Sri Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya, the great saint spread and propagated Sanathana Dharma and Advaitha philosophy. Sri Edneer Mutt belongs to the parampara of Sri Thotakacharya, one of the first four disciples of Sri Adi Shankaracharya and follows Smartha Bhagawatha tradition of Advaitha Pantha which has more than 1200 years of glorious history of religion, culture, art, music and social service.
Sri Edneer mutt is situated by the side of river Madhuvahini in the serene surroundings of Edneer village, Kasargod District, which was a Kannada Region, now is in Kerala State. The present peetadhipathi His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Keshavananda Bharathi Mahaswamiji is performing Trikala Pooja and Upasana of Dakshina Murthy and Sri Gopala Krishna, the presiding deities of the mutt and blesses devotees for their health, peace of mind and happy long life and guides his followers from all parts of the globe since the last 50 years.
Sri. Vishnumangala and Kana Sri.Shastara Temples at Edneer, Sri.Mahishasura Mardini at Ajjavara, Sri Kadumane Vanadurga Temple, Sri Krishna Temple at Bagalore are under the management of Sri Mutt.
Sri Sri Sri Keshavananda Bharathi Swamiji is spreading the religion and culture in equal earnest. His Holiness also renders all possible support to literature, culture and art. His Holiness is a great Carnatic and Hindusthani vocalist and master of all sections of Yakshagana, the renowned art form and also has penned many devotional songs and dramas.
His Holiness has taken much pain to save and propagate Kannada language, Education, art and culture in Kasargod District and has taken up a number of initiatives. Under his guidance, the mutt has instituted a Kannada Medium School, a Junior college and also Vidyamandira English Medium School at Edneer. The mutt also operates a Sanskrit Veda Patashala and conducts a number of Cultural and art festivals every year.
The country has been ever indebted to His Holiness for the land mark battle he successfully fought in the Supreme Court against the encroachment by the state upon the fundamental rights of citizens ( AIR 1973 SC 1461 His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Kesavananda Bharati v. The State of Kerala and Others).
His holiness took sanyasa at the age of 19 years and has been heading the mutt for the last 50 years as Peetadhipathi of Sri Edneer Mutt. To commemorate this epic journey, it has been endeavored by the devotees and followers to celebrate the Peetarohana Suvarna Mahotsava on 2nd and 3rd January 2011 at Sri Edneer Mutt, Edneer, Kasargod in grand and befitting manner. The Organising committee plans to perform Yagas, Pravachanas, Anna Santharpane, a procession and concluding ceremony with Rajatha Thulabharam (in Silver) along with cultural programs. The mahotsavam is estimated at around Rs. 60 Lakhs and the proceeds from the Thulabharam is intended to be used towards Educational and other Community development programs.
The Mahotsava will be graced by His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Mahaswamigal of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, Sri Sri Sri Vishweshwara Theertha Mahaswamiji of Sri Pejavara Mutt, Udipi, Sri D. Veerendra Hgde, Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala Sri Manjunatha Temple and many dignitaries of all walks of life.
