Mangalore, Apr 17: In a major development in hospital city of Mangalore, doctors in Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte have created history by doing PCNL on a two year old child.

According to Dr Altaf Khan, consultant urologist at the hospital, the child was presented with recurrent urinary tract infection to paediatric surgeon Dr Ashraf Ahmed. On investigation, she was found to have stones in her left kidney. After doing the necessary pre-operative investigations, the child was planned for an operative procedure called as Per Cutaneous Nephro Lithotripsy (PCNL).

In PCNL, a key hole of size 5 mm is made in back in the region of kidney and the stones are removed after fragmenting with a lithoclast under direct vision using a telescope. The child sustained the procedure well. This procedure is normally carried out in adults. But in paediatric age group, it requires skill and special miniature instruments which is presently available at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangalore.

Dr Altaf Khan, in association with Dr Ashraf Ahmed, carried out this sophisticated procedure backed by an expert team of anaesthesiologist headed by Dr Suranjit Sorake.

In a press release, medical superintendent Dr Moosabba said that kidney stones, although rare, are in a rise in children and it is necessary to take appropriate treatment at the right time to save the kidneys from being damaged by the stones.
