17 prisoners on death row in UAE freed, fly to India

Sharjah, Feb 12 (IANS) : Seventeen Indians who were on a death row in Sharjah prison were freed on Monday night and have since travelled to India.

The men were allowed to be freed after blood money (money paid as compensation to the victim's family) worth nearly Rs.5 crore was paid to the family of the Pakistani national Misri Khan.

They had been sentenced to death by a Shariat court in Sharjah March 2010. They were convicted of murdering Misri Khan and injuring three others January 2009, following a fight over illegal liquor business. Two other Pakistanis were injured in the clash which occurred in Al Sajaa area of Sharjah.

The returning men include 16 from Punjab and one from Haryana. All were working in UAE as labourers.

Dubai-based Indian hotelier S.P. Singh Oberoi, who led the campaign and collected money through charity and well-wishers to secure the release of the Indian men, said that the freed men will reach India early Tuesday.

After their arrival, the men are likely to offer prayers at the holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandar Sahib (popularly known as Golden Temple), in Amritsar before heading to their respective homes.

The Indian men had all along maintained that they were not involved in the murder of the Pakistani national and that they had been framed.

    Mr.Praveen,
For your information Indian Govt. did not pay, but good-willed Mr. Oberoi did. Indian Govt. has billions in Swiss Banks, but will never help the common Indian man.

In any case 17 people can not kill one person. Two or three might have killed the person, may be one of them inflicted the final injury, others could have been supporters. You can't give capital punishment to all of them.

May some people are jeaolus they disliked it. They are no the terrorists and there is no purpose for the murder. It's a murder, because of frustration and angerness. Good to hear they freed and back to India.

He would have raised money for worthy cause. As an Indian, I am really ashamed to hear this news. No one should help these criminals. If they are helped, people will think we encourage crimes and this might lead to more crimes. I believe in justice. These people did not kill a man for any noble cause.

They are posing as if they won 17 Olympic Gold Medals for India

These 17 Indians owe their life to Mr. Oberoi of Dubai Grand, who utilized his connections in both the Governments to set them free.

Why Indian Authority should pay the blood money and bring them back, remember they killed some one.if some one got killed by the car accident then it is an accident case. here it is purely criminal case. what if the victims family did not accept the blood money . then no one can help them, they will face the death penalty.
don't expect the government should interfere every case, who asked them to do crime. did they ask permission from the government of India .
