Dr Alphonse D'Souza, SJ (77), bishop of Raiganj, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Bishop's House in Raiganj.

Alphonsus was born on July 4, 1939 as the seventh child of (the late) Emmanuel (Monnu Master) and Magdalene D’Souza of Kattingeri, Moodubelle parish. After completing primary and higher primary education in the Church school, Moodubelle, Alphonsus proceeded to St Mary’s High School, Shirva for further education where he completed SSLC in 1956. Alphonsus went to Mangaluru to continue PUC education at St Aloysius College.

After the completion of PUC in 1957, Alphonsus went for novitiate studies at St Stanislaus College, Sitagarha, Hazirbagh in 1957.

Br Alphonsus was ordained priest on July 13, 1971 in Augsburg, Germany. He was appointed bishop of Raignaj, West Bengal on February 4, 1987.

His religious life has been an example of spirituality, academic work, administrative responsibility, social service and Episcopal calling.

Funeral will be held in Raigunj on Tuesday May 3, 2016.

RIP! A true soldier of Christ!
In 29 years he increased parishes by 5 folds(made then economically independent) and priests by 11 folds. Besides English and Latin he was proficient in German, French, Italian, classical Greek and Hebrew, and several Indian languages. He had published articles along with pope Francis in Germany few decades ago. He was hoping to visit his family at native after 12 years in Dec 2016.
