It's Official: Mangalore Airport Gets International Tag

Daijiworld Media Network

Mangalore/New Delhi, Oct 4: It is finally here. The long-cherished dream of scores of Mangaloreans was realized on Thursday October 4 with the official announcement of international status to Mangalore Airport.

The announcement in this regard was made by union finance minister P Chidambaram in New Delhi following a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCI).

Coimbatore, Trichy, Lucknow and Varanasi have also been granted the international airport status after the proposal came for approval before the union cabinet on Thursday.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCI), at its meeting in New Delhi, approved the proposal for the upgradation of the five airports which have the required infrastructure in place like large terminal, immigration and customs facility to handle international operations.

"These airports already have infrastructure like immigration and customs to handle the international operations. In fact some of them already do have some international flights. With this (decision) we expect that these airports will be able to attract more international flights and travellers," P Chidambaram said after the meeting.

An international airport is one that can accommodate international flights that requires separate layers for immigration and customs including high end facilities at the terminal like aerobridges and mandatory runway length to accommodate jets.

With the approval, the long pending demand of Mangaloreans will become a reality and the international tag would give an impetus to tourism and the overall development of the city.

Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde deserves a special mention as he has been consistently and relentlessly pursuing the matter, together with union minister for corporate affairs Dr M Veerappa Moily.

Conversion of a domestic airport into an international airport means creation of more standardized immigration facilities. The international tag would also mean that the airport would be open to foreign airlines and more facilities would be available to the passengers.

Reacting to the news of the approval of the international tag Airport Director M R Vasudeva who will be retiring by the end of October pointed out “it is the parting gift given to me and the people of this district by my department. We have been trying very hard for this tag for the last so many years ever since international type of facilities was made available at the Mangalore Airport in May 2006. I am happy that all our efforts have borne fruit”.

He also stated that the new tag would entail more international passenger inflow and Mangalore will be viewed in a different angle henceforth.

J P Hegde Welcomes Move

Speaking exclusively to Daijiworld, MP Jayaprakash Hegde expressed his happiness and said that the move would benefit people of the coastal region who are working abroad.

The international status to the airport has brought a new dimension to its operations and within October Ajith Singh will inaugurate, he said.

He said the cabinet has also put forward a proposal to build an airport at Ottinene in Byndoor as per the requirement of the people. In this regard a meeting was also hold with Jagadish Shettar, he said. The minimum distance between two airports (150 km) is also fulfilled as the distance between Ottinene and Bajpe is 150 km.

"If the proposal of Ottinene airport is sanctioned in the cabinet, people from Dakshina Kannada to Kumta will be benefitted," he said.

WHO WILL REMOVE THE CORRUPT CUSTOMS OFFICIALS AT MANGALORE AIRPORT. EACH TIME I TRAVEL, I SEE THESE OFFICIALS HARASSING TRAVELLERS FOR MONEY. ONE INSTANCE WAS A POOR LABOURER WAS CARRYING 2 LITRES OF ALCOHOL AND SUDDENLY ONE OF THE CUSTOMS GUY DEMANDS MONEY FROM THIS LABOURER. A FEW OF US BYSTANDERS SHOUTED AT THE CUSTOMS STAFF TO LEAVE HIM ALONE. ONLY THEN DID THEY LEAVE HIM. MY BLOOD WAS BOILING LOOKING AT THIS INCIDENT. ANOTHER TIME WHEN I WAS TRAVELLING HOME FROM DUBAI, THE CUSTOMS OFFICIAL TELLS ME YOU CANNOT CARRY THIS GOLD AND HAVE TO PAY A FINE OF 15000 INR. I YELLED BACK SAYING THIS IS THE GOLD WORN BY MY WIFE SINCE YEARS. I HAD TO ARGUE WITH THIS A** AND ONLY THEN WAS I LET GO. THE POLICY OF THESE CUSTOMS  IS DIVIDE AND RULE. ALL OF US HAVE A MENTALITY WHERE WE LOOK AFTER OUR OWN BENEFIT AND DO NOT BOTHER TO HELP A CO TRAVELLER SAYING " YENK DAAYE" WILL SOMEONE TAKE NOTICE OF WHATS HAPPENING AT MLORE AIRPORT?

Naturally when BJP MP's raised the voice the ruling Congress kept silence, & now once Congress MP's raised voice, the action took place. Hats of to all MP's irrespective of parties who initiated their efforts in making Mangalore International Airport. All MP's please pressurise the Central Govt. to provide best of Safety Standards for landing in this Airport, also for developing the Exit Road downhill, & extention of Runway to the possible extent.

Thousands of our people from Mangalore, Udupi, other parts of Coastal Karnataka, Northern parts of Kerala including Kasaragod, and people from our surrounding districts are working in Gulf countries, UK, USA, Canada and some other countries throughout the world. Now this is a good relief for all these NRIs and their families.

