DVS please stop your plan to extract some extra mileage from renaming the airport against which we have high degree of attachment. Name can be changed easily. Your contribution is required to improve the facilities and the safety of the airport. Where were you when our airport was not given the international flight landing status?

My request to Daiji is to kindly get into some investigative journalism to report as to why no other airline is allowed to land in our beloved airport. This is the need of the hour, otherwise, AIE will swindle poor passengers and take us for a royal ride as always.

If any dirty lobbying game is being played by anybody, we need to form a counter strategy to anyhow bring in new airlines to land at Bajpe.

    Dear readers,

The airline passengers travelling to Mangalore may be in the future have to carry GPS if it is named after "Yellapa".The name goes if it is in Bijapur.
Mr.S.D.Gowda do not boughter about name focus on International status and amenities within the airport.Reduce airport taxes, get more landing rights and compensation to Air India flight victims. We Mangaloreans pay exorbitant fare comparing to rest of other states for the same distance.

Mr.C.M.nothing has improved even after the name changes to Bangaluru,Mumbai or Chennai.

@ The GURU haha!! You sit in switzerland and comment on a Hijada country to attack our country are you that TERRORIST plannin somethinG???
@Dinesh Poojary, Rakesh, Mohandas Kapikad, Don Amnon - I know you are all good with your history on names of Freedom Fighters I respect them BUT HELLO!! DID YOU FORGET WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE AIRPORT NOT THE HISTORY of our fighters there are many fighters we cant go on naming the airport and it will be as long as our INDIAN RAILWAY LINE!And also MANGALORE is the name of the place which people hardly know and I know of people who still call it BANGALORE!!! and you want to change it to a name!! one place which gives little recognition to our Native ?? What is wrong with you people!!!
@ Nagesh Nayak- Man you are a PSEUDO!!!
@Vijay, Eulalia, Gladson- I agree with ya'll please DVS stop your DEVIOUS ideas on our place and make some real improvements. Like
    1. Comparison - Kerala Tourism is off the charts why they just promote and encourage tourism - OUR GOVT. MANGALORE TOURISM DEPT. I HAVE TO BUY BROUCHERS!!!FOR PROMOTION WELL THEY DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH BROUCHERS
    2. There is an airport coming up in Kannur. So i think it's wise to Start up more Flights on the Int'l Route than giving permission to ONLY your SICK AIR INDIA EXPRESS GOVT. fleet.!!!
    3. The road towards the Airport has been in Half a pathetic state for the last Decade and I feel embarrassed to tell the Foreign passengers who have visited it previously that well IT WAS STILL UNDERWAY THEN AND IS NOW!!!
4.The name is Immaterial, the staffing, the interior and the little details, rent to shop owners to attract more shops in the airport and fill up the empty gaps in the gaps filled only with AIR!!
These are a few requirements for which DVS you need to DEVIATE your attention to rather than go to change the name of our AIRPT

Shri Yellappa and other revolutioneries did not get their due recognition in our country so far, because they opposed the cowardly attitude of Nehru and Co.

The British rulers left this country not only because of the freedom struggle by Gandhians, but also due to many factors including the struggle by the revolutioneries like Sarvarkar, Chandrashekhara Azad and Bhagath Singh.

Unlike Nehru, the revolutioneries sacrificed everything for the sake our motherland.

The people who denigrate Yellappa and others should not remain here as they are always a threat to our country.

I hope days are coming close when some other HIJJADA country will come and conquer India, since most of the Indians are partiotic either to other country or either to thier religion and very few will fight for our nation like Yellappa.

Sir Yellappa may be your name will be given to the airport or not, but u will be in my heart forever for ur freedom struggle and also to the free medical treatment provided to the Needy without seeing any caste, creed or religion.

I have a question to all the people who consider this Yellappa a great freedom fighter.Perhaps he was,but most people do not know him.I have a lot of respect for Netaji Bose since he was a true patriot and his intentions were honest. But he and his army did collaborate with Germans and with the Japanese in the war in Burma. So the question is: If the National Army had succeeded in beating the British with the help of Germans and Japan, would India be a free country thereafter or a colony of Japan? (Barring the fact that Japan was beaten by the Americans later). So why is this Yellappa greater than Gandhi?

