Bantwal, Feb 27: A large number of people including party members from BJP, Congress and JD(S) gathered in front of taluk office at B C Road here on Wednesday February 27, demanding death penalty to the accused arrested in connection with Soumya’s attempted rape and murder.

Addressing the protest, MLA Ramanath Rai, "The fact that such an incident could take place that too in broad daylight is a matter of shame to the society. This gathering has been called in order create awareness among people. We need to put a stop to such kinds of incidents."

He also urged the government to allot some funds for the family of Soumya.

Former MLA Rukmaiah Poojary addressing the gathering asked lawyers not to fight the case in the favour of the accused. "In this regard an appeal will be sent to the bar council members," he said.

Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal condemned the incident and demanded death penalty to the accused. JD(S) Youth district president Krishnappa Poojary warned that the protest would continue till justice was delivered and strict action taken against the accused. He also urged public support for their protest.

Some locals who were part of the protest expressed fears that the case may be diluted by declaring the accused as mentally unstable.

After the protest, a memorandum was submitted to the government through the tahsildar demanding strict action on the case.

Chandraprakash Shetty, zilla panchayat member, Mamatha Gatti, MS Mohammed, Chennappa Kotian, Ananda Shambur, taluk panchayat vice-president, Dinesh Amtoor, Abbas Ali, Mayilappa Salian, B H Khader, Padmanabha Naringana, Mohan C S, Madhava Mave, Pushpavathi among others were present.

Janardhan Poojary raises Rs 1 lac for victim's family

Former union minister Janardhan Poojary visited Soumya's family on Wednesday and handed over Rs 1,10,000 collected from the district Congress party workers during a press meet in Mangalore. The entire amount was handed over to Soumya’s father Seetaram Purusha.

Speaking to reporters later, he condemned the cruel act and said that the incident had brought shame to the society. "I have already spoken to higher police officials pertaining to the matter so that the accused gets maximum punishment. We should see to it that such incidents do not recur," he said.

"Temple priests, church priests and mosque heads should work together to ensure that youth are not misguided and that they do not imbibe crude behaviour. Youth should treat women equally and with respect, and in this regard, the elders should guide them in the right direction," he said.

On the occasion, KPCC secretary Ashwani Kumar Rai, Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal, zilla panchayat member Chandraprakash Shetty, Panemangalore block Congress president Abbas Ali, P V Mohan among others were present.

Good Gesture.I know Mr Poojary's ability to help on the spot. He has done it on so many occasions and selflessly. Good to see all parties coming together for a cause. Hope they will unite also when the 'country' faces any emergency.

Whatever might be the gravity of the incident ( murder ), let political parties and the media not interfere into the episode. The media sometimes plays a good and bad role, many a times distorting the facts of the case. Politicians then play in these waters.Courts too could be influenced by distorted newspaper / media reports thereby delivering wrong judgments. Let us look at such matters responsibly.

I really can't imagine the height of INABILITY of our Local Government as well as whole lot of Political parties in this episode.
In a small village, it is impossible to believe that RAPISTS and MURDERERS are not known.
Fear of repercussions must be the reason for not exposing the offenders!
Fear at Individual level is understood, but fear in party level also? IT IS GOONDA RAJ!
What expectations common man can have from Governance then?

IN a country where 95% of Rapes are not reported and less than 10% of
those result in Conviction, harsh punishment will only lead to more
graft to police and Judiciary. It will not diminish rapes or violence
against women. First law should be to ban rape accused and criminals
    from gaining power.

Keeping aside my political views particularly against congress's reservation politics & in particular JP's efforts in advocating the same casetism/votebank politics, I would like to apprriciate Poojary's efforts in generating a fund from district party workers of congress to the needy family of Soumya which is the most priority deed of the hour.

No matter whatever is the political interest, am sure the beraved family would benifit financially atleast and help them to get back their life together after such a tragic loss which anyone would not want his worst enemy to go through.

At the same time if its true that the state Govt/local MLA/MP or anyone from BJP unit has not reached out to Soumya's family until now, its really shame on their existence. I hope the Govt propose & comitt to some economic package or under the exisiting schemes so atleast this family might live their lives in a resepctable manner without being a burden to the society.

As for people like us, for whom the god has blessed us to be able to help out atleast little bit by sharing from that allowance we waste on some small luxury in life like a rich food or shopping over the weekend to a needy in time family like late Soumya, then I dont think we deserve more respect than the politicians whom we chide nor there is a meaning to our life.

I Hope everybody does their bit, thats the least we can do now.

    Dear Sonal kn.Mangalore
Daiji has reported the crime early.Even newskarnataka.com also published the earlier news as well as Poojary's gesture seperately. It is not correct to assume that Poojary acted only after DW took the initiative. In fact this is not the first time Poojary is doing such type of charity work.He always helps the neeedy many time without any publicity. It is also not wise to despense with politicians in matters concerning sensitive issues like this. After all they too have heart.Let us be positive...think poistive...act positive..result will also be positive.
One important thing ...I am not a fan of any politicians in Mangalore or even in entire Karnataka.

If public expresses solidarity the real culprit could be booked within no time. These type of incidents should not happen again in our land DK.People should remain vegilent always and the parents of the girl child in particular.
Action by Sri Poojary raising Rs.1.10 lakh(10,000/- from his own fund)to help the deceased family is commendable.
