Bengaluru, Jan 20: A reduction of school fees by 25% to 30% has been recommended to the government by the department of public instruction for the current year. The department submitted a report on the matter and a final order on the same is likely to be issued in a day or two.

“There is also a recommendation that the schools, which have collected full fees from parents for this academic year, should adjust the same during the next year’s fees following the government order," a report by DH stated.

Further, primary and secondary education minister Suresh Kumar also conducted discussions on the matter with concerned officials.

“Some parents have already paid the full fee. For such parents, the schools must give concessions during the next year of the same percentage recommended by the government for this year. At the same time, there are schools which have already considered parents plights and reduced the fees up to 30% and for such schools, this fee cut won’t apply." officials in the department of public instruction said.

Yogananda, secretary, RTE Students and Parents’ Association, said, “We had requested the department to fix a slab and reduce fees based on the number of admissions. For example, we said no fee concession is needed for schools with less than 250 students and for schools charging Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 we have requested for 10% cut in the fees.â€

This seems a gimmick. The minister is giving such statement to please the parents. Then, in reality why did they pay full salary to the aided as well as govt. employed teachers ? Let the govt. support the private school teachers, non-teaching staff and drivers of the school bus. Many teachers availed bank loans to repay from their monthly salary. Some of the school management paid half salary and some nothing. The statement should read as 25 to 30% reduced not in salary but in school syllabus.

Playing to the gallery. Even if the schools agree to this, the will recover the same in the next two years and govt will do nothing about it.

Parents should understand that school has to pay their teaching as well as non-teaching staff irrespective the situation. Vehicle maintenance/fuel expenses might have been saved but drivers has to be paid. Hope this announcement will resolve the fee issue. School management should pay the salaries of staff in full for the complete academic year which they deducted during the Covid time..

Teachers and staff should come openly to say whether they got full pay. Teachers that I have spoken to, were not happy because their pay is reduced to 50%. Some, did not get paid at all, for over six months.

Classrooms empty, electricity/water not used, cleaning staff terminated - what has the administration done with the full fee ?

it is other way around. Parents are not willing to pay the fees in many schools in Udupi district. Recently, in one of the meeting, parents are questioning why they have to pay the fees since children are not attending the classes. True, there is no electricity or water consumption but major portion is fees goes to the salary of staff. It is also the responsibility of the parents to demand the School management to make 100% payment to staff when the pay the fees or else management will take the advantage because teachers are afraid of loosing their job, if they speak publicly.