I agree with Ahmed,Mangalore/Doha. Kerala is now planning a tourist airport in Kasargod to attract more tourists to the Baikal Fort.It may not be international, but a good begining.Let us look at the state in Karnataka: We do not have even a second international airport. Such a big tourism city like Mysore does not even have a functioning airport (just an empty building called airport).Great tourism spots like Hampi and Badami (which have hundred times more tourism potential than Kasargod) have no airports closeby. Is this the state of our "development"? Instead of worrying about naming the airport let us worry about why other states in the South are moving way ahead of our state in terms of tourism. Oh, who is/was our minister of tourism again?

This DVS seems to be full of devious schemes. Otherwise, why would anyone stir a issue into controversy which is not there at all? Please you DV please don’t play politics even in naming an airport. Who the hell is this Yell ? And what connection does he have or had with Mangalore? Why do you create unnecessary controversy and divide people? If there is no consensus ok, forget it, just keep the name as it is. Rather try to improve the services of the Airport. First of all what have you done towards making it into an Int’l airport? Stupid DV.

For that matter, our former Yeddappa is much better I feel. At least he will not bother with these silly issues as he would be too busy making personal money by looting mines, land grabbing, de-notification, visiting temples and donating tax payers’ money and throwing stones at Churches ! He is better off.

The airport must remain Mangalore Airport, preferably Mangalore Int’l Airport.

Dear Hon. CM, with due respect to you & all concerned in this issue. My point is after all " What does the name matter''?? Instead of CM announcing name change, wish he could do some betterment of the facilities at the airport and other infrastructure concerning our city. How long, how often will you keep changing city names, airport names as per your wims n fancies? Just b'coz you attend a programe in honour of " Yellappa" that is not " Ella appa" ( that's not the end of it..) you have better things to do as our CM.
Like KR Prabhu has rightly mentioned, we have many more people who are worth having their names carved in the city. But it is not possible. Lets be realistic in life & concentrate with need of the hour -basic infratructure, good roads every where, drinking water facility, proper power supply, streamline education system etc etc..!!!!list goes on.. Give better facilities for Tourism Infrastructure..

With due respect to our Freedom Fighters & their families, I think CM should think more concrete than these silly matters.
Lighter side of it : we the Travel & Airline Industry personnel will have a tough time to manage with long, longer, still longer airport names...!!

Readers who want to know who is Yellappa, please go to Thokkottu & just before crossing to Ullal, you can find a hospital just left side of NH in the name of Nethaji Yellapa Memorial Hospital. It has been there since two & half decade, & our foolish readers who are more familiar to Nehruji-Indraji-Rajiviji-Soniaji-Rahulji, might not have noticed it or might have had blind eye towards this name.
Naturally, Centernary Year comes once in 100 years & not frequently.. & so now the matter is raised. Forget Yellapa, the Nehru family has over years suppressed other freedom fighters of its own colleage as Sardar Patel, Lal Bahadur Shastri, besides Subhas Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Thilak. Names of freedom fighters are projected as to see only Nehru family & Gandhiji, & less importance is given to others.

Tippu Sulthan was a ruler & not a freedom fighter. He fought to protect his soverginty & not freedom of nation. Whereas, Subhas Chandra Bose who was founder of Indian National Army, fought for the liberty of the land.
It is this Indian National Army that is still in existence today & protecting the nation. And for everyone to remember, the Nehru hirearhy has accumulated good deposits in SwissBank, while others like Subhas Chandra Bose, or Yellapa, Lal Bahadur Shastri or so, have sacrificed their assets to nation. more or less a service then selfishness. If suggestion for Mangalore Airport would be Rajiv or Indira, most readers would be in praise, but when it is suggested with name of Yellapa, ther are unable to digest, & they are ommitting their fealings. Jai Hind........

