Udupi, Oct 29: BJP's Sumitra R Nayak and Lakshmi Mendon were unanimously elected as president and vice president of Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) on Thursday October 29.

Assistant commissioner K C Raju conducted the elections as election officer at municipal council office on Thursday, October 29.

The newly elected president and vice president will have a term of five years.

Sumithra Nayak is the senior most member in the council and has won the election three times municipal councillor. Meanwhile, Lakshmi Manjunath is a fresh face who was elected at Kola ward.

On receiving the honour, Sumithra Nayak said, "My first priority is providing basic amenities to the people and building a clean and beautiful city. I also aim to make Udupi plastic-free. If we all work together, we can achieve this goal. Let us not run behind rewards, felicitation anymore. It is already been two and a half years and its time to focus on undertaking more developmental works."

"I am thankful to BJP for giving me this opportunity. This is not a post, it is responsibility. Let us councillors work in a clean and transparent manner," she added.

Sumithra also requested all the members for their cooperation. "The first time ban on manual scavenging system was done during the term of V S Acharya. People voted for us because they believe in us. Therefore, we should work for the development of the city. We are facing unprecedented times due to the pandemic. But, we need to respond to the problems of the people and focus on solving them. Water shortage, drainage, street light are the other challenges which are to be dealt with by the CMC," she said.

Speaking on the occasion MLA Raghupathi Bhat said, "Udupi CMC is known for several developmental works like bringing Swarna river water to Udupi, placing a ban on the system of manual scavenging system and generation of non-tax income. Let us all work as a team and follow the path of our ancestors. This is the first time in history that our elected members will enjoy seven years on the post. There will be differences of opinion, but when it comes to doing the work, we should cooperate till it gets completed. The able women leaders will surely get the work done in an effective manner."

CMC commissioner Anand Kallolikar, BJP, Congress party workers were present.

Elections come and goes...MLA's-MPs-Govt. -Ministers come and goes. But Citizens need to get their pending jobs from the civil servants, MLA's MPs, Govt., ministers without any lethargy and delay. There are so many pending files at Udupi City Municipal Council office, like E-Khata Change, renewal Trade Licence, correction and issuing Birth / Death Certificates, etc. Pls, clear them all full of honesty.

We don't want responsible Civil servants simply sitting at the office and do nothing.
