are so many girls from poor families in both communities who crossed their wedding age and still their parents cant afford thier marriage. Leaders from both communities need to look in to this serious matter before supporting the so called inter-religion marriages.
And Mr. Dinesh poojary, Even Mr. Togadia is a doctor by profession and we all know what he did and what he is doing.

Wait for the next article with the correct age and intention of the whole group to travel to Kerala. The girl travelling to Kerala does not prove that she was taken for the conversion. This is the correct example of violation of human rights. A leading lawyer is treated like this without a proof but by the statements. The article nowhere shows what was revealed by the girl.
The police are blindly following and acting according to the tunes of the people who can gather by the rumors spread all over because the lawyer is a Muslim and one of his friend fell in love with a Hindu girl. There are upper courts who can listen to the actual story and I hope the lawyer will get a bail within tomorrow.

Also we have 'special marriage act ' in indian constitution , where partners of opposite faith can get married without convesrion ( hindu and muslim in above case ). Its valid and equal to nikah or hindu marriage. Why the conversion , if they like each other and can get marry with the above act. Its love which matters ...isn't it?!

Young men were forced to marry their beloved when they were spotted together in public places at Hyderabad and other parts of Andhra Pradesh and Indian police officers and constables were guests and just spectators- not a single person was arrested. But an adult girl who left her home with the support of her boyfriend to get marry became a very big issue.
Which marriage is lawful, the forced one OR the marriage with consent of both boy and girl? The word CONVERTION was pasted later to malign the minorities. Truth will come out soon, just wait and watch.

Conversion to any religion is one's constitutional right. Why it should bother others? It is Lawyer's duty to provide guidance in the best interest of his client. It doesn't make any sense to arrest the Lawyer and send him to Judicial custody.

I see people converting freely to the religion of their choice here in the United States. If Noorudin tells any of his client to go to US to get converted in order to avoid religious tension, should he be arrested? Nonsense. Go back to Law School.

i don't understand why the girls becoming innocent once they trapped in love case??? whoever girls not involving in such things are good? very very strange!!! its simple answer that once it becomes an issue, then girl(s)becoming innocent and the other one guilty!!! if the lawyer really involved in dis case, then its condemnable,if not i  pity on him...it will not be a big issue if the lawyer belongs to the same community as girl's.... as usual somebody don't want justice but violence....punish the guilty whoever it is...nyaya gellali...

This sounds purely a love affair. Conversion is legitimate only if she agrees to. Could be the girl agreed and later had a change of heart. Looks like the advocate is a scapegoat.

Now it is also hard for the girl to find a good alliance. I pity her parents.

Even if this is a love case forceful conversion should be condemned. If they really love let them marry and let them allowe to practice their own religion. Again the question is if the girl is so innocent how could she able to call police once she reached to ponnani and once the parents object and agreed to dis connect the contact how could it be poassible to ran away. There are may questions arise the genuiness of the case.
