Congress continues demand to rename Mangaluru International Airport after Koti Chennaya

Mangaluru, Nov 20: Continuing the demand of renaming Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) after Adani Group took over the management of the airport, district Congress demanded the airport to be named after legendary Tuluva twin heroes Koti Chennaya.

Addressing the media here on Friday November 20, district Congress president Harish Kumar said, "Congress has always kept the demand of renaming MIA after Koti Chennaya. Four years ago, a decision was taken on this at Malavoor gram panchayat, moved to zilla panchayat, which was brought to the notice of the state government. When I questioned about the above proposal during the March session, the answer I got was that there were no such proposals.

"On May 26, 2020, a circular was sent to the deputy commissioner on renaming four airports including Mangaluru which says the proposal was examined. The operating and maintenance of Belagavi, Mangaluru and Hubballi airports then came under the limits of Airport Authority of India, while Bidar airport under the limits of GMR Hyderabad. Hence, the renaming of the airport does not relate to the government.

"When a local authority places a proposal, it has to be moved to the state government cabinet where it can be rejected or sent to the central government. This is a procedure that has to be followed,” he said.

Earlier, district BJP president had stated that MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had sent a proposal of renaming the airport in 2012, for which Harish said, "If Nalin had sent such a proposal, where is the document? What has happened in eight years? We do not want another Pumpwell flyover to happen. GST and demonetisation was implemented overnight, then what is the problem to rename Mangaluru airport after Koti Chennaya?” Harish Kumar questioned.

Countering BJP's claim of Congress indulging in caste politics, Harish Kumar said, "Congress need not play caste politics. BJP is exemplary in caste politics. BJP has formed development corporations of all castes, and nearly 20 such corporations are formed but has no office bearers. Such moves are taken only for political mileage. Congress has always been treating everyone equally.

“Congress took up Brahmashree Narayana Guru study chair at Mangalore University (MU), observing Narayana Guru Jayanti, taking up development of Padumale Koti Chennaya and Deyi Baidethi medicinal garden and provided funds for these works.

"When Modi arrived to Mangaluru during elections, he had said that Gujarat and Mangaluru have good bonding as they buy arecanut from the district. We were happy that our district farmers will be empowered with this move. Instead, Modi had his eye on the airport which was sold to Adani Group. Even the replica of 'Pilinalike' was sidelined, which was relocated to its original place after the efforts of Mithun Rai.

"The airport is given to Adani just for maintenance and not for gaining authority. The tender should have been for 30 years, but in this case, it is for 50 years which is a clear violation," Harish Kumar said.

When asked about Nalin putting efforts on renaming the airport as stated by district BJP president, district Youth Congress president Mithun Rai said, "We have seen the efforts of Nalin Kumar Kateel in Pumpwell flyover construction which took 10 years. He lacks will power in renaming the airport. Nalin had also said that he did not notice the Adani board. The MP travels taking flight from the airport and yet does not see the board which is either not possible or sheer ignorance."

Corporator Shashidhar Hegde, Anil Kumar, district Congress spokesperson A C Vinayaraj, MCC opposition leader Abdul Rauf and others were present.

So disappointing a trend that emrges from congress too of naming and renaming! Its no different than trying to catch up with BJP. How does it help making people life easy? How many jobs will it generate renaming? Is renaming a burnig issue that needs to be resolved lest we all drown? Come on guys! Get on the street and together we start focus and work on ground issues like fixing the roads, a few small scale industries, start ups,

In the recent times mangaloreans/mangalorean politicians are worried more about keeping names to roads, bus stand, airport etc and not development. First improvement should be done in Mangalore International Airport not keeping new names. Also politicians should try to improve infrastructure in the city. See other cities how it is developing and we mangaloreans are still busy ready history books and worried more about keep new names.

Why are politicians giving importance to renaming of the airport when the roads of mangalore and udupi are unsafe for a female to walk after sunset. I was walking through the DC office road in manipal and two guys started following me and tried to touch me and I’m sorry to say these guys were locals talking in tulu. I wasn’t able to note down the vehicle number because it was too dark but I did try to call the concerned authorities but they didn’t help. Few of my friends have also gone through the same situation. If any person who has power to do something about this is reading my comment please try to help us get through this situation. I’ve not stepped out of my house after the incident. It has really affected me. Thank you :)

When a woman says she was almost molested, and Mangalorean men call it fake speaks for who Mangaloreans really are. Miss Shetty, you should lodge a police complaint or at least tweet this matter to the commisioner of police.

Mithun enough yaar. Shows sheer desperation as your stuck on this 'airport' fiasco. Does it really matter to the very small percentage of people travelling? You pay you travel! Nobody even looks at the name. Moreover 'Koti Chennaya' is Hindu name . In fact even Nalin Kumar has submitted a proposal with the same name and if its passed BJP will take the credit. Are your alligned with the BJP??? W hy cant we go for something like 'St Anthony or St Joseph Airport' .Why not ''Badriya '' airport? .
The best thing you and Cong should do is forget out this. There are commoners who are hungry, whose kids have no education ,who cannot marry of their daughters. Please join together and help them as a party. These moves will translate to votes. Not an 'airport' that caters to the rich and majority of whom dont even care for the friggin name! .Even if you succeed, the credit would go to Nalin and what you would do then? Another press conference?

They have been standing against the deals with adani and ambani from day 1. Sadly a news in India is highlight for maximum 2 days and then something new comes.
i am sure this is ur case too. Mithun Rai has been a strong pillar to conserve Tulu culture and heritage. He has always fought for preservation of tulu cultural activities. He promotes Pilinalike and Kambala and many other tulunadu activities. The hype for the culture in Mangalore remains because of him.
Being an elected MP for 10 years now i havent seen Nalin stand up for tulunadu. he has been a puppet of his Delhi bosses and is only wanting to fullfill their wishes. Being the elected leader he never raised his voice against the giving off of mangalore airport. till date he hasnt raised his voice for the people or anything that concern's general public. He is only seen lashing out at opposite leaders for whtever reason he feels. Even few weeks back he organised a full fledged BJP gathering in Mangalore inspite of the ongoing Pandemic to decide on their party matters. Looks like his boot licking has paid off by making him State party President. It is not Adani's wish to name the airport or do what he wants. the airport is built with taxpayers money and the airport belongs to the people of India so its not his property to do things as he wants. This government has made a fool of the people of India and we still dont realise it.

    SB, Mlore,

Since Mangalore International Airport is a 'Table Top / Dangerous' air port....Instead of Dhooma as suggested by you....we can name it 'Dhooma Ketu' / Comet International Airport...

So no caste and religion is involved here...also no party politics...

I hope this will not hurt anybody's sentiments...including my buddies CONgress...

Its Adani's wish. Where were these people when the Airport was sold? Its Adani's wish to name airport whatever he wants. Ideally still it should be Mangalore International Airport.
Nonsense.. Political move.. Let him name his house Koti Chennaya first..