Basrrister Attavara Yellappa International Airport! Name of the airport would be longer than the runway at the Mangalore airport. If you want to name this airport by Yellappa's name because he was a freedom fighter, then I too have a claim. My Great-Grandfather too was a freedom fighter and he too was 'Appa' for my grandfather. So why not name airport as 'Inasappa International Airport? If anyone asks who Inasappa is, please tell he was a freedom fighter. Whether you name it Yellappa, Yedyurappa, Eshwarappa, Huchappa or Berchappa, how different the airport and the facilities at the airport would be than what exist now? Let me reiterate my earlier views on the same subject. Someone wants it to be named after Rani Abbakka while the other wants it to be named after Srinivas Mallya,

One more wants it as Tulunadu Airport and no wonder after some years one more will want the airport to be named as DVS Gowda Airport. There was no one even bothered about the airport and the happenings over there when for years together it was in doldrums, hanging often between the worst and bad. Now that the airport has seen changes, international flights have been introduced, everyone wants a piece from the cake! The persons who have toiled directly and indirectly to make this airport what it is today, are still thinking about further developments. But the persons, who have not contributed even a bit, even when it was possible to them, are trying to hog the limelight now? Instead of using your influence in changing the name of the airport, use it for the betterment of airport, to increase facilities for the passengers, to rehabilitate those who have been displaced, to construct and maintain good roads and if possible to turn it into complete International airport. At least people will remember this contribution of yours. Which is important right now? Renaming the airport or maintaining and furthering the development and good things that are happening at the airport?

If at all Sriman Yellappa is living, he will die of shame - for giving his life and personal life for such unworthy people of a nation called India. He would surely not like the idea of naming the airport after him. He would more likely fight for a better airport first and then fade away.. this is what fighters do !!

What's in a name? A rose is always a rose is what Shakespeare said. Places always tend to retain their original names despite spending huge amounts in for such unwanted projects. Mumbai Airport is still called Bombay Int'l Airport by the general public despite changing its name to Chatrapati Shivaji In'l Airport. Even New York airport in the U.S. is called after the name of the city and not as J.F.Kennedy Int'l Airport. Likewise Mangalore Airport will always remain as Mangalore or Bajpe Airport. Renaming will only change the signboards. But let the Government ensure that no undue expenditure is involved in such non-developmental project.

First, let us make sure that the airport will be a proper airport with international status and a proper road leading to and from it.Right now it looks like a jungle airport road.

secondly,if we really want a name there may be many from Mangalore or undivided DK: K.Sadashiva Rao,Srinivasa Mallya,Shivarama Karanth,TMA Pai etc.If you want to go back in history, why not Mangala Devi or Koti Chennaya? Why this unknown Yellappa name?

    Presh Mehta/A'bad.

You are blind and are influenced by the RSSs perverted ideologies. I can feel the stench of hate in your comments. RSS is full of ideologies against minorities. Now to your convenience you call taj mahal as Tejo mahalaya just to fool public. Shahjahan built this monument in memory of his dead wife Mumtaz and named it as Mumtaz Mahal and when british came they nick named it as Taj mahal as Mumtaz was too long for them... Shahjahan was sent to jail by his own son for misuing public funds.. Even I have read in your RSS books that Taj was built by Rana Pratap Singh...There has never been a temple in the place of Taj as claimed by you saddists.. At that time, there was no scarcity of land and you claim that muslim rulers destroyed 30000 temples and built mosques... Can you name 100 such temples??? NO you cant...U r good in spreading hate and venom...With the policy of venom and hate, you are going back to be ruled again by british and mughals...Tomorrow you may claim that Mecca is built by your Sankaracharya... Hypocrisy at its height......U take Nathruam Godse with you and name Ahmedbad airport in his name and include his name and deeds as role model in next years curriculum... Stop spreading venom and hate..before the same venom and hate engulfs you and you are lost in the flame of hate...

All wealth is looted already. Now planning to loot our airport too.. Thank god Airport was given to Private Sector for construction or else even there would be pits on the run way...