Now the like minded people or Organizations can do follow ups for direct flights for Mangalore/GCC sectors and other feasible Sectors with airlines like Jet airways, Air Arabia, Air Lanka, Qatar Airways, Emirate Airlines, Oman Airways and some other ed airlines.

Thanks to the efforts of Central Minister Sri Veerappa Moily, Sri J.P. Hegde-MP and Airport Director Shri Vasudev. Thanks also goes to individuals and Organizations have been working behind the screen.

Requesting the authorities that Priority has also to be given for the direct flights to Mangalore / Saudi Arabia sectors as large number of Mangalorean based passengers are working there next only to Dubai.

You can trust the Congress Party / UPA. If left to the BJP we would never have had this tag. Thanks UPA Govt.

Refering to the facilities already available at the Airport, the luggage takes a very long time to come unlike in other airports.Something has to be done regarding this.It is a frustrating wait to get your luggage.I think the luggage conveyor system is obsolete.

The parking fee of Rs 40/- per car is too much for more than 10 minutes.

The airport deparure / arrival flyover has been monopolised by taxiwalas. They park their cars right through the driveway making it difficult to either pick or pax's.The airport police should take action against this mafia. The airport manager Mr.Vasudeva has turned a blind eye towards this menace.

I hope this status may be be a becon for good days to come for commutors who fly out international from IXE, especially for Gulf passengers who had to rely only on AI-Ex. Its time for Indian players like Jet, Spicejet & Indigo to take a piece of the cake ASAP before some foreighn players takes the best piece(timings). As of now, he only international player we can expect to land in Mlore is Fly Dubai with their B-737's. Emirates or Etihad may not be able to operate Mlore even with their smallest of aircraft with our exisiting runway. So its a good chance for local carriers.
ISMAIL.K.PERINJE BHAI..what is this, i know you are very exited but come on you have taken IXE to London Heathrow range man. What is it City bus stand ?. We dont have runway to land a Aircraft more than A-320(Safely), Washington-Washing Machine is of long way. The aircrafts may have to have 25 stopovers. You cant land down to pick just one or 2 passengers per week. Anyways practically speaking I dont see much traffic from mlore except for Gulf sectors. Atleast something is better than nothing. Good for Gulfies. Time to get rid of Soaked Vadas, Fungus cheese Sandwich, Microwave Pulao & near expiry orange juice all served by "Thinjarda jeppule" attitude Cabin Crew.

Since 03 October, 2006 when AI express started their maiden IXE DXB flight, we never thought this will take such a long time to get an int'l tag to IXE airport. Anyhow, hard efforts, constant follow up from NRI Forum, strong our won Daiji Media and also least bothered DK politicians has done good job for Not Required Indians. It is a reality, at last NRI fellow brtohers from KSA also immediately benefited. Congratulations to you all.

Well, finally mangalore airport got the international tag. That's fine. However please don't imagine flights west bound beyond gulf sector. And the east bound, may be one, air asia connecting singapore via kualalumpur. That's all about the international destinations.
B-737-700ER & A-319LR can be used in trans-pacific flights. But they are not so economical, considering the number of passengers they carry.

We wanted International Airport we worked very hard who ever it may be but we should salute Sree Veerappa Moily and Sree JP Hegde Sir, Daiji World for creating awareness and we should not forgetSree Rajesh Sequeira who was an instrumental vibe, Its the victory of Udupi and Mangalore Districts = Undivided district suits most. Add the unity extract the communal hate-rates, retrench those fanatics from all communities. Mangalore and Udupi will be great touristic place with Arabian Sea on one side and the western Ghats on other, with unlimited religious places for all religions including Jains and Bhudists and authentic food.

Now Oscar will try to take credit for this, same like he was trying to take credit for the customs chnage of attitude earlier.
Wish he had done one good thing for coastal karnataka, where people could say, this was done because of the efforts of Oscar.
    Useless talking about it.

J.P. Hegde is the right choice made by Chik!udupi.
He has been busy with peoples' requirement unlike any other peoples' representative.
I hope he will be recognised for further elevation in political circle.

Now people of DK/UK/Udupi/Chikmangalur/Hassan/Kodagu/Shimoga and some part of North Karnataka people can directly land in Mangalore from foreign countries as Mangalore will be nearer to them.

The tag of the new pier marks a further milestone for Mangalore Airport and secures long-term development opportunities in an extremely competitive growth market. Mangalore Airport serves not only as our gateway to the middle-east, but also is a renowned international calling card for the City of Mangalore and the rest of the State. But how long we will be able to sustain this new Tag? With a whole lot of corrupt customs officer, Mafia's running the taxi service and parking service. We need more clones of JAYAPRAKASH HEGDE, God give you excellent health and fill you with energy, so that you can continue your good work to the society.

Its a good news. Mangaloreans are thrilled to hear the news. There is one small request. There is no easy access to the airport. The approach road is very steep. Only vehicle owners can use it. There is need to locate alternate route to the airport. Will the authorities apply their mind and solve the problem?