Even Taj Mahal once Tejo Mahalaya - a Shiva Temple. Mughals have destroyed all evidence according to there needs. Even Britishers tried to change concept of Hinduism - a ancient religion. Many of records destroyed as and when attacked by other's - still India retain glory of it's past.

We need Airport to be named after Late Shri Yellappaji. Don't worry shortly it will also include in next curriculum. Good thing always remain same after many years also.

It is in right spirit to name the Mangalore international airport with a freedom fighter who had worked for Bharat's (India's) freedom from overseas/international level. If people of Mangalore or for that matter Karnataka or the whole country had never heard the name of revolutionary freedom fighter Yellappa and many such freedom fighters name, it is the government and the historians and the media to be blamed. Most of the revolutionary freedom fighters came to be known only during 1998-2004. Mangalore airport should be ideally named after Yellappa, besides releasing of a postal stamp, and naming of other land marks like a flyover, ring road and establishment of a chair at Mangalore university among others. His achievements should also be included in the text books

I fully endorse the statement here made by Shanavaz Kukkikatte. My self and many like me hither to never heard of the name Attavara Yellappa. Why the name of this great patriot was not made known to the students yet.All of a sudden, announcement by our CM to name the Mangalore air port after Attavara Yellappa makes no sense and the step is in haste mixing politics in it.
Karnad Sadashiva Rao was a staunch Gandhian and known as Gandhi of the South being great freedom fighter and social reformer as well.He had made great contribution for the upliftment of the socially back ward class people in so many ways being member of "Mission for Depressed Classes" He gave up his legal profession for the sake of participation in freedom struggle and lost every thing for the sake of his mission. It will be a fitting tribute to name the Mangalore air port after this great son of Dakshina Kannada.
Alternatively, there is another suitable choice to name the Mangalore airport.i.e., Late Ullal Srinivas Mallya,a three time MP from Udupi constituency. He too was a great freedom fighter and close associate of Jawaharlal Nehru. He is known as father of modern Dakshina Kannada comprising Udupi and Mangalore.Today whatever we see around Mangalore by way of developments is because of Late Sri Ullal Srinivas Mallya's vision. His visionery contributions to DK are:
    1.Mangalore-Bangalore National highway
    2.Mangalore-Mumbai NH
    3.Circuit house,Mangalore
    4.Town hall Mangalore
    5.KREC,Suratkal(now NITK)
    6.New Mangalore Port,Panambur
    7.Bajape airport
    8.Ullal bridge across river Nethravathi
    9.Mangalore Hassan Bangalore railway line
    10.All India Radio station Mangalore
We have great respect and regards for Yellappa's contrubution as a freedom fighter.Let us be prudent and reasonable when it comes naming of Mangalore Airport.

I still like the way Tippu Sultan fought with British. Even the Maratas and Nizaams betrayed him, he fought and died for the Mother land, his children were captivated. Yet no Airport under his name.

    Dear DW..
Very good coverage given on barrister Yellapa. It is sad and pity that present generation know very little about this great freedom fighter from Mangalore. naming airport or some main road would be fitting tribute from present generation. Also I request education department to include his name and his works in history and kannada books along with other great martyrs of India. Really proud of Barrister Yellapa and his abilities to muster youth into the INA, Indian National Army. More so, he wanted to set up largest Bank of the world during 1940's and started Hind bank, and collected Rs 30 crores from people then !! If Nataji had so much trust in Barrister, that he sent him to Singapore and Thailand to provide leadership, I assume Yellapa to be a great fighter like Veer Bhagat Singh... We sincerely need to learn more about this humble fighter and dedicate to his memory landmarks, else we will be wasting a valient soldier's blood and next generation will be lost for words when Barrister Attavar Yellapa's name is mentioned. We need to think twice before we change the present name of the Airport as it may have unfavourable consequence on our International claim. Instead we can rename some building or flyover or traffic circle (roundabout) or bus stop or finally even KSRTC etc.
